Christian monasteries and temples became the first centres of schooling. Most of the religious communities had a school, where

monks and priests were the first teachers.

In the 16th –18th centuries an ever-increasing number of schools were founded by the

communities – the so-called Brotherhoods.

The Greek-Slavonic-Latin Collegium, Ukraine’s first seat of higher learning,

was founded in Ostrog (Rivne region) in 1576.

In the 18th century

the level of public literacy

in Ukraine was higher than in

most western and eastern European countries. Schools could be found in most of the villages.

The first universities appeared in Lviv (1784), Kharkiv (1805), Kyiv (1834) and Odesa

(1865).

It should be mentioned that such a seat of higher learning as the Mohyla Academy came

to be as early as 1615. Until 1616 the Academy was the only institution of higher learning of

Eastern Europe.

The right to education in Ukraine is guaranteed by the Constitution (Article 53).

Every boy and girl must get secondary education; it means that secondary

education is compulsory in our country. There are state schools where education is

free of charge and private primary and secondary schools where pupils have to pay

for their studies.

There are the following stages of education:

Every school has a core curriculum and a school curriculum.

The core curriculum includes Ukrainian, Ukrainian Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, World Literature, a Foreign Language and others.

The educational system comprises more than 23 thousand preschool childcare

centres, but they are not obligatory. The basic link of the system is general

educational school; their total number equals to about 21 thousand now.

Most parents take their children to nursery schools or kindergartens at the age

of 3.

The children usually spend all day long there.

and write the letters. They also have the lessons of

Drawing and Handicrafts. Sometimes they learn

The general secondary education in Ukraine begins at the age of 6

The curriculum in those types of schools include such new subjects

as:

History of World Culture, History of Religion, two foreign

languages, and choreography together with the traditional

school subjects.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has developed the National Curriculum and the State Standards

in the main fields of science.

All the subjects in the secondary schools are obligatory but there are also elective courses that students of senior grades can

take.

The Independent Testing System in core school subjects has been introduced

recently.The results of the tests not only summarize

the level of knowledge a student has after finishing a secondary school but give the

student a chance to continue his/ her education in colleges and universities.

The Higher Education

The Higher Education is the post-secondary

education. Higher education gives fundamental scientific, general and practical

education. It may be full-time, part-time

or distance learning.

In Ukraine there are the following types of

higher educational establishments: technical schools,

colleges, institutes,

conservatories, academies,

universities, etc.

Among the institutions

of higher education special place belongs to universities. They train

specialists for various fields of science (physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, law, linguistics, etc.),

conduct post graduate courses and grant degrees. Universities offer a five-year course of study and usually have

from six to twelve departments.

Degrees of

higher education are the following:

bachelor's degree (usually after three years of study);

specialist degree (after five years of study and a diploma project),

master's degree (after post-graduate courses);

doctorate (after dissertation research approved, the degree is traditionally called 'candidate of science');

the degree of a doctor of science (after the second, more important dissertation approved).
