VARIABLE = CONSTANT

By Saurabh Dadasaheb Khot`

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and

sorry I could not travel both…...

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.”

Presented above are the verses from one

dynamic Poem by Robert Frost, called “The

Road Not Taken”.

The Phrase “The Road Not Taken” translates to the

path one didn’t choose to walk on. Adhering to the

literal sense, “The Path” could have innumerable

renderings. In this context, its simplest implication

would be a choice or a decision. A choice is a hinge

to one’s destination. With the liberty to choose,

comes responsibility.

Driven by ambition and passion, one who is aware,

brave, wise and resourceful enough, chooses to live

by his purpose. This purpose is not always in line

with the precedent standards. This could be the road

less travelled by. Since the earliest days of our youth,

we have been conditioned to accept the direction of

the herd and authority. However, every so often, it

becomes imperative to avoid the crowd and go solo.

Go Maverick! As the eminent author Ralph Charrel

quotes “Be the chess player, Not the chess piece “, it

becomes important to be your own leader and think

independently, particularly in an unconventional

endeavour.

Typically, an “Out of Ordinary” voyage implies

uncertainty.

Not many people are comfortable with uncertainty

and probability due to the discomfort, confusion and

fear it brings along. Fear of failure; Fear of error;

Although our intellect longs for clarity and certainty,

it is what keeps the quest alive, drives human brains

to discover novel ideas, invent tools and make

powerful decisions.

The Key though is acceptance; Acceptance of the fact

that “The only certainty is uncertainty” and “Change

is the only constant”. This permanence of change,

makes “Adaptability” an urgent and principal skill.

As Charles Darwin, the Father of Evolution quotes “It

is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the

most intelligent ...It is the one that is most ‘Adaptable’

to change”.

Bhagavad-Gita says in one of its verses that “Change

is the law of Universe”. One should not let the fear of

what could happen, make nothing happen. Ergo,

Embrace Change. Embrace Uncertainty.

Entrepreneurs, for instance, devote a large portion of

their minds for processing uncertainties. Attributing

to external factors like political upheaval and

industrial shake-ups, unpredictability is always there.

In addition, they are in the business of creating the big

chunks of the future, the unknown! Nonetheless,

every business owner knows that without risk, there is

no reward. By grasping the ambiguity, considering

multiple outcomes, being flexible and having a

competent risk management team, Entrepreneurs

often adapt themselves to the changing requirements

of the global market. An excerpt from the business

section of the Forbes magazine reads, “Uncertainty

forms a core part of the speculation and investment in

a business. To be a top leader, therefore, business

owners will need to appreciate uncertainty and deal

with it as it appears”.

Likewise, in science, absolute certainty is strenuous to

achieve. As a matter of fact, most of the scientific

researches begin with assumptions and probabilities.

In the due course of the research, these assumptions

are challenged and the uncertainty is reduced.

Theories keep changing as one scientist disproves the

thesis formulated by the other. Newton’s law of

Gravitation stood as an undisputed law governing the

Page 24: EDITORS CONTENTS

universe. However, in the recent study of black

MARCH, 2021

21

holes, the universality of Newton’s law was put into

test and dismissed. The Theory of Relativity given

by Einstein held more relevance. And yet again there

is change, quest for truth and uncertainty. Inscience,

error precedes truth.

Besides, William Osler, A Canadian Physician

quotes “Medicine is a science of uncertainty and art

of probability”. In such a field, there are known to be

beautiful accidents. The most prominent of them all

would be the discovery of penicillin by Alexander

Fleming, which revolutionized medical science. All

of this dubiety, scepticism, change and uncertainty

might appear to be an infinite staircase in one’s

journey. This could be overwhelming. The key is to

understand that one doesn’t have to look at the entire

staircase but take the first step! A plain analogy could

be the headlights of a car. As the renowned author

jack Canfield explains, “For a journey of 200 miles

in the dark, the headlights of a car can make it to only

200 feet at a time. You cover that part of the road and

the next 200 feet unfolds. In the same way, units of

200 feet keep unravelling and boom! You arrive at

your destination”.

Equivalently, in a dynamic expedition, take one step

at a time. Accustom yourself to the changes, be

adaptable and conquer fear.

A wise man adapts himself to circumstances, as

water shapes itself to the vessel that contains it. Each

of us has the opportunity to change and grow until

our very last breath.

Lastly, here’s a provoking paraphrase by Bruce Lee

- “All fixed set patterns are incapable of adaptability

or pliability. The truth is outside of all fixed

patterns.”

Keep growing, Happy Creating.
