Das Autobahn is the winning team of this year’s Teams’ Tournament.

Mads Eyde, Dennis Bilde, Nedju Buchlev and Sebastian Reim kept ‘en

route’, winning all matches today, scoring 12.77, 17.50 and 16.90. The Portuguese Dream Team 17 (Nuno Matos, Carlos Luiz, Rodrigo M

Soares, Miguel Teixeira, Nuno Paz and Reinaldo Timoteo) also won all of

their matches and climbed to 2nd place overall, with 156.58 VPs. Today, team

Multon (K Ward-Platt,

Frank Multon, Peter

Bertheau and Jessica

Hayman) lost their first

match against Das

Autobahn and won the

remaining two. It wasn’t

enough to keep them in

second place. They

finished 3rd, 1.75 VPs

behind the Portuguese. And all there is left for us to do is to is to have dinner together –

another record- breaking event!

The Madeira Bridge Open by Hans Metselaar

There are bridge tournaments and then there is “Madeira”. Having played all

over the world makes the comparison to other events easy. The difference is

that on Madeira you belong to the family. That is the feeling you get from the

care and attention the organization is giving the participants. With eye to detail

and in an impressive team effort the tournament grows from strength to

strength. And rightly it should. Each and everyone in the committee is a staunch

ambassador of this wonderful island. And so it is not only about the bridge, it is

about culture, hospitality, friendship and more! It is a privilege to belong to this

Having been involved in the Madeira Bridge Tournament since the last century

when we had people like Omar Sharif, Benito Garozzo, Zia Mahmood , Rixie Markus, the

Priday couple and many others, I feel that this year, this tournament has exploded not

only in quantity ( 155 pairs and 68 teams) but also in quality.

It really was a pleasure to be able to meet people that have been coming to

Madeira for years and obviously to be able to meet new people.

To the newcomers I wish that you got addicted to this tournament as all the good

friends that come every year.

Madeira is a small island but with an enormous HEART, open to all the visitors,

even those that get up on the wrong side of bed every morning.

Thank God that after a couple of nights in our beautiful island no one is able to be

upset and, if nothing else helped, they got a “PONCHA” to put them on the right track.

I do wish my father was here to see the enormous success this Bridge Festival has

become for he was not only a big afficionado of Bridge but also very proud of our

hospitality.

Concerning the bridge itself all I can say is that I am lucky enough to have a very

good friend for partner who excuses my bad temper.

To finish I hope you all had a nice stay in our island and wish to see you back next

year, bringing your friends to the “PEARL OF THE ATLANTIC” and all I can promise

you is that we will all be here to welcome you back.

In both rooms North played in Four Spades. In the Open Room Dennis Bilde received

the lead of queen of Diamonds. He won with the ace and cashed three rounds of hearts

discarding his diamonds, starting with the ace. East ruffed the third round and

continued with another diamond ruffed in hand. Declarer now lead the trump king from

his hand, taken by West who now blotted his copybook by not leading a club – the

contract was now safe. In the closed room, however declarer was not so fortunate and

suffered one off for thirteen IMPs out.

When West elected to open One Spade there would be no stopping him after partner

showed his distributional support. The play was easy, declarer electing to ruff three

hearts in hand. That was 11 IMPs to Das Autobahn who ran out winners 37 – 0 or 19.37 –

0.77 Vps.

The final board of the night again featured Das Autobahn but this time against Dream

Team.

At both tables North ended in 3NT and received the lead of a small club won in hand

with the ten. After cashing the ace and king of spades the nine of diamonds is played

from the dummy – the moment of truth has arrived – take the right finesse and with

some luck the contract will make. Take the wrong decision and you will go down. Which

do you play and why? With the pips you have I can see a minute advantage in playing to

the queen as that wins also when the jack is singleton in the East hand – not very likely.

I know that in the Open Room there had been no opposition bidding so declarer had no

help there and he did not chose wisely. In the closed room declarer had some help with

East getting in on the act. Declarer still had to guess right so when he led the nine of

diamonds and West graciously covered, this solved all declarer’s problems and that was

Most players ruffed with a heart honour hoping for Ax in the West hand, but

Maria had a clue. The contract can’t make, as when in with the A another club from

West promotes a setting trump trick for East.

The lead of the 7 was covered with J taken with K. A and a heart followed.

As a result of the opening Multi bid, declearer ruffed with A, and ran J to

Skjonnemanns lovely single lady. A heart ruff in East killed the contract, as the defence

still had a diamond trick to come. Down one and all the matchpoints for the Danes.
