CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (CCAs)KEY DATES & TIMESTHERE ARE TWO PHASES FOR CCA SIGN-UPS.

Phase OneActivities Portal will open at 12 Noon Thursday 20 February 2020. The Portal will close at 10am on Tuesday 25 February and activities will be allocated.

Phase TwoThe Portal will then reopen at 4pm on Tuesday 25 February, where additional choices can be made. Phase Two will close at 10am on Thursday 27 February. This is when all remaining CCA places will be allocated.

SEASON THREE RUNS FROM 9 MARCH 2020 TO 15 MAY 2020 (8 WEEKS).

KEY NEW INFORMATIONCOVID - 19 IMPACT ON SEASON 3

In light of recent COVID-19 Guidelines please note that we will be not be running any off-site CCAs this season

This season is also starting a week later than previously advertised to allow us time to adjust to any impact the guidelines have had on our Season 3 planning

Parents of learners from Kindergarten to Year 1 may choose to avoid CCAs that are offered by an external provider to limit your child’s exposure to external visitors.

If the COVID-19 Guidelines change during the season resulting in us cancelling a paid CCA, we will do our absolute best to recover the cost from our providers. However this is not guaranteed and the school will not be held liable to repay the cost of the CCA.

CCA Gathering pointAll learners will gather in the Level 5 West Wing Cafeteria after school and will be taken to their CCA classrooms by their teachers. The teachers can make alternate arrangements with the learners for the weeks after.

Pick up pointAfter CCAs in the afternoon, learners can be picked up from the Level 2 Eco Cafe, outside the Learner Services office.

Younger learners who are taking the CCA bus will be taken to the bus bay by the CCA teacher.

4 NEXUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (SINGAPORE)

Please select CCAs that your child will commit to for the whole season.

The system randomly allocates places and there is no advantage to selecting early in this process.

Due to the length of the school day CCAs are not available for Nursery learners.

Kindergarten learners will be allocated up to 2 CCAs (1 CCA, 1 paid CCA).

Year 1 learners will be allocated up to 3 CCAs (2 CCA, 1 paid CCA).

All learners from Year 2 upwards will be assigned up to a maximum of 5 CCAs, (3 CCAs, 2 paid CCAs) depending on the popularity of the CCAs. Learners from Year 5 upwards should make their own choices with parental guidance. Parents will not be able to do this through their own portal login. For information on ACSIS Sports, click here.

PARTICIPATION IN CCA SESSIONS & EVENTSPlease take time to read over the various activities on offer and discuss with your child which CCAs they would like to commit to. We strongly encourage every learner to commit to at least one CCA each season and also to take part in at least one voluntary event per year.

CCAs do not run during school or public holidays.

ADDITIONAL LUNCHTIME & AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIESSWIMMING AT NEXUSPlease note that the Nexus Swim Squads will continue to train as established. This programme runs throughout the year. SERVICE & LEADERSHIP AT NEXUSWe encourage and support our learners in their service and leadership initiatives. Nexus has CCAs that are led by our Secondary students. These CCAs have an LL symbol next to them which indicates they are Learner Led.These acts of service will contribute to:

• Creativity, Action & Service (CAS) - this is a requirement of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

PRIMARY SCHOOL COUNCIL We consider every child at Nexus capable of taking on a leadership role. Stephanie Thompson will provide dedicated support sessions on Thursday lunchtime to nurture this student leader-ship initiativeIf you have an idea to make the world (or Nexus) a better place, we would love to get learner-initiated lunchtime activities started. Children are more than welcome to come along on and get involved.

LEARNER LEADERSHIP The Learner Leadership Team (LLT) is a 13 strong team of IBDP learners, made up of Lead Learners, House Leaders, Wellbeing Leaders and Lead Learner Mentors. These learners are role models that are a key part of the school community as they organise and support a wide range of whole-school events, initiatives and assemblies. The LLT team is also supported by a group of Learner Representatives from Year 7 to 11. These Learner Representatives meet together with the LLT and represent their year groups and forms to ensure that all learners contribute a valuable voice to decision making. As aspiring future leaders these learners also benefit from leadership training, allowing them to better support their peers as they grow and learn together.

8 NEXUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (SINGAPORE)

NEXUS IS AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IN THE TRUE SENSE OF THE WORD. CURRENTLY OUR LEARNERS COME FROM OVER 45 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES! WE ARE AWARE OF AT LEAST 24 LANGUAGES SPOKEN AS A FIRST OR HOME LANGUAGE BY OUR LEARNERS.

Whilst English is our common language, we must not underestimate the importance of our mother tongue, or home language(s), which form part of our identity.

Our Mother Tongue programme aims to engage learners and to give them an opportunity to maintain and practise their language skills together with other speakers of a similar age. However, a home language cannot just be cultivated through a weekly or twice weekly lesson. The family has the greatest influence on the development of a child’s language.

CCA MOTHER TONGUE PROGRAMMEWe are looking to provide classes in these mother tongue languages for learners in the following year groups. This will be dependent on the age range and meeting the minimum number of learners required for a class to start. Mother Tongue classes began on 20 January 2020. Next phase is Term 4

To register for any of the above language courses, or if you are an experienced teacher who would like to contribute to our programme in a language not listed above, please contact: [email protected].

Please note that there is no Mother Tongue programme during the last week of each term.

We regularly contact parents to gauge their interest with a view to offering other languages. If there is enough interest, and we can recruit a suitably experienced teacher, we will set up classes based on language interest.

Paula Kennedy-Wingate Deputy Head of School (Secondary)
