How to Count the Words
A word is a word. It can be one letter such as ‘a' and 'T'. It can also be a long word
such 'extraordinary’. As for proper nouns, you count them as one word.
Examples:
The United Kingdom - count as one word
Sarah Leong Ah Mooi - count as one word
Exercise 1
Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.
Writing a good resume is the first step in applying for a job. A resume is a self-
promotional document that presents you in the best possible light for the purpose
of getting invited to a job interview.
A resume is not an official personnel document. It is also not a confessional. It is
just about how you perform and what you have accomplished in past jobs especially
those accomplishments that are relevant to the job you are applying for. You can
create a resume that makes you stand out as a superior candidate for the job you

are king. With a well-written resume, you stand a better chance of being invited
to an interview.
A good resume predicts how you might perform in that desired future job. By
choosing your words with care in writing your resume, you show prospective
employers that you are good at the job. And if you lack work background, you can
still apply this packaging ploy to describe your school life and how it relates to the
position you are applying for.
What is important to remember is that your resume should not be a mere listing
of your college jobs, the courses you took, your grades and the seminars you
attended. Rather, it should point to your achievements, your leadership qualities
and how you can perform beyond expectations. It should give details about, for
instance, you won first prize in a school debate, then highlight that as an example
of your leadership skills. As for being a member of the Drama Club in school, say
that you took an active role organizing school plays. This is to prove your organizing
and coordinating skills. Your resume must show that you have potential.
What is the first step in writing a resume? Decide on a job target that can be
stated in about five or six words. Decide whether to use the chronological format
or a functional format. The chronological format is widely preferred by employers,
and works well if you are staying in the same field. Only use a functional format if

you are changing fields, and this format would show off your transferable skills to
better advantage.
There are some dos and don’ts to bear in mind when writing a resume. Do avoid
making spelling errors. Errors of any kind reflect poorly on the job applicant,
especially simple typo blunders. So proofread your resume over and over until you
are sure it is error-free. If possible, use power verbs. Enliven your resume with
action words that tell your prospective interviewers what you did and how well you
did it.
For example, instead of writing, “I learnt to use Excel,” say, “I assisted in drafting
worksheets using Excel.” Replace everything that starts with ‘responsibilities
included’ and replace it with on-the-job accomplishments. These words make a
better impression. Provide an overview of your general educational background. For
personal background, reveal only personal information that has bearing on the job
and not more than that.
In essence, writing a resume boils down to believing in yourself. The more
confident you are about yourself, the better the resume you will write.

Exercise 2
Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.
Social work is a profession that involves the application of social theory and
research methods to study and improve the lives of people, groups and societies.
Social workers are therefore concerned with social problems, their causes,
solutions and human impacts. This can mean providing direct services or therapy
directly to deal with the problems at hand.
The social work profession has its own body of knowledge, code of ethics, practice
standards, credentials and a nationwide system of accredited education
programmes. These equip the social workers to combine the desire to help others
with the knowledge, skill and ethics needed to provide that help.
Few occupations can match social work for it offers the broadest range of
opportunities and settings. Social workers can be found in public agencies, private
businesses, hospitals, clinics, schools, nursing homes, private practices, police
departments, courts and countless other interesting workplaces.
Most social workers specialize. Although some conduct research or are involved
in planning or policy development, most social workers prefer an area of practice
in which they interact with clients.

One such group, the child, family and school social workers provide social services
and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children. This
is done with the intention to maximize the family well-being and academic
functioning of children.
Others assist single parents, arrange adoptions and help find foster homes for
neglected, abandoned or abused children. In schools, they address such problems
as teenage pregnancy, misbehaviour and truancy. They also advise teachers on how
to cope with problem students.
Some social workers specialize in services for senior citizens. They run support
groups for family caregivers or for the families of aging parents. They often advise
elderly people or family members about choices in areas such as housing,
transportation, and long-term care.
Medical and public health social workers provide persons or families with the
psycho-social support needed to cope with chronic, acute or terminal illnesses such
as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer or AIDS. They also advise family caregivers,
counsel patients and help plan for patients’ needs after discharge by arranging for
at-home services.
As for mental health and substance abuse social workers, they assess and treat
individuals with mental illness and substance abuse problems, including abuse of

alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. Such services include individual and group therapy,
social rehabilitation and training in skills of everyday living. They may also help plan
for supportive services to ease patients’ return to the community.
There are a number of professional associations for social workers. The purpose
of these associations is to provide advocacy, ethical guidance and other forms of
support for their members and social workers in general. There are a number of
international regulatory bodies for professional social workers. Two of these are
the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) and the International
Association of Schools of Social Work.
Employment of social workers in private social service agencies is increasing
tremendously. It is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations
through 2012. The rapidly growing elderly population and the aging baby boom
generation will create a greater demand for health and social services, resulting in
particularly rapid job growth.
