The Problem: A major proportion of our
rural population is flooding into the nearby urban areas in search of work. The women are immediately placed as maids to work more than twelve hours per day. Men try their luck as daily wagers, but often remain jobless and involved in drugs or other antisocial activities. In this way they suffer unforeseen difficulties.

The Problem contd…… Their children suffer neglect
. Not only do their parents abuse them, especially girls, by sending them to work at a very young age, but the corrupt members of the privileged society also misuse and exploit them sexually. As these children grow, they become thieves, pickpockets, beggars and prostitutes.

Solution
In order to minimize this evil and attempt to eradicate it from our society, we feel it imperative to educate these neglected and underprivileged children through a contemporary and religious mode of education.

History:
The first Aabroo Welfare School started with these 5 children of two domestic maids in a room on the vacant first floor of a house in Model Town, Lahore.

Difficulties:
With the increasing number of students, it became harder and harder to continue owing to the following;

With the passing of time,
Aabroo found a lot of generous
donors, members and volunteers
who joined the organization.
Presently Aabroo has more
than 300 members and
volunteers working on various
aspects and requisites of this
cause.

Present status: Aabroo has two welfare schools running
two shifts (morning & afternoon), a
school with a single shift and two Jhuggi
schools, in different localities of Lahore.
1532 children are enrolled for free
education.
Textbooks, notebooks, pencils, rubbers,
sharpeners, uniform, school shoes, a
freshly cooked lunch, early medical
assistance and family support are provided
for free.
Around 60 gipsy women are enrolled in
the Jhuggi Literacy Project.

Aabroo Family Support Project:
Under this project, we lend
rehrees (vending carts) to the
students’ unemployed parents
who are willing to work but are
unable to find employment.

Aabroo-Izhar Medical Centre:
Aabroo-Izhar Medical Centre is established to provide free early medical assistance to the students and their families.
Hijaz Hospital & Jinnah Hospital Lahore, help in case further treatment or surgery is needed.
Local residents are also treated for Rs.10/- per patient.

Based on its performance and transparency, Aabroo has secured a Tax Exemption Certificate from the FBR (Federal Bureau of Revenue).

Funding:
All funds are raised (both in cash and kind) on a self- help basis through the donations of generous philanthropists.
Funds are also raised through the “Educate a Child” programme. Benefactors sponsor students @ Rs. 500/- per child per month on an annual, bi-annual, quarterly or even monthly basis.

Sustainability:
To minimize the dependence of Aabroo on donations from benefactors and to ensure its sustainability, the Aabroo Solid Waste Management Initiative was launched in April 2007.

Aabroo Solid Waste Management: To sustain and maintain its
educational and welfare work, Aabroo raises income by collecting the solid waste material from participating households, schools and offices and delivering the material to re-cycling plants.
In this way, Aabroo helps protect the environment, teaches the importance of recycling and ensures its own continuance through independent funding.
Future Plans:
To upgrade the present High Schools to Intermediate
Colleges.
To expand Aabroo’s initiatives to other parts of
Pakistan
To establish appropriately equipped vocational
training facilities in all Aabroo Welfare Schools/
Colleges.
