Editorial

The Second Vatican Council called the family as the first and vital institution for the up keeping of the Church and society.

The most beautiful thing that God created is a family. Nowadays, we see a breakdown of families the effect of which can be seen within the families, community life and society. Individuals are struggling with the problems of individualism, relativism, materialism, rationalism, and secularization. If we go on this way, it will cause great destruction to the individuals, families, society and environment at large. To avoid such an extreme situation we have a Holy Family as a model family which will rescue us from such destruction. It is good to ponder over the qualities of the Holy Family which will surely stand as a guiding light to our troubled world.

Qualities of the Holy Family (characteristics)

1. Strong belief in God: Jesus, Mary and Joseph were a family called and formed by God. They were called to be united in one mind and heart.

2. The Holy Family is a family with different persons, with varied temperaments and different personalities. Each one was unique and different but still they listened to God and to one another. They showed kindness and compassion for one another. They were patient with each other.

3. In the Holy Family there was unity in diversity. – Jesus, Mary and Joseph prayed, worked, and stayed together for a purpose. They were gentle, kind, humble and generous with their care for one another.

4. Genuine charity is the hallmark of the Holy Family: Jesus is the incarnation of charity and love. Joseph and Mary received Jesus with great love. They never felt burdensome of caring for one another.

5. The Holy Family had a single goal to achieve at all cost – the salvation of humanity. God brought them together with a specific purpose - that is salvation to all in Jesus Christ. This strong belief in God made them to go on in life in spite of difficulties. They desired to see that the goal is achieved in spite of pain and suffering.

In the faith formation of modern families we need to draw inspiration from some of the wonderful qualities of the Holy Family. We need to reflect and become aware of those qualities which will enlighten and enrich us so that we form ourselves to be faith-filled, grace-filled and exemplary families to the families of our times.

The young people of our families need to inculcate the virtues of obedience and respect for the elders. The senior members need to be kind and patient with the young. As a single unit,

a family needs to deepen their belief in God. They need to understand that it is God who called and formed the family for a specific purpose so that the family follows the example of the Holy Family. Every family needs to be connected to God through prayer, singing, and thanksgiving for all the graces that the family receives from God. As Joseph and Mary listened to God and accepted Jesus in their life so also the modern families need to read the Bible and listen to the Word of God and accept Jesus in their families. Having listened to the Word of God, the Holy Family acted upon the Word of God even though it was painful at times. They were obedient to the Word of God till the end of their lives. They believed in the providence of God. The families of today need to have a common goal and purpose and meet that goal though it might hurt them and challenge them at times to reach that goal. The Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Family so that the families of today reflect and resonate about the virtues and qualities of Jesus, Joseph and Mary and inculcate those virtues in their lives.

Holiness is the hallmark of the Holy Family. In today’s world, the parents are called to be holy and enable the children to be holy so that the family receives the blessings in abundance. Here the parents are like gardeners where they help the children to grow and excel to be children of God in word and deed. Our Christian families are called to be families with abundance of love, joy, compassion, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness, self-control and forgiveness. These fruits of the Holy Spirit energize the families and continue to revive family relations. Families need to give genuine and quality time to one another. As St. Paul tells us let us have the mind of Christ and be humble like Christ and be obedient to the will of God. Let us pray so that we may ponder over the qualities of the Holy Family and practice them in our families. May God continue to shower his choicest blessings upon all the families of the world by which we imitate the virtues of the Holy Family.

Vatican NewsTHE HOLY FAMILY WE VENERATE:To appreciate the Holy Family in all its beauty and fullness, we should see them not as figures carved from wood or moulded from plaster. We should see them, instead, as flesh and blood—people who struggled, who worked, who suffered. St. Paul famously wrote of Christ, “He was a man like us in all things but sin”. I think the same could be said of the Holy Family. They were like us. They knew the kinds of setbacks, disappointments, challenges that every family faces. They are patrons of every family, in every circumstance—even those like so many of us who are far from perfect.

First, they are patrons of those who are outcast. They are a family nobody had room for. And they are a family that was forced to run for their lives. This has a special urgency

and relevance today. Nearly a century ago, Pope Pius XII wrote: “The émigré Holy Family of Nazareth, fleeing into Egypt, is the archetype of every refugee family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, living in exile in Egypt to escape the fury of an evil king, are, for all times and all places, the models and protectors of every migrant, alien and refugee of whatever kind who, whether compelled by fear of persecution or by want, is forced to leave his native land, his beloved parents and relatives, his close friends and to seek a foreign soil.”

Jesus, Mary and Joseph are the family in Iraq, displaced to Kurdistan, fleeing the terror of ISIS. They are migrants from Central America, seeking a better life in the fields of Texas. They are the family you see huddled under a bridge, with no place else to go, worrying about where the journey of life will take them and who will give them shelter. They are the people so many in our society overlook or look past. The Holy Family intercedes on behalf of those who are desperate and alone.

