Early childhood education (ECE)/Early Education
• Early childhood education (ECE) is a branch of educational theory which relates to the teaching of young children up until the age of about eight, with a particular focus on developmental education, most notable before the start of compulsory education.

Are Computers Developmentally Appropriate?
• Most experts believe computers are not developmentally appropriate for children under the age of three (Elkind, 1998; Haugland, 1999; NAEYC, 1996).

The developmental needs of children
Concrete learners (Developmentally within Piaget’s preoperational stage)– interested in using newly learned
symbolic representation– Extremely active and mobile– they need frequent changes in
learning modalities – they want a variety of physical
experiences

What if there is no integration of technology?
• If computers are not fully integrated into the overall curriculum, they can actually negatively impact children’s creativity (Haugland, 1982).

To integrate computers effectively, these steps must occur:
• Create a support team• appropriate software• appropriate web sites• computers that can run the software
selected, and easily upgraded• adequate and periodic staff training
– use of computers – integrating the computers into the curriculum
• Integrate computer resources in the classroom.
