Around Edmond
By Sherri Hultner
This month is the most fun of any in and Around Edmond!
The last week of November on 11/29, there will be a Girls
Night Out at I’m Just Sayin Gifts at Waterloo & Broadway,
from 6 - 9 pm. Not to be missed, as Sidney is one of the most
fun people we know and she is giving away prizes, gift bags
& wine!
On November 23rd and open till Jan. 6, 2013 is the always
fun Edmond Outdoor Ice Rink, located at the Festival
Marketplace, on 1st St., west of Broadway, in Downtown
Edmond.
On December 1st, Hallie will be having her Christmas
Open House at Serendipity Market, on Danforth and next to
Ted’s. There will be 15% off or more, Hourly door prizes and
a Gift Certificate drawing. The hours for this open house are
9:30 to 6:30 pm. Also, Dec. 1st kicks off Holiday Hours at
Serendipity Market which will be Thurs. 9:30 am to 7 pm and
they will be open Sundays from 1 - 5:30 pm.
On pages 20 - 23, you’ll find the most comprehensive light
display guide of any in the entire metro, for our 4th year for
both Edmond and metro wide. The research involved in
creating this guide was the most fun we’ve ever had!
On pages 8-9, we are highlighting some of the most tasty
and beautiful cookies we’ve ever seen from Kelley Hart
Cookies. Kelley and her husband Andy (designer at Chocolate
Skateboards and an amazing designer/artist) are old friends
and we wanted to share these edible pieces of art with you!
On pages 10-11, we highlight some of the most amazing
items offered by our advertisers, from the best sheets you’ll
ever sleep on from Arcadian Inn Bed and Breakfast to $300
Champagne offered by Edmond Wine Shop. It’s a fun way to
see items we all don’t normally see every day, and we hope to
do this feature more often!
On pages 12 - 13, we highlight the huge accomplishment
of Edmond Wine Shop’s own and newly certified Sommelier,
Amie Hendrickson. She is only one of 1,054 women in the
US to have this certification, is very difficult to acheive and
Edmond is lucky to have her!
In My Home, this month’s project tackles decorating odd
spaces, Shop Edmond has all the holiday events happening
with our advertisers along with specials they may be having
and In Business, with Edmond attorney Jeff Taylor, as he
touches on the things he’s thankful for. Jeff is an amazing
writer and we are so happy to have him!
We have a story of the rise to the Championship for the
Lady Huskies Softball Team, a story about what’s new with
Pole Position Raceway, and an area school Football wrap up,
too.
We hope you enjoy this issue, thanks for reading!

I started writing for Edmond Active just about one year
ago. I recall last year’s article, about this time, being a
reminiscent story of my childhood, and the example of my
father.
Since that time, I’ve had several other times to reflect
upon the goodness of my life, including my upbringing and
mentors. This month, I reflected heavily on the experiences,
lessons, and examples that made me, me. Here are some of
the things I’m thankful for:
Family - love them or hate them, there’s nobody else
who will forgive you, sacrifice for you, and stand by you
like parents, siblings, and a spouse. Whatever success lies
outside the walls of your home, pales in comparison to the
success within your home’s walls.
Spouse - my spouse is a solid foundation in my life, who
keeps me grounded and sublime. She’s ever my champion,
and more often my realist. She knows me often better than
I know myself.
Religion - there’s nothing more grounding or edifying
than having a sanctimonious relationship with a being or
entity you recognize as greater than yourself. Without a
guiding light, ships would flounder, and so will we.
Employment - in tough times, when many people
struggle to meet their daily needs, it’s nice to know I have
an arena to go to and and fight to provide some of the basic
necessities for my family.
Neighbors - we have fallen in love with our neighborhood,
not because of the location, the name, or any fancy homes,
but because of the simple individuals we share our street
with.
Edmond Active - I can’t help but be grateful for the
opportunity to contribute to a great publication. This article
gives me a creative outlet and an opportunity to share
knowledge and information, without thoughts of rewards.
Volunteerism - I serve as a member of the Board of
Directors for a nonprofit community organization serving
the homeless. In this position, I see first hand how
drugs, alcohol, and other vices ruin people’s lives, create
unnecessary dependencies, and diminish self-worth. I also
see how spiritualism and caring can bring someone back
from the depths of misery, despair, and ruin. Ultimately, it’s
caring individuals who contribute time, money, and other
resources that provide the greatest help.
As you sit down to start this holiday season, I encourage
you to find opportunities to be thankful, and show
appreciation for the many gifts, talents, and love of others.

