August 8 - 14, 2014

Dear Working Wise:I’m having a hard time finding enough inspectors for my non-de-structive testing company. Is the shortage expected to ease up soon or should I be looking at using the Canada Job Grant to help train more inspectors? Signed Looking for staff

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Do you have a work-related question?Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.

Dear Looking:

Demand for Non-Destructive Testers in Alberta is expected to level out within the decade

according to Alberta’s Occupational Demand and Supply Outlook 2013-2023. You can

read this 10-year forecast for Alberta’s labour market at http://eae.alberta.ca/lmi.

However, demand in the short term is expected to remain high according to the just released Short Term Employment Forecast 2013-2016. The full report is also available

at

http://work.alberta.ca/labour/short-term-employment-forecast.html.

The Short Term Employment Forecast ranks 260 occupations from high demand to low demand with 98 occupations in moderately high demand and up.

The 31 occupations expected to have the highest demand over the next three years include:

1. Senior Managers – Finance & Business 16. Computer Network Technicians

2. Sales, Marketing and Advertising Managers 17. Specialist Physicians

3. Accommodation Service Managers 18. Therapy/Assessment Technical Occupations

4. Other Services Managers 19. Technical Sales Specialists

5. Supervisors, Oce Administration 20. Chefs

6. Administrative Ocers 21. Hairstylists/Barbers

7. Civil Engineers 22. Carpentry Contractors/Supervisors

8. Mechanical Engineers 23. Machinists and Tooling Inspectors

9. Electrical/Electronics Engineers 24. Telecommunications Installation and Repair

10. Civil Engineering Technologists/Technicians 25. Steamtters, Pipetters, Sprinkler Installers

11. Mechanical Engineering Technologists 26. Welders and related Machine Operators

12. Construction Estimators 27. Construction Millwrights/Industrial Mechanics

13. Electrical Engineering Technologists 28. Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics

14. Industrial Instrument Technicians/Mechanics 29. Automotive Service Technicians

15. Non-Destructive Testers/Inspectors 30. Crane Operators

31. Residential/Commercial Installers

Considering that the shortage of testers is expected to continue for the next while, you might want to consider training some new sta.

As you suggested, the new Canada-Alberta Job Grant will help employers train the sta they need by providing up to $10,000 per employee for training. Employers will

be expected to contribute up to $5,000 per employee for a total maximum of $15,000.

The strength of this program is that it is employer driven – employers decide who gets trained and what type of training may be needed for new and existing employees.

Through the program, employers will be invested in the training decisions that will equip their current and future workers with the skills they need to ll available jobs.

For more information on the Canada-Alberta Job Grant program, visit: http://albertacanada.com/jobgrant. In the weeks to come, the webpage will be updated with the

roll-out of the program.

The program may begin accepting employer applications as early as September, but it’s best to check http://albertacanada.com/jobgrant frequently as new information

is posted.

Good luck!
