Demon Pedals Kondo Shifuku D-Style

Congratulations on your purchase of the Kondo Shifuku D-Style - a dynamic pedal platform which interacts intensively with the player, offering you a wide range of excellent sounds: From a clean preamp and all kinds of booster tones to low gain and medium gain overdrive sounds as well as singing lead sounds.

The Story

We were asked if we would like to contribute with our expertise to the development of the ultimate D-style sound in pedal form. We sure did! D-style pedals in general are flexible tools which, in combination with a quality tube amp, allow you to approach the infamous “dumble sound”. A tricky task to achieve, as there is not just one D-Style sound, but shows many faces from lively clean sounds to hot and singing lead sounds.

The Inspiration

For this, we would like to quote Tobi Kern:

“There are these big mysteries in the history of electric guitar sounds. Dumble, Trainwreck, Single Cut guitars from the late ‘50s - many talk about these, in many cases lacking the firsthand experience... Sometimes you have to be at the right place at the right time for horizons opening up to you, bringing the unexpected.

For me it was shortly before midnight, on a Wednesday evening, after a long flight in an Izakaya in Tokyo. A bar filled with some older gentlemen, who, as it turned out during the course of the evening, can hold their liquor and have been dedicated to rock music their whole life. As like-minded guys we quickly focused on SOUND in our conversations!

Later that night, we ended up in a nearby studio, where incredible guitars and amps should enchant and fascinate me. And particular sounds would reverberate in my musical memory for many years – the ones a DUMBLE amp radiated.

Mr. Kondo came up with the idea of an equipment extravaganza: His name should be immortalized on the Kondo Shifuku D-Style as a reference to this night full of visions. “Shifuku” stands for “bliss” - which was exactly what I felt in this mysterious night, as you can only experience it in Japan. D-Style is an indication of the great sound this pedal is emulating. And with a stable, clean amp behind, I feel like I’m back in that studio, that very night.“

TIP!

Drive, Tone and Accent are three controls which strongly interact with each other. When you start discovering the possibilities of the pedal, you should e.g. slightly reduce the Drive and Tone in case you turn up the Accent.In addition, the impact of the switch positions is always in interaction with the controls mentioned above. These general interactions will become apparent quickly and represent a feature and quality of the pedal. The pedal shows the same level of interaction with the volume and tone control of the guitar. The organic and lively possibilities allow you to fine tune the pedal and its sound intuitively over a wide range of distortion and compression levels.

Controls1. Output (Mono)

Connect this output to the input of a single guitar amplifier or amp effects return.

2. DC Power Jack Connect a 9V power supply with center negative pin.

3. Input (Mono) Connect your instrument, the output of a pedal or an amps effects send jack.

4. Volume Controls the overall volume of the pedal, with its huge overhead it offers you the possibility to push the input of the subsequent amp. Turn this knob clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease the volume.

5. Accent Controls the gain structure and also the tonal response from soft and vintage to harder and more modern style.

6. Jazz/Rock Selector Switch The Jazz-position gives you softer response in higher frequencies, while the Rock-position sounds more snappy and aggressive.

7. ODS/STEEL Selector Switch ODS gives you the compression for singing lead sounds and endless sustain. The higher the gain settings, the more compression developes. STEEL also offers high degrees of gain but with a different dynamic than the ODS. The sound stays more woody and dryer.

9. B/C/D Selector Switch This switch emulates the behavior of the power amp within a D-Style amp. B as in „bold“ adds a slight compression, which lets the notes blossom after striking them. C as in „clean“ provides maximum „dry“ dynamics. D as in „driven“ simulates a cranked power amp, that adds a raw, singing compression to the sound. D-Style amps generate the compression and distortion for the most part in the pre-amp, unlike most classic amp designs. The B-C-D switch is interactive with all other controls and switches. This makes it possible to fine-tune the sound based on the power amp simulation, be it boost, rhythm or lead sounds.

10. Tone Controls the tonal balance and highs response of the pedal. Turn this knob clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease the highs.

11. Indicator LED This LED lights blue to indicate when the effect is turned on.

12. Drive Controls the distortion level of the Kondo Shifuku. From „clean“ to „mean“. Turn this knob clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease the distortion.
