    OBJECTIVE

    Edm instrument is calibrated on a base to determine instrument constant and errors. If

    significant, corrections should be applied to EDM measurements taken subsequently to

    the calibration.

    To get the distance using EDM and prism. Should be able to explain the basic concept of EDM.

    Students be able to know and understand the technique to EDM measurements

    PROCEDURE

    First place a peg at the point where the five station (pentagon) shape. One bench mark or

    temporary bench mark choose up to set the early back sights. Ensure the bench mark or

    temporary bench mark is clear and fix.

    Set up the first bearing by used prismatic method assumed the value is 00000. Set up

    the theodolite as station 1 and observed to bench mark or temporary bench mark. To fixthe bearing, value of bearing need to set up in theodolite and button HOLD pushed.

    Set the prism at bench mark or temporary bench mark as proper. Bench mark or

    temporary bench mark was observed from station 1. To get the distance of value, pushed

    the button measure.

    Recorded the data to the field book and the step to another station need to repeated to get

    the distance and bearing. Ensure three extra point was observed for every station to fix

    the station.

    DISCUSSION

    EDM or Electronic Distance Measurement totally will make our work to get the distance

    reading in fieldwork faster and accurately. We have use total station to get distance in ourfieldwork. We have to handle the instrument carefully and use it with correct technique to avoid

    the mistake in our data. After that, we also have to calculate our data to get the actual reading or

    distance to our fieldwork. EDM have brought the innovation to Civil Engineering especially for

    construction work. It is more suitable to use when we have to do survey work on large area of the

    fieldwork. As we know that the instrument of EDM is expensive, so we used this chance to learn

    and handle it. The instruction that given by our lecture are clearly and easy to understand. We

    make sure every person from our team understand and learnt it carefully as we know this is the

    important part in survey work. Finally, every person from my team very satisfied with our work

    in our journey to learn the new things that very valuable to us. We hope this experience will help

    us on our Industrial Practical when we in semester 6.

    SUGGESTION

    Overall from our practical were done correctly we satisfied with that. We suggest that every

    equipment that we want to use in fieldwork need to check it and ensure it in a good condition to

    avoid any problem during our work and make our work smoothly.

    CONCLUSION

    a) What is the difference in the fieldwork between using total station with using digital

    theodolite?

    Total station is an electronic used in modern surveying. Our work became faster and

    suitable used to measure large area at fieldwork compare to theodolite.

    b) What is the difference in calculation between using manual calculation or with computer

    calculation program?

    We can short our time to get the correct calculation. Then we can avoid from any error in

    calculating because it more accurate.

    c) Did the plotting obtained from the computer program is similar with the manual plotting?

    If we plot it with a correct technique, it will exactly same but computer program will be

    shown the clearer image and make our work easily and it better than manual plotting.

    d) Give full explanation about the usages of total station/EDM in civil work smoothly.

    Electronic Distance Measurement also called EDM is an instrument that combines

    several types of surveying method with electronic system. It is an electronic instrument

    used in modern surveying. The total station is an electronic theodolite integrated with an

    electronic distance measurement to read slope distances from the instrument to a

    particular point. Robotic total stations allow the operator to control the instrument from

    distance via remote control. This eliminates need for an assistant staff member as the

    operator holds the reflector and controls the total station from the observed point.
