President’s Messagefrom Jonathan Walsh

Hello all and Happy April,This year is just cruising

by. We had a nice turn out at Steamers restaurant, in pismo Beach last month. We had Mike Stanton, plS, of MBS land Surveys and rob Carnes, pE, of Ground Up Design & Construction Manage-ment talk about the los Osos Sewer project. it was an interesting proj-

ect and a nice presentation, thank you both, again. The County of San luis Obispo had two resident En-gineers from the project there too. The members had several ques-tions that were expertly answered. rob had a very detailed photo slide show, as well as a time-lapse video of a typical day in front of a typical home. This video was a great dem-onstration of what a homeowner went through.

Our Vice president, Cristi Fry, is doing an amazing job with guest speakers and new venues. i am not sure if the members are aware how challenging it can be to find a venue in our area suitable to our

needs. So cheers to Cristi for her ef-forts! She has the ClSA president Elect, roger Hanlin, coming to talk to us this month. This will be at the Embassy Suites on April 22. The following month will be the Trig-Star awards Dinner.

Speaking of cheers for efforts, George Marchenko is heavily into TrigStar right now and i know he is very busy on that, so cheers and thank you to George. Good luck too!

Well ok, cheers to me too! i have spent the last two Saturdays at Cuesta College, talking to the Surveying Class. This is the third semester that i have done this. i seem to be able make them relax a

bit and at least have them give the land Surveying profession a seri-ous consideration for a little while. One student may want to give it a try. That is one out of fourteen students. Mostly they are Forestry or Ag Management or Civil En-gineering majors. i have invited anyone in the class to come to one our meetings. i told them to talk to some of the members, and maybe, just maybe, we can find some sum-mer work for the interested few that may show up. if anyone is interested in hiring a student this summer, let me know. i have a few students that are interested.

don’t mAke us do it!

Yes, it is desperate times. i can’t water my lawn, and i can’t get anyone to com-

ment on any articles in parallax. i am fraught with worry every month that i won’t have something to fill Parallax with. I have been lucky with such a prolific drove of officers. In addition there have been some creative members such as Mark Lewis and Robert Reese. However, i know many of you have opinions concerning the surveying world.

Sure there are people like Mike Stanton that wrote that great article on monumentation for the Califor-nia Surveyor. We are not looking for anything as sophisticated as that. let us know what you think about parallax, about a meeting, a speaker or (heaven forbid) an editorial in the paral-lax. Although we won’t guaran-tee we will print your collected works, we do want to fill space, so our bar is not that high (look at this column for one).

Think of parallax as a Blog for those that don’t know or care what a blog is. The only differ-ence is that our goal is not to have personal attacks on everyone. I know from a lifetime of experience

that land surveyors generally don’t make good salesman, which of course most surveyors would think is a good thing. You don’t have to be selling something, just discuss-ing something. Anything!

i for one have always wondered how they say they have precisions

of 1/100,000,000 when using quasar pulses for VlBi, when they have a huge 20 meter satellite dish. Sure

they get tons of channels but how do you precisely measure to the center of that beast. i haven’t want-ed to bring that up, however until my exposé on NGS and how they keep changing the numbers just to make us think we don’t know what we are doing (Stay tuned!).

So, please, when you are sit-ting back on your lounge chair sipping your mojito as you watch reruns of “Chips” grab your laptop, ipad or a men and pad of paper and write down what has been concerning you about our profession. let us know what you think. Write a few blurbs for parallax and be-fore you know it you will have an article for the California Sur-

veyor!Oh, i can’t wait until next month

to see the results!

X Send in an article to Parallax to save the life of Theo

Government surveyors came to Ole’s farm in the fall and asked if they could do some surveying. Ole agreed and Lena even served them a nice meal at noon time.

The next spring, the two surveyors stopped by and told Ole, “Because you were so kind to us, we wanted to give you this bad news in person instead of by letter.

Ole replied, “What’s the bad news? The surveyors stated, “Well, after our work we discovered your farm is not in Iowa, but is actually in South

Dakota!”Ole looked at Lena and said,” That’s the best news I have heard in a long time, why I just told Lena this

morning, I don’t think I can take another winter in Iowa.”

How do you measure the HI on that thing?
