For example: “I liked the way you picked up the toys and put them in the basket” rather than “You are a good boy.” Be affectionate: Your child will feel recognized, rewarded and appreciated when you give him/ her a hug, pat on the back, or a kiss. Repeat the message in a different way: It helps them keep the message fresh, new and clear. I also especially liked a home visit that I went to with Joanna, a staff member from Parenting Now!. In this home, the mother is 18 years old and in school, and lives with her partner and her two- year-old son. Joanna introduced activities for the little boy, in particular for eye and hand coordination. A few laminated, coloured fishes on a wooden stick descended from a thread, which had a magnetic tip. The boy had to reach out to the magnet to pick it up. Joanna involved the mother and me too, and the four of us enjoyed this activity. Since the mother is in school until afternoon, Joanna gave her some simple reading material on discipline. When Joanna observed that the mother was correcting her child, she communicated to her that she has to be firm when she is correcting him and not say sorry and confuse the child. Here was a very practical example of how to work with families during a home visit. After attending this training, I realized that we could modify the Parenting Now! curriculum for the many different groups we serve – not just prospective parents, but parents with biological children, teachers at school, foster mothers and parents of children in our educational sponsorship program. In the mentoring sessions, as I spoke to my trainers, I became really interested in working with school teachers especially. Reinforcing the Need for Foster CareOur outreach campaign for foster care continuesto gain momentum. At many programmes, VCTdrove home the message that however good aninstitution is, the nurturing of a child with careand love in a family environment is undoubtedlythe best alternative for a homeless child. This

would be on a temporary basis till his or her parentcan resume this responsibility or until a permanenthome is found.

‘Institutional care, the last resort for children’ washosted by UNICEF, Task Force and the

Parent Preparation WorkshopContrary to what many say and believe Parentingdoes not come naturally. They are learnt. Thebreakdown of both marriage and family hasresulted in children being neglected and sometimesabused. Teaching skills of parenting will go a longway in improving quality of life for the family asa whole. Institutions for children, women, rehabcenters etc. which does cost the state huge sumsof money can be looked at as things of the past.

Vathsalya regularly leads sessions on parentingfor parents who are preparing to adopt a child. These parents always appreciate this subject, as itgives them a lot of insight and helps them developrealistic expectations of their child. This trainingmodule is now being used not only for prospectiveadoptive parents but also for our foster parentcommunity. We are also looking at the possibilityof translating it into the local languages and takingit to our villages. Vathsalya has incorporated someof the exercises such as the Parenting Now!’ssuitcase activity. In this activity, the parents aresupposed to fill a suitcase with all the intangiblethings that they would want for their child, suchas love, care, good self-esteem, education andcompassion, etc. Couples love this.

Three sessions of the Parent PreparationWorkshop were held this year in March, AprilJune and July. Around six couples attended eachworkshop. The topics for presentations weremarriage enrichment, core issues of adoption, child development and the adoption process. Theparents enjoyed the role play and other gamesorganized for them. The programmes ended withgroup discussions, where the parents interactedwith each other, shared their anxieties and clearedtheir doubts.

our staff spoke about the importance and the needfor education. The topics covered were discipliningthe child, how to interact with the child and alsoon educating the child. We encouraged the parentsto motivate their children and identify the aptitudesand interests they have. It was emphasized thatattachment and bonding takes place when theycommunicate with their children. Parents were alsoadvised on how to handle children, help them withrelationships, building friendships. The responsefrom the parents was very encouraging.

Our staff visited Col. Hill School as part of our

Education Sponsorship programme. They spoketo the parents about the importance of education, disciplining the child, spending quality time withthe children, helping them with their homework, encouraging and appreciating the child with asmall gift, kiss or a hug. They also made theparents understand the attachment and bondingthat takes place when they communicate with theirchildren.

Department of Women & Child, at Bhuvaneshwar,Orissa. Our learning’s and the experience of fostercare at VCT was a blessing to the 300 participantsat the plenary session of the conference.