Secondly, they are the patrons of parents who live with fear and anxiety. The first words of the Angel Gabriel to a startled young Mary were words to guide her through life: “Do not be afraid”. She probably recalled those words again and again throughout the next three decades. She would have much to fear: an unexpected pregnancy, an arduous journey to give birth in a faraway city, death threats, living in a strange place far from family and friends, making ends meet in a hostile and uncertain world, searching for a missing child, watching that child grow into manhood—and watching, too, as He stood trial, suffered and died.

These are people who day by day lived with mystery and uncertainty. But they also lived with trust in God and obedience to His will. This is what held them together. They are the advocates for every parent whose child has gone missing, or

whose bank account is dwindling, or whose son is on death row. They stand beside every mother and father who wonders what God has planned, how they will get through the next day, next week, next month—and to them the Holy Family whispers “Do not be afraid”. Know hope. Know trust. Know that you are not alone.

Finally, they are the patrons of the unexpected. It’s safe to say that Mary and Joseph had very different plans for their lives—plans that didn’t include visits from angels; a birth in a stable; a flight into Egypt; and a son standing trial and undergoing a brutal and humiliating public execution. When they became betrothed, they didn’t foresee their story unfolding this way. But God had a different story to tell. It is a story of “Do not be afraid” and “Let it be done to me according to your word”. Significantly, it is a story that ends in resurrection. The Holy Family can serve today as advocates of every family who sees life taking unexpected and sometimes alarming turns. They stand before us as models of faith, hope and trust—people who embraced all that in spite of everything they encountered.

Their journey was never easy. But that is true for all of us.And what is also true is that God is never outdone in mercy. His grace can help all of us bear the unbearable and endure the unendurable. That may be the greatest lesson we can learn from this family we call “Holy”. To all of us who wonder or worry, every parent who questions or doubts, this simple little family offers reassurance: Here is hope. May we work every day in the new year to make that story a part of our own.

CELEBRATE THE DATE OF OUR BAPTISM : Pope Francis was addressing the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Sunday Angelus immediately after having baptized 34 babies in the Sistine Chapel, an annual event that marks the feast day of Jesus’ Baptism in the River Jordan.

Reminding those present that today’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord concludes the time of Christmas, the Pope said it invites us to think about our own Baptism.

All Christians should take note of the date of their own BaptismHe conceded that it is impossible to actually remember that day, but he invited all believers to go home and find out that significant date in their lives because, he said, it is when the Father gave them the gift of the Spirit who “opens the eyes of the heart to truth”. Describing Jesus’ baptism as a manifestation of His humility and availability to immerse Himself in the river of humanity, the Pope explained that along the banks of the River Jordan, God kept his promise to take charge of the fate of human beings, and Jesus is the tangible and definitive sign. “God has taken charge of our fate” he said.

The gift of the Holy SpiritThe Pope said, “The Holy Spirit is the gift, the Father has given each of us on the day of our baptism”. The Spirit who transmits to us the tenderness of divine forgiveness and it is still the Holy Spirit, who causes the “revealing Word of the Father to resound”. Thus, Pope Francis said, the Feast of Jesus’ Baptism invites every Christian to remember his or her own baptism, because to forget it means to expose ourselves to the risk of losing our memory of what the Lord has done in us.

Thanks to our Baptism we are able to love and to forgiveThanks to our baptism, the Pope said, not only do we become new creatures “clothed with Christ”, but we are also able “to forgive and love those who offend us and do us harm; we are able to recognize in the lost and in the poor the face of the Lord who visits us and is close to us”. The Pope concluded his address expressing his joy at having just baptized some children and invoking upon them the protection of Our Lady “helped by the example of their parents and godparents” so they may grow up as disciples of the Lord.

Excerpts from the homily, preached by our Provincial, Fr. Praveen D’Souza, OFM on Christmas Eve.

The Birth of Jesus our savior is a prophecy fulfilled. From the time of Advent we have been reading and reflecting on the readings from the Prophet Isaiah. He is one of the favorite prophets for the Messiah. As the letter to the Hebrews would sum up much later, “God spoke through various means but when the time was fulfilled, He spoke through His only Son”. The coming of the Messiah, Saviour, the one who will save this world from its sinfulness, has been foretold long ago. Prophet Nathan in his prophecy to David, the King of Israel says that the “kingdom of David shall be established forever and that the Lord himself will build a household for David (2 Sam 7)”. Later, Prophet Isaiah would read the signs of the times and say “the people of darkness have seen a great light (Isa 9 : 1-7), the reading that we read for the midnight mass.

JESUS THE SAVIOUR IS BORN

This is the fulfillment of his own earlier prophecy “the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and will be named Immanuel, which means God with us (Isa 7).”. Today on this night of Christmas, this great Word of God spoken hundreds of years ago comes alive.