Finding something truly unique and beautiful for gifts can be difficult at
times. With all the big box stores out there carrying generic goods that are all
the same as every other shopping outlet, it’s a breath of fresh air when you
find something different. Something painstakingly made by hand by a true
artist who cares about what she creates. Kelley Jenkins is one such person.
Kelley Hart Creations is her company and she handcrafts everything from
clothes to cookies. In fact, Kelly makes the coolest cookies we’ve ever seen.
And she makes them for all different occasions. She makes custom cookies for
private, corporate events or parties. We personally recommend her and use her
services as often as we can. To see some of her amazing work go to

Amie HendricksonA Sommelier Amongst Us
What is a Sommelier? The short answer to that question is that a Sommelier is person with extensive knowledge of wines and other spirits, wine producing grapes, different wine regions around the world and well versed in wine theory--literally, a wine and spirits expert. In practice a Sommelier would be responsible for pairing food with the correct wine in a restaurant, creating and maintaining a proper wine list and inventory and helping patrons make a more informed wine selection.
The process to becoming a certified Sommelier is lengthy and arduous. Certification is only the second step, of four, in becoming a Master Sommelier. Most Sommeliers stop at the certification step, because the exam for Master Sommelier takes years to prepare for and only has an 8% pass rate. In fact, there are less than 300 Master Sommeliers in the world today.
Amie Hendrickson, manager of Edmond Wine Shop at 15th and Boulevard, recently passed the certification portion of the Sommelier exam through the Court of Master Sommeliers. She is now one of only 3,440 certified Sommeliers in the country--of which only 1,054 are women. And as far as we know, Amie is the only Sommelier working in retail in Oklahoma.
The next step for Amie, a true wine professional, is to get certified as a wine educator rather than taking the plunge and going for Master Sommelier. The thing she has enjoyed most, during her 14 years at Edmond Wine Shop, is helping people navigate through their extensive wine selection to find the right wine for them.
My Home
14
After much conversation this summer with our readers, we decided to touch upon the subject of that one odd space everyone seems to have in their home that isn’t being used, and that no one really knows what to do with.
In a perfect world, all of our homes spaces would be perfectly utilized, organized and ready for our families and guests to use and enjoy. However, this is not the case, as our readers told us.
When we moved to Edmond 8 years ago, we found we had a space, as you walk in our front door, with only one usable wall.
This space was originally a formal dining room that had a hutch on this wall. The space had dark mint green paint, a brass chandelier and to it’s credit, really great window coverings. I placed 3 pictures on the wall, purchased the chairs you see to the right and that is how it has looked for 7 years. Not because I am not creative but because I genuinely didn’t have time to figure out what to do with it.
I decided enough is enough with mint green walls and olive green chairs this fall, especially after seeing a photo
of a room that was created in a space identical to this.
However the space in the photo I saw cost $3,799.00 to achieve.
I felt the challenge come over me that it could be done for $300 or less, and I almost hit the mark. We painted the walls tan and were able to reproduce the space identically after we went to local Edmond stores to match accessories & furniture.
We made our own sofa table out of pine for $46, which saved us at least $100, because we couldn’t find one in the right color and it is the anchor to this project. You can get something more substantial at Serendipity Market, but you will have to check in there often for one that suits your style, as their stock is continually changing.
Now, this area is a really comfortable reading space that everyone ends up in at the end of the day. This project took 2 days from start to finish, and I believe that anyone could accomplish a functional redesign of any odd space for $300 or less, if you focus on the specific function of the room. One photo inspired me, hopefully this will inspire you.

