Principal’s Report Education Week 2019 Glen Innes West Infants School, Red Range Public School, Wytaliba Public School, Glen Innes Public School, Emmaville Central School and Glen Innes High School celebrated public education at the Town Hall from 11:00am on Thursday 8 August 2019. This year's theme was: Every Student, Every Voice. It was great to see students teachers and community members being awarded for their efforts. The performances were fantastic and all involved should be congratulated for their efforts.

Following the event, a BBQ was held alongside the Town Hall to raise money for ‘R U Aware We Care New England & Northwest Drought Appeal’. Sausage sandwiches were available for a gold coin donation. $481.90 was raised.

Special thanks must go to Mrs Gigha Goldman for all of her organisation and co-ordination.

Brisbane Exhibition (Ekka) Well done to the Glen Innes High School Agriculture Show Team at Ekka during Week 3. The students performed well in the paraders and judging competitions and our cattle placed well in their classes. Thank you to our Agriculture teachers Ms Jody Lamph and Mr Mat Lewis on a successful and enjoyable event.

Year 10 Subject Selection Interviews In Weeks 1 - 3 Ms Nicole Schafer held subject selection interviews with Year 10 students and their parents/carers. If you missed out, parents/carers can still make an appointment by contacting the school.

NW Athletics Carnival, Tamworth We had over 40 students compete at the NW Athletics Carnival at Tamworth on Friday 2 August 2019. Of those, 21 Glen Innes High School athletes have qualified for the CHS Athletics Championships in Sydney on 4, 5 & 6 September 2019. Congratulations!

Year 8 Subject Selection Information Night - Tuesday 20 August 2019 Year 9 and 10 students follow a combination of mandatory and elective subjects. At Glen Innes High School, all Year 9 & 10 students study:

English

Mathematics

Science

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

History

Geography

Students also choose to study three elective subjects from Glen Innes High School’s Subject Selection Handbook. Each elective subject has been given a nominated timeframe over which they may occur, whether that be one (1) or two (2) years. These are tentative timeframes based on the number of students that choose that

elective and are subject to changes when the timetabling process occurs. These subjects may be run vertically, that is, in combination with a Year 10 cohort.

For more information about the elective subjects, Year 8 students and their parents/carers are invited to the Year 8 Subject Selection Night from 5:30pm on Tuesday 20 August 2019 in the school’s Old Hall. Copies of the Subject Selection Handbook will be available at this session.

Book Week We will celebrate Book Week during Week 6 in Term 3. The theme is ‘Reading is my Superpower’. There will be lots of exciting activities happening in the library and the school during the week, including a Book Fair. On Friday 30 August 2019, students are encouraged to come to school dressed as one of their favourite book characters or Superhero (for a gold coin donation) and in Period 5 we will do a Glen Innes High School record-creating ‘READ IN’. See Ms Bruce in the Library for details.

Year 12 School Social All students are invited to the Year 12 School Social from 6:30pm to 9:30pm on Thursday 12 September 2019. It will be held at the school’s Gymnasium. The P&C will be putting on a sausage sizzle for students to purchase along with drinks, chocolates and lollies.

Just a reminder to students, parents and carers that students with less than 85% attendance and students on behaviour levels will not be able to attend.

Students that have been out of uniform three (3) or more times (without reasonable parent explanation) in the month leading up to the social will also not be eligible to attend. Students needing assistance with uniform need to contact the school. All inquiries are kept strictly confidential.

Parents/carers need to ensure that they are on time to pick up students at the end of the social.

CAPA 2019

Glen Innes High School held CAPA 2019 - a showcase of HSC music, drama, art and dance - at the Chapel Theatre on 30 and 31 July 2019. Congratulations to all involved for an outstanding display of creative and performing arts!

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Glen Innes High School is proud to have a group of students undertaking their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a leading structured youth development program, empowering all young Australians to explore their full potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world, regardless of their location or circumstance. To earn their Silver Award, each young person must learn a skill, improve their physical well being, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure in a new environment. All participants are supported by a network of dedicated teachers as well as community assessors and supervisors.

Duke of Edinburgh participants: Are equipped and empowered to achieve their personal best Learn to take responsibility for their goals and choices Become connected to and actively engaged within their immediate community Make a real difference to society through their positive contributions and involvement Learn to persevere and overcome barriers to success.

Glen Innes High School is proud to support these Year 10 students through this challenging journey of self-discovery.