Adoration and humility are the attitudes that mark the celebration of the birth of the Saviour: The two attitudes that we can have today, on this feast day, are adoration and humility. This can be seen in the Church of the Nativity at Bethlehem. In the Basilica that was built for the first time in the 4th century and later a more majestic one in the 6th century, the side walls of the temple depict angels in loving adoration, bent over, towards the crib. This gesture tells us that the place of veneration of the Child Jesus, the messiah, the savior, is approached even by the angels from heaven in loving adoration. To adore the Lord who has come down in flesh and blood, in the form a humble babe.

The other attitude is of humility as depicted through the entrance to the majestic basilica. As we see in History, the continuous conquest by the Arabs, lead to the destruction of the temple. In order to prevent further plundering, the early Christians closed the majestic doors and instead made a small hole-like entrance where one needs to bend to enter, so as to block the conquerors, who rode into the temple with their horses, to loot and desecrated the place. The modified entrance still exists even to this day. Even the biggest VIP guests of the world need to enter through this little door. This tells us that the way to enter into the life of our Savior is one of humility. We need to bend on our knees and make our way to the ‘sublime humility’ of our Lord.

Let this night not be celebrated without a memory of the second Christ, Francis of Assisi who was ‘crazy for God’. It is he who began the tradition of the Crib. The biographer narrates

that St. Francis wished to recall the memory of the little child who was born in Bethlehem. He wanted to set before our bodily eyes the hardships of his infant needs, how he lay on the manger, how with an ox and ass, standing by, he lay upon the hay. It is said of Francis that while he was preaching about that silent and holy night of Christmas, addressed Jesus as the ‘babe of Bethlehem’ and whenever he uttered this word, he licked his lips and savored the sweetness of this great name. Francis was known as a ‘fool of Christ’. He was a little crazy for God. I too want to go a little crazy for God and perhaps on this night we all can go a little crazy for God. We too can call out the name, ‘babe of Bethlehem’ with all devotion and lick our lips and savor the moth watering experience of calling out the name of Jesus.

As we celebrate Christmas today let us take a look at the present situation in India and the World around us. We are celebrating this Christmas night with our own situations in life. God approached this world knowing very well the situation. He was born into our own situation. We offer this situation to our God today. We also read the signs of the times in our own country. There are concerted efforts in many parts of our country to disrupt the celebration, the worship of Christians. Some fringe groups are even persecuting Christians and making lives miserable and hard to live. Faith becomes a daily challenge. Sometime we even wonder if the people who govern us are involved as well. We wish to tell them and the entire nation, that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. No one can take this away from us, despite all the persecution. Jesus is supreme! He lives forever! He is not an option but a need for our world today. His policies, his attitudes, his teachings and his life are so much in need today, than it ever was. Many kingdoms have come and gone, many governments have come and gone but the Kingdom of God, established through Jesus, a kingdom of love, peace, forgiveness of sins

Jesus Youth Bangalore

As Catholics the concept of “Growth Retreat” is not outlandish to us. Ever since our first “Christ encounter”, we keep hankering for that next intense Christ experience. So as the journey with Jesus and growing closer to Him in love goes on, we get glimpses of those ecstatic revelations and heavenly bliss that He gives us during our personal time with Him. This may be during times of personal prayer, Holy Mass, confession, sacred reading, and retreats. Such was the growth retreat CHARISM 2017 hosted by Jesus Youth Bangalore for those seeking to know the Lord even better and passionate about taking His gospel far and wide and building His Church.

The retreat was conducted by eminent international preacher Br. Thomas Paul, a person who is well known around the world for his anointed reflections and retreats on the Holy Spirit and its charisms. The whole idea of CHARISM 2017 was to unleash the charismatic gifts (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) which are received during the sacraments of initiation, particularly Confirmation, when each one of us are anointed with power from high by the Holy Spirit, the giver of these gifts.

CHARISM 2017 spanned 33 days (7th November 2017 – 11th December 2017). Beginning with 30 days of preparation and theoretical teachings on the person of the Holy Spirit and culminating in 3 days of residential retreat where more practical aspects of how to use the charismatic gifts were taught.

Finally the 30 days of online preparation culminated into 3 days of residential retreat during the early chilly weekends of December 2017. All the participants gathered in the serene and idyllic campus of Carmelaram Theology College, Bangalore together with Br. Thomas Paul. The residential retreat focused mainly on practical workshops on how to put the charisms to use, as most of the theoretical talks were done. During these three days the participants were taught how to use the gift of tongues, gift of visions, gift of interpretation, gift of prophesy, gift of healing, and gift of intercession. Through these small workshops all the participants were immersed body and spirit in the power of the Holy Spirit, many were surprised to know such power remained dormant within them for so many years.

Feel like you missed something great? Be not disheartened, the entire CHARISM 2017 retreat has been uploaded in Br. Thomas Paul’s YouTube channel – https://goo.gl/uwHDij

For those interested in serious and deep study of the Holy Spirit, the list of talks by Pope St. John Paul II on the Holy Spirit can be found at – https://goo.gl/eKKDD2
