Day 1: Fly Overnight to England

Day 2: London

Arrive in LondonRanging from the North Sea in the east to the playing fields of Eton inthe west, London covers an area of some 620 square miles and ishome to over 8 million people. Prepare to observe the stunningarchitecture, vibrant street life and royal majesty of this bustlingmetropolis.

Walking Tour of London (time permitting)Stroll through the heart of London on your Tour Director-led walkingtour, which begins along the banks of the River Thames. As you walkalong the ancient embankment, note that these shadowy waters gavethe city its name, which derives from Llyn-Dyn, Celtic for “city of thelake.” Walk along the Strand and see the spot from which alldistances to London are measured. Enter Trafalgar Square, whereyou're sure to meet the world's most famous pigeons, and pause atNelson's column, a symbol of Britain's once unrivaled naval power.Continue on to Leicester Square and end your walk at chic CoventGarden, where street performers (or “buskers”) amuse the livelycrowds. (The exact walking route may vary, depending on your hotellocation and the day's other activities.)

Day 3: London

Guided Sightseeing of LondonA local guide leads you on a panoramic tour of London. Begin inGrosvenor Square; site of the U.S. embassy and the house whereEisenhower once lived, this area is sometimes called “Little America.”Continue to Hyde Park Corner, located at the southeast corner ofHyde Park, one of London's largest parks. At bustling PiccadillyCircus, the intersection of five busy streets, check out the bright lightsand big city displays, before heading to Trafalgar Square, site ofNelson's Column, built to commemorate his 1805 victory in the Battleof Trafalgar. Pass Speaker's Corner, where anyone with something tosay is invited to speak his mind. Snap a photo of the Houses ofParliament and continue along London's South Bank for views of thefamous Tower of London and London Bridge. View St. Paul'sCathedral, the magnificent 17th-century Baroque church designed bySir Christopher Wren. Finally, witness a London tradition: theChanging of the Guard. (Subject to scheduling)

Exploration Time in LondonEnjoy free time in London. You might wish to visit the original HardRock Café or Madame Tussaud's Chamber of Horrors, take a cruisedown the Thames, or browse through the countless stores alongOxford Street. Attend a Shakespearean drama at a replica of theGlobe Theatre, or visit the fascinating, hands-on exhibits of London'sNatural History Museum.

Optional Visit the Tower of LondonThe history of London comes to life at this complex of 20 towerssurrounding Tower Green. The oldest tower, known as the WhiteTower, was completed in 1097, when it was the tallest building inLondon. The Tower buildings have had many uses over the years;perhaps the most infamous was as a jail for political prisoners, not tomention two of Henry VIII's wives. The most famous exhibits at theTower are the British Crown Jewels. Aside from a short interruptionduring WWII, these splendid baubles have been locked behind theTower's walls for centuries.

Optional “Jack the Ripper” walking tourResponsible for several bloody murders in the late 1880s, Jack theRipper remains a source of great controversy. As you retrace thesteps and witness the sites of the murders, imagine a Londonwithdark, narrow, over-populated streets, shrouded in fog and rackedby poverty. Your `Ripperologist' brings this era to life, mixing suspicionand fact with an array of chilling stories and gory detail.

Day 4: London

Exploration Time in LondonEnjoy free time in London.

Optional Guided Excursion to Hampton CourtContinue your explorations of London on your own, or join us for anOptional Guided Excursion to Hampton Court. In 1514, CardinalWolsey built Hampton Court, a splendid Renaissance palace ofgrandeur unprecedented in England. In fact, it was so grand that KingHenry VIII deemed it too opulent for a cardinal and appropriated theestate for himself. As you walk amidst the booming echoes of themedieval Great Hall, listen for the voices of former residents-manypeople consider this to be Britain's most haunted house. The palace'srenowned Astronomical Clock shows the hour, day, month, phase ofthe moon, and time of high tide at London Bridge. On the grounds ofHampton Court is one of the best outdoor mazes ever designed. Tryto find your way to the middle of the hedgerow labyrinth-and outagain.

Optional Evening Theater PerformanceParticipate in London's vibrant drama scene as you attend an eveningtheater performance in the West End. London has over 80mainstream theaters-the largest array in the world-featuring everythingfrom traditional classics to cutting-edge works by new writers.

Day 5: London | Bruges

Transfer to Dover and Board a Ferry to CalaisTransfer to Dover, where you'll board a ferry to cross the EnglishChannel. Look back at the famous White Cliffs of Dover as you leavethe British shore-they are the site of the cliff scene in Shakespeare'sKing Lear. Four hundred years later, Churchill used a vast network ofsecret tunnels hidden within the rock to hide Allied troops duringWWII.

