Short Vowels

A short vowel says the vowels sound

Follow the CVC pattern

Examples:

hat pet

bit tot

cut

Long Vowels

A long vowel says the vowels name.

Add a silent –e to the end of a CVC word

Examples:hate Pete

bite note

cute

By adding an –e to the end of a CVC word with a short vowel sound the vowel turns to a long vowel

When you add a silent -e

Examples:

hat hate

pet Pete

bit bite

tot tote

cut cute

hug
