    The most common notion aboutteaching is that it is aninherently simple job with

    few challenges.This perception iseven more incredulous as it is oftenheld by educated individuals. Infact,a lot of people end up joiningthis profession as a result of thisvery notion rather than a driving

    passion to teach or for the sheerlove of the subject.Little do theyknow that the job of a teacher isfraught with challenges.

    LOW SALARIES

    While it is true that the amount oftime spent by a teacher in the workplace (read school/ college) isrelatively less than that spent bymost other professionals, the

    amount of work a teacher takeshome is substantially more. Thereare lesson plans to draw up,worksheets to prepare,presentations to make, homeworkto assess, assignments to grade,question papers to set and answerpapers to correct. Further, theremuneration too is not high

    enough to attract talentedindividuals who are fit for theprofession. Starting salaries tendto be amounts that pale incomparison with that of otherprofessionals. Salary increments inrelation to experience are indeedvery low. Several educationalinstitutes do not consider theexperience and qualifications of anindividual while deciding on their

    salaries.Very few teachers areable to earn as much as otherskilled professionals withcomparable experience.Additionally, the scope for growthin educational institutes is ratherless when compared to that in thecorporate world.

    JUGGLING

    MULTIPLE TASKS

    As ones teaching careerprogresses,logisticaladministrative taskstoo become moreprominent.Organising tests andassessing themuniformly whilemaking room for achilds creativity andexpression are alsomajor administrativechallenges.

    Skillfully tacklingthe abysmally lowattention spans yetexceptionally strongperceptive skills ofstudents too is adifficult job. One hasto maintain onestemper andsensibilities whilehandling thebehaviours, attitude and disciplineof a varied number of students thatcome from diverse backgrounds.Each student needs to be dealt within a unique manner and his/ hercorresponding disparate

    shortcomings must be overcome ina unique way. Health andbehavioural problems in childrentoo need to be adequately handledto maintain a safe and nurturingenvironment.Inculcating a sense of curiosityand analytical thinking in childrenis no small feat; it requires acreative yet painstaking approachto the process of teaching. In manycases, a lack of basic facilities is asevere shortcoming as well. Often,a teachers plan to teach lessons in

    an elaborative and innovativemanner fails due to the lack ofinfrastructure.

    THE COACHING CLASSMENACE

    The near religious way in whichchildren are herded to coachingclasses and tuitions has resulted instudents being in a discordant stateof mind at school. Instead ofsupplementing school lessons orserving as a remedial measure in

    case of the lack of adequateinstructions at school, theseclasses often serve to pre-empt the natural flow ofstudies. The popularity ofcoaching classes also bringsinto focus the need forteachers to continuouslyreinvent themselves andbring about novel ways ofteaching.Lastly, the aversion tochange such asencouraging the use ofinternet severely dampsthe ability to explore

    exciting new possibilities.This shortcoming alsolimits the abilities ofteachers to progress andinnovate as does the

    unwavering focus on rote learningthat is the biggest casualty of theprevalent assessment system.

    Right from bureaucratic corridors toprivate colleges,education is amuch discussed topic. However, in

    spite of such discussions and even thesuggestions of various committees likethe Kothari Commission and theKnowledge Commission, little seems tohave changed.Add to it the disparity inthe quality of education imparted byinstitutes across the country. Private andpublic, state and central, Indian andinternational, missionary and non-missionary, minority and majority,English and vernacular medium, andSSC,ICSE, CBSE, NCERT, IGCSE, and IBare just some of the differences that

    require corrective measures.This is not to say that positive changes

    have not taken place. Unemployed,educated youth has given birth to theintroduction of professional courses suchas BMM and BMS which have becomehugely popular among students. Add-onprogrammes, honours degrees, and thechoice of vocational subjects andlanguages, are some of the recentdevelopments that have changed the faceof education.Additionally, the semestersystem and continuous assessments havetaken away the pressure of finalexamination to some extent.Assessmenton the basis of project work and viva-voce too is a positive step towards aidingthe development of students.The more

    recent introduction of online admissionstoo is doubtlessly a parent and student-

    friendly step.However, in spite of thesechanges, there are some principal areasthat we need to focus on.

    The English poet,T S Eliot oncequestioned, Where is the knowledge wehave lost in information? Where is thewisdom we have lost in knowledge? It isperhaps time we seek answers to theseomnipresent questions.

    Donning an optimistic outlook, letsrejoice the fact that our children haveinstant access to abundant informationthanks to the internet, encyclopedias andthe different school boards that arefiercely competing with each other tobombard them with maximum

    information.