To serve the community, the students volunteer to run the movies at the Chapel Theatre each month. Thank you to all the volunteers at the Chapel Theatre who give up their time to provide the movie service to the community and who have gone out of their way to train our students. The students look forward to serving you at the movies!

Girls League Tag Gala Day

Congratulations to both our 14s and Opens Girls League Tag teams who are both through to the North West Finals Gala Day in Bingara after a successful day in Inverell on Tuesday 13 August 2019. The Opens team came away winners for the day winning two tries to nil against Inverell High School in the final. The 14s team played a round robin with a draw against Holy Trinity School in their first game and didn’t concede another point in their following three games against other Inverell teams. Everyone in the teams contributed well and were the standout teams for the day. Well done and good luck in Bingara!

Girls League Tag Gala Day

From 2 to 4 August 2019 Glen Innes High School PDHPE teacher Mr Jeremy Budda-Deen travelled to the Sydney Academy of Sport to coach the Under 15s CHS (NSW Combined High Schools) Touch Football Team to play against CCC (Combined Catholic Colleges) and CIS (Combined Independent Schools) for the state title. After convincing wins of 9-2 and 7-0 in the round games against CIS and two draws against CCC the final was going to be close! After an intense final and CHS trailing 2-4, with three minutes left CHS were able to level the scores and force a drop off and win the match and the state title.!! Congratulations Mr Budda-Deen.

NW Opens Netball Regional Final

Glen Innes High School played against Oxley High School at the North West Opens Netball Regional Final at the Tamworth Sports Dome on Monday 12 August 2019. It was a closely contested game with Oxley High School taking the lead 33-32 in the final seconds! Emily Burton and Elizabeth Chard led the team of 12 to near victory. Well done to all our players!

Good luck to Oxley High School at the CHS Open Netball Knockout Finals in Illawarra later this month.

Year 11 English

As part of their Module A: Contemporary Possibilities unit, Year 11 students transformed into super-sleuths during their English lesson this morning. Channelling their inner Sherlock Holmes, students used their powers of deduction to determine who the "murderer" was - with surprising results! Such a fun lesson by Miss Bishop.

10 English Gold

10 English Gold demonstrated their creative streak in class today with their Lego-inspired scene from "The Story of Tom Brennan", the text they are studying in class.

7 English Gold

7 English Gold were tasked with writing similes in English class today and were each given a squishy ball as a prompt. They produced some amazing similes and had fun in the process.

Tamworth Art Express Excursion

On Friday 2 August 2019, senior Visual Art students visited Art Express (best of HSC 2018) and had a practical workshopping day at the Tamworth Regional Art Gallery.

Ekka 2019

A large group of students attended the Brisbane Exhibition (Ekka) as part of the Glen Innes High School Agriculture Show Team from Sunday 4 August to Thursday 8 August 2019 accompanied by Ms Jody Lamph and Mr Mathew Lewis.

Congratulations to Isabelle Wright who placed 7th in the intermediate paraders (14-15 years) and Hannah Dunn who made the final of the intermediate paraders. Over 100 students were in this very strong field. Congratulations also to Jessica Wright who placed 6th in the intermediate junior judging completion in a field of 120+ competitors. GIHS also had a team in the inter school team judging competition comprising of Owen Walmsley, Morgan-May Hay and Hannah Dunn.

Ekka 2019

Milky Way (Speckle Park x Angus steer purchased from the Winter Family placed 7th in a very strong class of 27 steers. Chilli (L...imousin x Hereford heifer purchased at the Potential Show Steer Sale was also shown.

Open steer judging: Bling (Charolais x steer purchased from the McIndoe family) was paraded in a strong class of 30+ and Shades (a Murray Grey steer... bred by Carlinga Murray Grey stud and purchased at the potential show steer sale) was shown in the largest class of the day with 46 entries. Neither steer was successful however the standard this year was exceptional and the steers looked great in their classes. Shades was also selected to represent the Murray Grey breed in the Ken McDonald Shield.

NW Girls Tennis Trials

Congratulations to Chelsey Kemp, Year 9 on her selection into the North West Tennis Team. Chelsey competed at the NW Tennis Trials on Monday 12 August 2019 at Treloar Tennis Park in Tamworth. There she came fifth (seeded 6th), making it onto the regional team Chelsey will go on to represent North West at the CHS Tennis Carnival at Inverell 17 - 19 September 2019. Good luck Chelsey!
