What if the following items were available for all learners and educators? an Internet-enabled device for every teacher and student in the country (Ray, 2011, p.1) universal broadband access for homes and schools (Ray, 2011, p. 1). an embrace of cloud computing, openly-licensed educational materials and open source technologies (Ray, 2011, p. 1).These are part of the new education technology recommendations from the U.S. Department of Education (Ray, 2011, p. 1).

IntroductionWelcome to our generation of teaching, A classroom without walls open the door to the mobile classroom (Nagel, 2010, p.1).Today Ill be sharing some information about our district technology plan and the National Education Technology Plan.In order for our staff and learners to continue to learn and grow from technology, we must stay informed and up to date.I will offer suggestions to help us continue on our technology path.

Existing ConditionsThe current status of technology implementation in Arlington ISD includes: Bond monies were used to purchase new technology in many areas this year.Many campuses are making plans to purchase the second round of technology items for the new school yearEach classroom, library and office is connected to local area, wide area and Internet networks;Each classroom and library has networked multimedia teacher and student stations; Each classroom and office has secure access to management software such as gradebook, attendance reporting, and student records which can now be accessed at home as well Every employee has access to district wide email; Each elementary campus has two 30-station computer labs; In addition to numerous computer labs dedicated to specific courses, each secondary campus has multi-purpose laptop labs for student use;

Existing Conditions ContinuedEach secondary campus has a distance learning classroom and/or a mobile lab that allows students and staff to participate in video conferencing activities;A district wide preview and purchase process is available for teachers to request and acquire instructional software and/or access to fee-based online resources; All administrative and instructional computers have productivity software that is standard district wide; An online database system allows any employee to register for staff development sessions. ARLINGTON ISD Technology Plan for E-Rate Year 12 2007 - 2010Technology Needs:Projects and tasks over the next three years will include: Increase student use of technology; Increase the number of AISD teachers who have successfully completed the Texas Teacher Technology Competencies Certification (TTCC) Program; Continue the eight-year replacement program for classroom workstations; Continue building an online database of student assessment data with links to online lessons to help teachers where needed; Evaluate existing library technology to determine future upgrades;

AISD Technology Plan Continued Evaluate and expand existing video conferencing systems, with emphasis on moving to a district-based IP solution; Continue the use of E-Rate supported networks for internet connections; Implementation of new business systems, including Human Resource, Finance, and Payroll systems, to support next generation solutions for the district; Develop online and streaming video content to highlight teaching methods and district programs;

Arlington ISD monitors the use of technology and technology implementations as an active part of the day-to-day operations of the district once a year. This on-line plan is built and revised based on campus feedback and the teacher and campus STaR charts. The STaR charts will provide important information related to staff development plans and to the success of the implementation.

Annually the plan will be reviewed to ensure that the latest technological advances are taken into consideration. The Assistant Superintendent for Technology and Telecommunications will be responsible for assembling the group to review the plan and the progress of the district. Determining Where the Need Will be

Technology FundingThese are some of the ways AISD funded technology:Bond monies presented to voters. It included a $261.68 million bond package for brick, mortar and technology to be implemented over a ten-year time frame covering the 2000-2010 school years. Goals, Objectives, and Strategies for AISD TechnologyGoal 1: Ensure that students are proficient at subject-area and Technology Applications TEKS.Goal 2: Ensure that teachers are proficient at SBEC/TEA Technology Competencies and national standards.Goal 3: Ensure that district administrators possess the technology skills needed to perform their job responsibilities efficiently.Goal 4: Improve, update and expand the district's technology infrastructure.Goal 5: Provide access to appropriate data and information to all of the district's shareholders - students, parents, teachers, administrators and members of the community.Goal 6: Improve library services.Goal 7: Institute systems which ensure that data is accurate and protected against catastrophic loss.(ARLINGTON ISD Technology Plan for E-Rate Year 12 2007 2010)

National Education Technology Plan Recommendations: The National Education Technology Plan addresses student learning and assessment, as well as teacher professional development and our technology infrastructure. Some of its specific technology recommendations include: Adequate broadband and wireless access inside and outside of school At least one Internet-enabled device for every student and educator -- at home and at school Use of Creative Commons and open licenses in course content and support for OpenCourseWare endeavors R&D into the use of gaming, simulations, and virtual worlds for instruction and assessment Encouragement of cloud computing for school districts, freeing local IT resources for other purposes Development of computerized assessment tools that are both adaptive -- that is, respond to student's own input -- and accessible Changes to FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act) to open access to student data and enable better data portability for student and financial records Changes to CIPA (Childrens Internet Protection Act) to open access to the Internet and rethink how filtering works in schools(Ray, 2011, p. 1)

We as an educational community must, focus what and how we teach to match what people need to know and how they learnconcepts to enable, motivate, and inspire all students to achieve (Nagel, 2010, p. 1).

Now we can move forward with the planning process. I am going to demonstrate two ways to address many of the items I have mentioned in this presentation in regards to the National Education Technology Plan. These suggestions will offer awareness and on-line information with easy access for the AISD staff. I will address Category 5: Teaching as this is where the students must learn directly. This is a good start in regards to addressing various technology tools for teachers.

Ways to Help Our District

Category 5: TeachingAmong the recommendations for reaching the teaching goals outlined in the plan are:Expanding access to online instructional materials for teachers;Creating communities of practice using social networking technologies;Taking advantage of distance learning to provide expanded educational opportunities for all students;Using technology to provide training to pre-service and in-service teachers; andPreparing teachers for online instruction and approaching teacher certification in a new way to help make online instruction more viable.(Nagel, 2010, p. 3)

Suggestion # 1 AISD Technology FairAll employees are invited on a teacher workday to see all the exciting technology tools that are available the first week back from the summer break when staff is refreshed and ready to become motivatedPerhaps one day in the week for secondary education staff and the next for other levelsItems will be loaded to the AISD website for review and updatesEasy access to this information will be available to help with future lesson planning and assistance, especially for those that plan at home and are learning about these new toolsA follow up will be offered at the next staff development Perhaps teachers at each campus can watch a podcast with a follow up message and continue to share on their campus ideas that are working in the classroom.Tech Trainers and Technology Specialists will attend, assist, and learn Lunch will be served and door prizes will be given. These two items alone will attract interest and excitement.

Technology Fair ContinuedTeachers around the district will present lessons that they have found exciting and effective using the technology. Guest speakers from other districts, universities, or businesses will also be invited to attend and speakDoor prizes in the form of teacher tools such as technology self help guides, instruction ideas, and actual tools for the classroom.All of the items will be posted to the AISD web site for later viewing to include podcasts, lessons, and contact information.Excitement will build with the ideas and collaboration that can be shared.

What do we do now?The challenge will be helping spread these ideas, their lessons -- not just through formal federal mandates but at the grassroots level -- and supporting all educators who endeavor to implement technology in the classroom (Ray, 2011, p. 1) which is what brings me to my plan. We all need to be on the same page in order to help our learners and educators to advance with technology use.

# 2 - Student/Parent Information SessionsParents and students will be invited to attend with door prizes and good foodAgain, technology items will be given to families to use and enjoyThe importance of using technology safely and effectively will be shared Examples of projects that are used in the classroom will be displayed and demonstratedParents and students are invited to walk around to visit with staff and business people in order to network and explore what is happening in our classrooms and workforceParents will further understand why they too must understand technology so they can help their students as well as themselvesBeing able to check student grades, attendance, and communicate with teachers are only a few of the many tools that will be mentioned.

Together, lets make a difference to shape our learning community for many years to come.