A Foster Mothers’ Meet, organized on March 6,Women’s Day, was attended by representativesfrom BOSCO (Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota),Sathi and Everychild. They interacted with thefoster mothers and VCT staff who make regularfoster care visits. They spoke to the foster mothersabout the importance of being a woman, theresponsibilities towards the children who areplaced in their care.

BOSCO has taken a leaf from VCT’s example. The NGO has started foster care programmes, andis training NGOs for this. BOSCO works withstreet children as well as with children in conflictwith law, and many of them are abandoned or haverun away from home. In continuation of a one-day workshop on foster care, BOSCO staff visitedVCT to learn more about the programme. Theyalso visited foster families and were given a copy

of the Foster Care document. VCT also conductedan orientation on foster care and itsimplementation to about 20 of their field andoffice staff; two of our foster mothers also sharedtheir experiences.

At a theological college, our staff made apresentation on foster care and institutional care.Everychild and Saathi, two NGOs that work witholder children, interacted with VCT staff to learnmore about our Foster Care Programme.Everychild organized a day’s workshop, whichwas attended by NGOs from districts ofKarnataka. The focus was on Foster Care as agood option for children without parental care.

UNICEF staff from all over India, along withthe staff of the State department, visited Vathsalyain June 2012. There was a discussion andpresentation on “Alternate Care and FamilyStrengthening Programme”. New CARA GuidelinesCARA brought out its new guidelines in June2011. This was officially published on the June27, 2011. In August, CARA had a meet for allRIPAs, AFAAs, Government agencies and ACAs,to make them aware of the new gazettedguidelines.

The teething stage has been uncomfortable. RIPAs(recognized inter country adoption agencies) arenow required to work with agencies recommendedby CARA. The challenge is that all agencies andcouples are looking for healthy babies, whileRIPAs have been working with agencies andcouples who are ready to take children with specialneeds/older children.

Starting October 1, 2011, CARA started receivingregistrations online. Copies of home studies werealso sent directly to CARA who in turn sent themto RIPAs. All adoptions both domestic andinternational are now processed through the

Juvenile Justice Act, which is a very gooddevelopment. The advantage here is that parentsdo not need to file for adoption in their respectivecountries.

The Adoption Recommendation Committee andState Adoption Resource Agency has been set upand CARA NOC’s are processed through them.

The last AGM of ACA Karnataka was held inMarch this year, following a change in itsfunctions and responsibilities. Most members feltthat the ACA should continue as a coordinatingagency since Karnataka does not have a body thatbrings all adoptions together.

The DWCD Karnataka has set up statutorybodies SARA (State Adoption Resource Agency)and the ARC (Adoption RecommendationCommittee) through whom the dossiers areprocessed to CARA for children’s NOC’s.

Reaching OutIn December 2011 our children went to St. John’sMedical College to take part in the Christmasprogramme organized for dialysis patients. Ourchildren entertained them with singing, recitingmemory verses and a skit. The programme endedwith a tea party and gifts for our children.

She also shared herexperiences of fostering children which was veryencouraging to all of us.

Celebrating the Joys of ChristmasVathsalya celebrated Christmas on December 22,2011. The programme started with a prayer byMs. Diana Tholoor, a volunteer at Vathsalya. Thiswas followed by a skit and series of songs fromour children. They sang beautifully, performedchoreography and recited memory verses whichwere much appreciated by one and all. We alsohad a dance performance by Richard Tholoor, whohad us sitting on the edge of our seats. Rachel andher brother Jonathan, friends of Vathsalya led usin a few carols. One of our interns was overjoyed

made. So much so that we would try the recipes,at home, but they were not like Mary’s. Therewas that special Mary’s flavour in everything shecreated – be it the salads, the simple fried potatoes, the biryani, the chutneys, the vadas or the pickles.More importantly, she always remembered thelikes of everyone, especially our internationalvisitors.

We have received several messages from familiesthe world over, families whose lives she hastouched. One adoptive mother wrote: “I wastouched by her sweet love and care for thechildren. So many children will rise up and callher blessed.” “We shall always remain indebted

to you for your service.” “She has been an angel, and touched our lives in many ways.” “Bless you, mummy” was a simple, but heartfelt sentimentof one child.

