Editorial: Fuel Cell 3/2005

Editorial This issue of ªFuel Cells ± From Fundamentals to Systemsº is the second of a two part Topical Issue on Polymer Mem- branes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. That interest was such that the initially programmed single issue was ultimately split into two reflects the tremendous acceleration in research devoted to polymer membranes over the past decade or so. As the technical targets have become more and more focussed, it has become likely that different types of membranes will be associated with each type of application ± portable devices, automotive application, stationary power generation. The principle challenge of recent years has been to develop membranes and membrane-electrode assemblies allowing an increase in temperature of operation. For automotive use in particular, the additional, even more difficult task, of developing membranes with adequate proton con- duction properties even under conditions of very low relative humidity and under severe (electric load and temperature) cycling, sets further constraints and requires advanced mate- rials design. Future research will certainly provide viable options for membranes operating under these almost anhy- drous conditions, where the choice of the protogenic function is determinant. This topic is addressed in one of the articles of this Issue. The other original research and review articles in this second part of the Topical Issue cover a range of membrane types: non-fluorinated, partially or perfluorinated membranes, composite and reinforced membranes associating a sulfonated polymer with inorganic proton conductors, or with other polymers, in interpenetrating networks or multi- layer arrangements. I would like once again to most warmly thank the authors for their excellent collaboration over these past months, and reiterate also my gratitude to the ever-dependable Editorial Office and my thanks to the Editor-in-Chief.
