The Faculty of Education Sciences and the Unit for Open Distance Learning at the NWU offer an undergraduate degree in Education where students determine the location, time and pace of learning.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Method of DeliveryStudents, who cannot enrol at one of the NWU campuses for a contact programme, may enrol for the BEd programme through Open Distance Learning. The BEd programme is offered by means of two modes of delivery, namely: Contact (full time, on-campus for the Foundation -, Intermediate – and Senior/FET Phases) or as an Open Distance Learning programme (Foundation and Senior/FET Phases) with scheduled whiteboard contact sessions at selected study centres and the use of the NWU’s eFundi Learning Management platform. Examinations for students on the open distance learning mode are written at NWU examination centres nationwide.

Open Distance Learning Study CentresStudents, who are not enrolled as contact students at one of the NWU campuses, can sign up for the BEd programme at selected Open Distance Learning Centres of the NWU which are situated in all nine provinces and Namibia. Facilitation and student support are provided by NWU-appointed staff at the Open Distance Learning study centres.

All examinations are conducted at exam centres, with NWU staff setting the examination papers and assessing answer scripts, thus ensuring that all students have met the required module and programme outcomes.

Language MediumOpen Distance Learning studies are only

available in English as a medium of instruction.

Duration of studyThe minimum duration of study for this degree is four

years and the maximum duration is six years for contact students and eight years for Open Distance Learning.

CostsEstimated costs for the BEd programme for Contact students are R30 000.00 and for Open Distance Learning are R20 500.00 per annum. For Open Distance Learning students the study fees includes study material. E-mail [email protected] for a quote on one of our BEd programmes.

Study Centres for Open Distance LearningAlthough study centres are dynamic and more centres can be listed, the following study centres were functional at the time of going to print. Study centres as indicated in this booklet may vary from year to year according to the number of enrolled students.

Note: Not all listed centres will be functional to present the BEd. Only those centres with sufficient student enrolments will be selected. Call the Call Centre (018 285 5900) to enquire about which study centres are selected for the BEd programme.

General Admission Requirements• A National Senior Certificate must be obtained and the

minimum statutory requirements for admission to a B degree.

• A minimum APS Score of 24: The results obtained in four designated subjects and two NSC subjects are used in the computation of the APS score. Life Orientation is excluded.

• Students with an APS score higher than 24, who do not have a degree endorsement (exemption), may be considered for admittance after completing a successful Senate-approved admission test.

• Strict selection applies for the BEd-degree: applications may be submitted from

1 March until 30 June for contact students and until 31 August for ODL (distance) students (see

application process below).• Please note that, owing to capacity and costing aspects, the University reserves the right to select candidates for admission. This means that prospective students who comply with the minimum requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the BEd programme.

Specific Admission Requirements• Basic computer literacy• Language requirement: The Home Language at gr 12, pass level 4 (50-59%) is compulsory as

Home Language in the Foundation and

Intermediate Phases (4 years) and as selected main subject in the Senior and FET Phase.

• Personal access to Internet (preferably). Wifi available at the campuses and study centres.

• It is compulsory for Contact students to attend classes from Monday to Friday and for Open Distance Learning students to attend all scheduled contact sessions at a study centre one afternoon per week from 14h00-18h00.

• It is the students’ responsibility and it is compulsory for the student to obtain the necessary technology such as a computer and/or tablet and mobile phone that meet the minimum specifications of the NWU namely: WiFi-enabled, one of the operating systems Windows, Android or Apple, 3G enabled (preferable) and 32 Gig (preferable).

• Compulsory Work Integrated Learning (WIL). All students (first to fourth year) must do six weeks (three weeks in each semester) of Work Integrated Learning per year at an approved school. (Third year students must do 2 additional weeks of observation at a school of their choice relevant to their applied phase at the beginning of their third year.)

Students who want to apply for one of the BEd programmes via Open Distance Learning should call the NWU Call Centre for Open Distance Learning at 018 285 5900 to obtain an application form. The application form is also available for online registration at the link to the Unit of Open Distance Learning at the NWU web address: https://distance.nwu.ac.za/content/unit-open-distance-learning-educationa. Complete the application form in full. Note: Un-/incomplete application forms will not be considered.

