The Scream

“The Scream is one of the most famous Expressionist images. Munch did several versions of it, ranging from bright, jarring oil paintings to bleak, black and white prints, like the one here.” (Dickins, 2004)

“I was out walking with two friends - the sun began to set - suddenly the sky turned blood red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city - my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety - and I sensed an endless scream passing through nature.”

Munch’s Life

Edvard Munch was born in Ekely, Norway December 1863, the son of a priest/military doctor and second child of five children. His mother and older sister died when he was a young boy. Losing his mother and sister left a profound mark on him. He, too, was sick much of his life in the winters in Norway and grew up in poverty. His father entertained the children with vivid ghost stories and tales by Edgar Allen Poe. All of these things influenced his art. (Guffey, 2009)

Does the way Munch painted remind you of another artist?

Expressionism

•Around the turn of the 20th century many artists became interested in finding ways to convey their feelings through art. Instead of painting what they could see, they wanted to paint how they felt. (Dickins, 2004)

•One theory to account for the reddish sky is that Munch had observed a powerful volcanic eruption on the island of Krakatoa. The ash that was ejected left the sky tinted red in much of the eastern United States and most of Europe and Asia. (Guffey, 2009)
