OUR MISSIONThe Reuben H. Fleet Science Center seeks to inspire lifelong learning by furthering the public understanding and enjoyment of science and technology. The Fleet Education Department seeks to develop and implement a wide array of educational and innovative programs to promote lifelong learning and a deep appreciation of science and technology for the entire community. As an informal education and inquiry-based institution, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center offers a number of activities designed to immerse your students in an interactive science experience.

Science To Go: Let Us Come to You!Have our education outreach staff deliver science programs directly to your school, library, community center or other educational venue. All Science To Go Programs can also be booked as workshops at the Science Center! Programs available for Pre-K through Grade 8.

Topics include biology, space, chemistry, physics, geology, ecology, engineering and more!

Science ShowsDiscover how fun science can be! Get students excited about science with these high-energy, educational performances. Experience a spinning vortex, dry ice, inertia and momentum, chemical reactions and hair-raising electricity.

» Shows are 45 minutes, and are appropriate for grades K–6.

» $325 for up to 150 students.

» $2 per additional student.

Science Station Investigation: Fun for All! Science Station Investigation brings a 2-hour sampling of a variety of hands-on science experiences for an exciting large-group program in your cafeteria, gym or multipurpose room. These highly engaging events are held at your educational facility during the school day and provide standards-based science investigations in a festival atmosphere on topics such as physics, magic and space.

FOR YOUR FAMILIES

Topic choices include magic, physics, space and conservation.

Magic: Parents and students work together to unlock the mysteries behind magnetism, physics, air pressure, chemistry and much, much more.

Physics: Using hands-on investigations, participants explore a variety of scientific concepts, including air pressure, gravity, buoyancy, electricity, motion, sound and light.

Space: Participants explore hands-on activities based upon stars, galaxies, constellations, the solar system, planets, moons, asteroids, comets and space travel.

Conservation: Participants explore environmental science through hands-on activities related to climate change, alternative energy, conservation, ocean ecosystems and much more.

Family Science NightLet us bring our science expertise to your school event! Family Science Night brings up to 300 children, parents and teachers together for 1.5 hours of hands-on science experiences in a fun atmosphere. These highly engaging events are held at your educational facility and provide standards-based science investigations for students and their families. Bilingual materials available.

Workshops: Hands-On Science! Include a hands-on workshop in our Learning Labs as part of your field trip to the Science Center. Our 1-hour workshops cover topics ranging from density, engineering, physics and astronomy to chemistry, biology, geology and more!

Guided ToursJoin us for a fun, interactive tour of the Fleet Science Center’s exhibit spaces. A knowledgeable team member will escort your students through the many galleries of the Fleet for deeper learning. Guided Tours include demonstrations and fun facts that will prepare students to continue exploring the exhibits with your chaperones after the tour.

» $150.00 per tour (maximum of 15 students).

Nierman Challenger Learning CenterTake the ultimate field trip in the Challenger Learning Center. The realistic Mission Control mock-up and Space Station introduce students to the teamwork, technology and drama involved in space travel. All missions meet State Standards and State Framework for grades 3–12.

3rd grade mission

Third-grade students learn about the electromagnetic spectrum and how to best protect our astronauts from the devastating effects of radiation in space.

4th grade mission

Fourth-grade students learn about the roles of electromagnets in engineering and space exploration.

Students navigate their way into lunar orbit, launch a probe and analyze a variety of data to select a landing site for the S.S. Phoenix spacecraft.

voyage to mars Grades 5+ Mars missions are available January, March, May, July, September and November.

Students continue research, calculate trajectories for entering and exiting Martian orbit, launch a probe to one of the Martian moons and learn some amazing facts about the fascinating geographic features of Mars.

Our eight interactive exhibit galleries, featuring more than 100 hands-on exhibits, are specially designed to encourage experimentation and are included in every field trip. Students love field trips to our exhibit galleries because they know they’re going to have fun! Teachers love field trips because they know students gain irreplaceable first-hand experience with core science concepts.

Genome: Unlocking Life’s CodeSeptember 27, 2014–January 4, 2015This exhibition examines both the benefits and the challenges that genomics presents to modern society through exploring what a genome is, how it relates to medicine and health and how it connects humans to all of life on the planet. Circus:Science Under the Big TopMay 23, 2015–September 7, 2015Immerse yourself in the magic and science of the circus. Learn how math, physics and anatomy make circus feats possible. More than 20 interactive exhibits show how science is at the heart of the excitement.

Cancellation PolicyA minimum of two weeks’ notice is required for rescheduling or canceling your reservation. Cancellations made with less than two weeks’ notice will result in a cancellation fee. You must send a written notification by either email ([email protected]) or by fax (619-685-5770) and must receive a written confirmation from the Client Services Department.

ChaperonesWe require one adult chaperone per 10 students for 2nd grade and up, and one adult chaperone per five students for Pre-K through 1st grade. Required adults are free. Adults beyond the required number must pay admission.

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center was the first museum in Balboa Park to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Silver Certification for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance in May of 2010. LEED certification is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance, environmentally responsible green buildings.

The ‘LEED Certification Mark’ is a registered trademark owned by the U.S. Green Building Council and is used by permission.