I’ve found some amazing pieces for layering this fall at Funky Monkey, Lush, and Retropolitan which are all locally owned boutiques here in Edmond.
My favorite pieces which are flowing blouses and print jeans can be found at Funky Monkey at 14101 N. May Ave. Jennifer did an amazing job at picking affordable, amazing fashion this season! Also, wrap sweaters and dresses with leggings or ponte pants are very popular this season for any shape, size or age.
The combination to the left came from Kohl’s North Edmond and the cost for the entire outfit was $65.
Below is a long silk hooded sweater over a long t with ponte pants, for a total of $60 for the entire outfit.

Feel The Need For Speed?
Check Out Pole Position Raceway
If you are into racing and haven’t tried Pole Position Raceway, on May and NW 36th Street, you don’t know what you’re missing. For most people it’s the closest you’ll ever get to experiencing the speed, thrill and adrenalin rush of strapping yourself into a race car and hitting the track.
The high performance karts used at Pole Position are capable of hitting a top speed of 45 miles per hour. And the Grand Prix course design is ever changing. There
When you arrive-and-drive at Pole Position you’re entered into a computer database that tracks your lap times. So each time you race there you can see how much you’re improving--you can even check your times online. You can also bring all your friends and go head to head for bragging rights.
Pole Position is also available for birthday parties, corporate and team building events, special group events and other public or private events.
We’ve watched Pole Position grow over the last few years from their original location in California to where they are now with 9 locations across the country. There are even plans in the works for a Pole Position in Tulsa.
Pole Position also offers annual memberships where you can get discounted prices when you race. The more you race, the more you save. So if you have a would-be racer in your house, a Pole Position membership would be a great Christmas gift. Just sayin’.

Jordan Dixon had a lot to live up to when she took to the field to pitch for the Edmond North girls softball team in the finals for the State Championship. As a senior, this was her fourth trip to the playoffs for the Lady Huskies and her last chance at a State title. To add to the pressure, Jordan’s two older sisters were there to watch her pitch. Miranda (pitcher) and Leslie (catcher), were on the last Edmond North Team to win the State Championship in 2004. Bragging rights were definitely at stake in the House of Dixon.
Winning a State Championship in fast pitch softball is no easy task. Since 1953, Edmond schools have only won the title 3 times. Memorial won it in ’87 and ’93. And North won it in 2004. But as of the last few years the Edmond teams have been among the best in the state--they just haven’t been able to close the deal as far as the state title is concerned.
For Edmond North, this was destined to be the year it all came together. After losing 2 games to Broken Arrow early in the season they went on a 32-game winning streak that included the playoffs and the State Championship.
In the finals at the State Championships the Lady Huskies made it look easy as they dominated the Moore Lions. With Jordan Dixon pitching, and thanks to some great defensive plays in the field, the Huskies held the Lions to just 2 runs.
When it was their turn at bat the North girls took charge. They scored 2 runs in the first inning, a rally to four runs in the second, two more in the fourth and finished up with three more runs in the sixth. The final score was 11-2 in the Huskies favor.
A Date With Destiny

The football season is over for Edmond North and Santa Fe. It came to an end it much the same way it did last season for the two teams--in the second round of the playoffs. Once again both teams had to face off agains the juggernaut that is Jenks and Tulsa Union. And once again both of our teams fell. This time around, North traveled to Jenks to play them in front of their partisan crowd, while Santa Fe got the home field advantage against Union.
While Santa Fe fought the good fight at Wantland Stadium, too many mistakes and turnovers did them in. Not to mention that the Union Redskins were a bigger and faster team. In spite of it all Justice Hansen still had a good night behind the ball. He threw for 344 yards, two touchdowns and he ran one in himself. While Santa Fe never gave up, there were unable to match the Union offense who seemed able to strike at will. In the end it was a 59-19 loss for the Wolves.
Edmond North suffered much the same fate in Jenks’ home territory. While the North defense was able to keep the game much closer for most of the match, Jenks closed the deal in the fourth quarter with 3 touchdowns. The final score was a 34-12 loss for the Huskies.
Both Edmond teams have nothing to be down about. They both finished the season with 10-2 records and they both made it to the second round of the playoffs. Last season North was 9-3 and Santa Fe matched their record from last season at 10-2.
The next round of the playoffs will pit Union and Jenks against each other in the semifinal round. This game will essentially be the state championship game, since whoever wins will undoubtedly go on to win state title.
