Lahal

PRE-K students learning to count using Links.

Lahal is a spirited traditional Kwakwaka’wakw and First Nations game meant to bring people together, and to lift hearts and spirits. 11 to 13 sticks and four bones or antlers are painted different colours. Two teams of one to many players try to win sticks by guessing where the bones are in the opposing team’s hands. Drumming and singing with your team helps distract the opposing team. The game lasts for as long as it takes for one team to get all the sticks—from a few hours to several days.

The tradition of Lahal was almost lost during the historic suppression of cultural ways after early European contact. Lahal play has since been revitalized and is played at celebrations, gatherings and other community events. It is taught and played at K’ak’ot’lats’i school as well as among the youth and adults in the Quatsino community.

Port Alice, BC 2010-2011

Sea View School is a K-9 school in Port Alice, BC. Approximately forty-five students are currently enrolled and receive a high level of student-teacher time in each of our three classrooms. This year, students are participating in the “Learning in Depth” program for one to two hours each week. During “LiD” each student explores an individual topic for the entire school year. LiD is self-directed learning, which means students decide how and what they want to learn about their topic. Many engage in reading, research, writing, making models, illustration, and experiments to increase their knowledge. Marks are not assigned to the students’ work. This experimental program is based on the way children and adults learn outside of school. Observations and input from Sea View students and their teacher about the quality and depth of learn-ing during the program will provide important feedback to Simon Fraser University concerning the learning model.

This year, our Jr. Secondary activities will included Kayaking, skiing at Mt. Cain, a possible caving trip, curling, weight training with a certified personal trainer, skating, and gumboot dancing. The Intermediate classroom is raising salmon, educating the community about sea lions, and preparing for a year-end field trip to Victoria. The Primary classroom recently cele-brated Chinese New Year with the owners of the Quatsino Chalet. They have also been treated to other local field trips, in-cluding behind-the-scenes tours at FP Foods, the Port Alice Fire Hall, Port Alice Ambulance Station, the Post Office and the Public Library. At Sea View School we value the experience and company of our local Senior Citizens. Special activities with seniors are a regular occurrence, and retirees also provide lessons in watercolour painting, knitting, and curling. Thank you, Port Alice, for the many ways in which you support our school!

Please remember that Sea View School is a Scent-Free School. This page was created by the Grade 7-9 Students at Sea View School..

DrummingIn January, my class and Mr.Ogren’s class went to the library to learn about FirstNation peoples’ language. We learned words like drum-stick which is tamya’ya, drumwhich is da’xwi and other basic words like jump, turn and stop. There is a story to each elderly drum. We also learned about the people and how fast you should and shouldn’t beatthe drum. It was very fun and I learned a lot.

Eke Me-XiThe Eke Me-Xi Program is an off campus, alternative learning environment for Port Hardy Secondary students located on Tsulquate reserve. Robert Walkus Sr. translated the name and it means Good Dream, but we also refer to our program as Dream Big! Eke Me-Xi has been in operation for thirteen years and is a tri-band (Kwakuitl Band, Gwa’sala’Nakwaxda’xw Nation, and Quatsino First Nation) initiative with School District No. 85. Approximately 20 students attend from all three local bands that live on and off reserve. Our program provides a flexible timetable with self-paced courses. Students attending Eke Me-Xi have access to Port Hardy Secondary facilities and services (ex. counselling, sports teams, workshops). Eke Me-Xi offers English, Math, Science, Social Studies, life skills, and cultural teachings for grades 8 to 10.

Showcased in the pictures below are a few of our class trips to Blunden Harbour and Cluxewe. Also, some pictures of our open houses that our students host for their families.

“Bringing Learning to Life”

Engaging the Community and Improving the Achievement of ALL Learners

MISSION STATEMENT: We all share responsibility for creating a supportive environment in which students learn the skills, acquire the knowledge and develop the attitudes to successfully meet the challenges of a changing world.

April is Earth MonthIn School District 85

April is Earth Month in School District 85. After a successful In-Service Day on January 17, 2011 at North Island Secondary School entitled “Empower Ed: Connecting our Students with the Environment”, the Environmental Education Steering Committee is once again challenging schools to take on projects that will empower children to make a difference and connect them with the environment. We predict that students and staff will rise to the challenge, and work with community mentors during April on environmental projects which will be showcased at the Youth Forum, “Get Back Out!” in early May.