Transfer to BrugesArrive in the picture-perfect Belgian town of Bruges.

Day 6: Bruges | Amsterdam

Guided Sightseeing of BrugesEnjoy a sightseeing tour of Bruges led by a licensed local guide. Asyou walk along the canal-lined streets, trafficked by bicycles andhorse-drawn carriages, note the well-preserved medieval character ofthe town in its brick façades, steep gables, and Gothic town hall. Themarketplace was once the site of jousting matches.

Exploration Time in BrugesEnjoy time to immerse yourself in the culture and sights of Bruges.You might choose to take a bike tour or wander the medieval streetsin search of adventure.

Transfer to AmsterdamTravel through irrigated Dutch landscapes as you make your way toAmsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. Known both as a center ofentertainment and as a city of classic design and architecture,

Amsterdam is a city of astonishing contrast.

Day 7: Amsterdam

Guided Sightseeing of AmsterdamA local guide introduces you to Amsterdam's most famous sights ona walk through the city. Pass the Westerkerk (West Church), wherethe remains of Rembrandt and his son are buried. The church alsoheld the wedding of Queen Beatrix in 1966. Continue to lively DamSquare, a dam around the Amstel River created in the 13th century toprevent the Zuiderzee Sea from flooding the city. Now this bustlingtourist area boasts the impressive Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace),once the home of the Dutch Royal Family; the National Monument;and the Nieuwekerk (New Church), where members of the DutchRoyal Family are officially inaugurated. See the Begijnhof, a lovely14th-century courtyard, built as a sanctuary for the Begijnhofites, aCatholic sisterhood. Walk across the lifting bridge to Waterlooplein.Marvel at the views of the Amstel River as you cross the Magere Brug(Skinny Bridge). Although “magere” means skinny in Dutch and thebridge was quite thin when built, rumor says the bridge was actuallynamed for the Magere sisters, living on opposite sides of the river,who built the bridge to make it easier to visit each other. Finally, youwill see Rembrandtplein, a square packed with terrace cafés,diamond shops, nightclubs and hotels.

Visit the Anne Frank HouseVisit the Anne Frank House, where the young girl hid with her familyfrom 1942 to 1944-and where she penned the poignant diary that hasbeen translated into dozens of languages worldwide.

Visit the RijksmuseumVisit the Rijksmuseum which features a collection of treasures fromthe golden age of Dutch art. Major pieces include Rembrandt'sfamous painting, The Night Watch which stands at the heart of themuseum. Elsewhere, see pieces by leading lights of the last fourcenturies housed in a building, replete with intricate detail, designedby Cuypers.

Optional Visit to the Van Gogh MuseumThis museum, whose collection of over 200 Van Gogh paintings and600 drawings provides a comprehensive view of the artist's works, isone of the highlights of the city. Learn more about the artist's life, histime in England and then a mining community in Belgium as you tourthis impressive site.

Day 8: Amsterdam | Frankfurt

Transfer to Frankfurt via a Guided Sightseeing of BacharachNestled against the Rhine's left bank, Bacharach has a quaint charmall of its own. Today, you'll have the chance to explore the area with alocal guide and learn about its long history.

Arrive in FrankfurtToday, travel across Germany to Frankfurt, the country's fifth largestcity. Home to the European Central Bank, this city is a modernfinancial and business center, as evidenced by its many skyscrapers.

Day 9: Frankfurt

Excursion to Heidelberg and Rothenburg

Walking Tour of HeidelbergBecome acquainted with Germany's oldest university city (theuniversity dates back to 1386). See Heidelberg's 700-year-old Schloß(palace) and its famous Faß (wine barrel), the world's largest. Fromthe castle's rose-colored walls and historic battlements, enjoy astunning view of the Neckar Valley, where Homo heidelbergensisroamed 500,000 years ago. You'll also see the town's medievalstreets and Marktplatz, where witches were once burned at the stake.Writers as diverse as Mark Twain (who once floated down the Neckaron a raft) and Goethe (who was inspired by the view from the Schloß)have long praised Heidelberg's enduring beauty.

Walking Tour of RothenburgVisit Germany's best preserved medieval town. Stroll pasthalf-timbered homes, through twisting cobbled lanes, and along thewooden ramparts of the city's walls. You will also learn how the townhas survived earthquakes and fires - as well as a singing mayor!

Day 10: Depart for Home