Attach all the documentation that must accompany the application form (as stipulated on page 1 of the application form). Take note that only certified copies are accepted.

The application form will be processed within a reasonable time after which the NWU will notify the applicant if, where and when a selection test has to be written. The results of the selection test will be considered by the NWU staff after which the student will be informed during October prior to the year of enrolment whether the application was successful.

Contact and Open Distance Learning Programme BEd Curriculum: Foundation PhaseProgramme/Qualification Code: (Contact): 4BHJ01Programme/Qualification Code: (Open Distance Learning): 4BJJ01

• Students must develop the ability to demonstrate communicative, numerical and technological skills in such ways as to facilitate own academic learning.

• Within the different specialist fields in the curriculum, the focus is on language, mathematics and life skills.

• Students receive specialist training within the specific learning phase to promote learning progression and holistic development. The mastering of teaching and learning strategies, assessment practices and professional conduct are, amongst other aspects, addressed in this programme.

• The curriculum exists of generic and specialist modules.• The curriculum is offered over four years with specific credits

which must be obtained yearly.• The qualification aims to train prospective educators who

want to teach from Gr. R to Gr. 3.• Work Integrated Learning forms part of the

professional development of the student.

EDUCATION SCIENCESFaculty of

BEd Intermediate Phase(Only for Contact students: full time, on-campus)Programme / Qualification Code: (Contact): 4BQJ01

• The BEd Intermediate phase students are expected to master certain outcomes successfully over the four years of study.

• Students will be specialising in the following learning areas: in Home Language teaching and in First Additional English Language teaching as well as in Mathematics, Science and Technology or Life Skills and Social Sciences.

• The mastering of teaching and learning strategies, assessment practices and professional conduct are, amongst other aspects, addressed in this programme.

• The curricula are compiled from certain modules and offered over four years. The curricula exist of generic modules and specialised modules. Work Integrated Learning forms part of the professional development of the student within each phase.

BEd Senior and Further Education and Training PhaseProgramme / Qualification Code: (Contact): 4BNJ01Program / Qualification Code: (Distance Learning): 4BMJ01

• BEd Senior and Further Education and Training students are expected to successfully master certain outcomes over the four years of study.

• The integration of knowledge and skills can be obtained within the following specialist fields within the various available curricula: Education Afrikaans, Education English, Education Life Sciences, Education Information

Technology, Education Economics, Education History, Education Geography, Education Life Orientation, Education Art, Education Movement Sciences, Education Physical Sciences, Education Management Studies, Education Accounting, Education Applied Computer Technology, Education Mathematics, Education Setswana - mother tongue/ non mother tongue, Education Engineer Graphics and Design.

• The mastering of teaching and learning strategies, assessment practices and professional conduct are, amongst other aspects, addressed in this programme.

• The curricula are compiled from certain modules and offered over four years. The curricula exist of generic modules and main subjects. Work Integrated Learning forms part of the professional development of the student within each phase.

BEd Senior and Further Education and Training Phase - TechnologyOnly for Contact students: full time, on-campusProgramme / Qualification Code: (Contact): 4BNJ01

• The specialist BEd (Technology) programme is one of the

most popular training opportunities with specific training in: Engineering Graphics and Design plus a choice among: - Electronic Technology - Mechanical Technology - Civil Technology

• Skills and development with regards to design and graphic communication (Engineering Graphics and Design)

• Skills and application of Electronic and Electric principles (Electric Technology)

• The skills and knowledge in terms of the Civil Technology (Building and Construction and Woodwork

• Conceptual design in the production and maintenance industries in Mechanical and Engineering environment (Mechanical Technology)

• The mastering of teaching and learning strategies, assessment practices and professional conduct are, amongst other aspects, addressed in this programme.

• The programme is offered over a four year period. The curricula consist of generic modules and main subjects.