We at VCT – the children, mothers, childcareworkers, foster mothers, adoptive families andstaff — miss our Mary Phillips — our warden, our mummy, our sister, our Mary-ma.

Give her the reward she has earned, and let herworks bring her praise at the city gate. Proverbs31:31. Let Mary Phillips bright her bright examplebe held forth at VCT and in the hearts and homesof all whom she met and interacted with.

Tribute to Mary PhillipsOur warden, our mummy, our sister, our Mary-ma

Mary Phillips, who waswith Vathsalya for 17years, passed on to herheavenly abode on July31, 2012

A Jewish proverb saysGod could not beeverywhere and thereforeHe made mothers. Hemade special mothers likeMary Phillips, to take careof His family of childrenwho need special nurturing, special care andspecial love. Mary Phillips had the designation ofWarden at Vathsalya Charitable Trust, but to themany children she was simply “mummy” –mummy, not just to these children who looked toher for a hug, a smile, and even correction, but tothe entire family of Vathsalya Charitable Trust –the adoptive families, child care workers, the staff, foster mothers and friends of VCT.

Mary Phillips joined VCT in 1995 and createdhappiness at our agency in many ways – big orsmall. Naturally, being the warden, she had to rulewith an iron hand – but the hand of “this incrediblewoman” was filled with that special tenderness, devotion and friendship to the children or adultswho interacted with her.

Mary Phillips was a resourceful person. We neverheard her say “This is impossible” or “I cannotdo it”. During any emergency – rushing pregnantmothers or sick children to the hospital after officehours or at midnight — Mary would not shy awayfrom any responsibility that she was entrustedwith. She was always dependable. You just had tosay, “Mary, this needs to be taken care of” and itwas done.

Everything at VCT was done with clock-workprecision. Be it assigning duties, buying ofprovisions, making sure that everyone wascomfortable, appointments with the doctors forthe children and the mothers, — the list is endless. Her love for cooking reflected in the dishes she

Holt International Children’s ServicesOur Social Worker, Sylvia, shares about her time atParenting Now! and how she plans to apply the practicesshe learned. We bring you excerpts from the article thatwas published on the blog of Holt InternationalChildren’s blog

The Birth to Three/Parenting Now! experiencewas truly different for me because this was thefirst time I was in training for parenting groups.Very basic things like how you welcome a group, use the right words and thank parents for makingit to the group made so much sense. Just byrecognizing their presence, you actually makethem feel they are welcome and important in thegroup.

It was an eye-opener to learn better ways tomanage children’s behaviour. When they havetheir meltdowns, instead of losing our temper, wecan use alternative techniques such as giving thempositive attention. We all like to be appreciated;acknowledging positive behaviour, in turn, encourages positive behaviour. We can providepositive attention by giving children special timeand showing approval. Special time is time thatyou set aside each day to spend alone with yourchild. The time should be regular enough for thechild to count on it, and centred on the child’sneeds or wants.

The purpose of showing approval is to encourageyour child to continue a particular behaviour. Alsoat times, we can divert their attention to other

things and sometimes even ignore the behaviourso as not to reinforce it with attention – be itpositive or negative.

I particularly liked the discussion on discipline.Discipline is most likely the most challenging taskof parenting. Sometimes people misunderstandhow to enforce discipline and end up usingmethods that are harmful to the child. People donot realize that punishments only hurt children.Screaming, yelling, spanking will bring down thechild’s self-confidence and humiliate the child. That can never be positive parenting. I think wehave to encourage positive behaviour, and to dothat, we have to start noticing it.

The range of behaviours children present isunlimited. It is the task of a parent to sift throughall the possibilities and develop a strategy that willwork for the family. If we have a toolbox ofdiscipline techniques, we can handle much of ourchildren’s difficult behaviours.

The central goal of discipline is to help our childrenlearn to discipline themselves. Through trainingat Birth To Three/Parenting Now!, I learnedseveral prevention tools that parents can use, suchas communicating clear expectations. Childrenneed to know what behaviours the parents expectand should be told in very simple language thatthe child understands. Tell them why the behaviouris important. Reducing boredom is also effective. Some children get into trouble when they are
