One of Japan's oldest and largest wooden temples, Zenko j i i s a Na t i ona l Treasure and the heart of Nagano city. It is known th roughou t Japan a s a t emp le t ha t e ve r y one should visit at least once in their lives. It also houses the first buddhist icon brought to Japan from India, as well as a statue donated by the Royal Family of Thailand approx. 80 years ago.

Shiraito Waterfall - Karuizawa town - Komoro's Kaikoen Park is one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossoms spots, as well as the former site of Komoro Castle. The Sannomon and Otemon gates remain intact and the castle's labyrinthian stone walls still stand strong.

A fun, new, classic train has been introduced by Shinano Railway, running from Karuizawa, full of nature and culture, through Ueda, the historical city, to Nagano. Dining cars give you a chance to have richness of local grown food from the mountains Shinshu.

The steep bowl-like shape of Senjojiki Cirque was carved by glaciers some 20,000 years ago. The Komagane ropeway travels up to an altitude of 2,334 meters in under 8 minutes, where breathtaking views and highland trekking await.

The five shrines of Togakushi a r e h i d d e n i n f o r e s t s o f towering trees at the base of the Togakushi mountain range. This spiritual place has long been a haunt of ascetic monks as well as the Togakure ninja.

Tsumago-juku is one of the 69 post towns of the Nakasendo road that travels between Kyoto and Tokyo. One of the most beautifully preserved towns of its kind, walking along its main street transports you back in time to the Edo era.

Nagano Prefecture is Japan's largest producer of soybeans, the main ingredient in miso paste. Several of the makers offer tours of their facilities and provide tastings of miso soup, vegetables preserved in miso paste, and other miso products, some available for purchase.

Japanese Macaques in this area, affectionately dubbed "Snow Monkeys," bathe in the hot spring water of the Jigokudani valley. Introduced to the world by major outlets such as Life Magazine and the BBC, this is the only place in the world where you can see monkeys bathe in hot spring baths.

The Shirakawa Ice Pillars are a 50 meter high, 250 meter long wall of frozen waterfall at the base of Mt. Ontake. The ice pillars look especially beautiful in the evenings when they are illuminated.

What is NAGANO Prefecture?

Nagano prefecture is located in central Honshu and is surrounded by the three ranges of the Japanese Alps, earning it the nickname the "Roof of Japan." Nagano is also known internationally as the host of the 1998 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Blessed with 3000-meter high mountains, plentiful powder snow, and relaxing hot spring baths, Nagano prefecture is one of Japan's leading outdoor destinations.
