Villa Service to Student Award. Panel: The First Few Years Out Jennifer Gruenke, Class of 2014Oneofthemanypanelsofferedatthisyear’sCommunicationCareerDayaddressedgraduates’firstfewyearsintheworkingworld.Thepanelconsistedoffiverecentgrads:TamaraFord(Classof2012),AllysonGuatno(Classof2011),DebbiShibuya(Classof2011),StefanaSimonetto(Classof2012),andKatieLieberknecht(Classof2011).

Makingconnectionswithprofessorsandpeers,learninghowtomanagerelationships,puttingyourselfoutthere,andbeingateamplayerareafewofthelessonsthatthepanelistslearnedwhileatUCSB.Theyalsospokeaboutthesignificanceofgoingtheextramileandlifeatwork.“Staylate,showupearlyandoffertodoanyandallprojectsthatlandinfrontofyou.Also,makefriendswitheveryone.Anemployerwillnoticeifyou’rekindtothereceptionist,nottomentionthereceptionistmayhavecontactsinhighplaces.”Theyemphasizedtheimportanceofremainingpositiveandkeepingasmileonyourface,notonlyduringinterviews,butalsoonroughdaysafterlandingthejob.Theirmaintakehomemessagewasthis:attitudeiseverything.

Thepanelistsmentionedtheimportanceofreadingaboutthecompanyofinterestandfollowingtheminthenews.Havingapositiveattitudeandbeingknowledgeableaboutthe company will help you to stand out positively in an interview,onceyou’vewowedthemwithyourrésumé,ofcourse.

Panel: The Entertainment Industry Jennifer Gruenke, Class of 2014CommunicationCareerDayhostedanentertainmentpanel,whichfeaturedthreeCommalumni:JessicaBrandin(Classof2011),whoworksforFoxSportsasaproductionassistant,JustinBowler(Classof1996),whoisaprofessionalhostandactor,andLauraRoenick(Classof2005),whohelpshireandtrainassistantsatUnitedTalentAgency.

Thepanelistsspokeabouthowtheyattaineddifferent,butequallyvaluableexperiencesasCommunicationmajorsatUCSB.AccordingtoJessica,theinterpersonalCommclasseswerebestforherpersonalgrowth,helpingtobringheroutofhershell.Justin,ontheotherhand,foundthatthesinglemost important thing he learned as a Comm major was how to applyabusinessperspectivetohistalents.

Thepanelistsemphasizedthatinternshipsareinvaluabletomakingyourwayintotheentertainmentindustry.Jessica’sfirstjobwasaninternshipwithDirectTV,whileJustininternedforalocalSantaBarbaraproductioncompany,andLaurainternedwithUnitedTalentAgency.Internshipscanbeattainedthroughnetworking,offeringyourservicestoeveryone,whetherornottheyask.

Thepanelists’biggestpieceofadvicewastoreadanythingandeverything:readasmuchasyoucanaboutyourinterests,sothatyoucantalkaboutthemintelligentlyandeloquently,andtokeepuponcurrentevents.Theyalsourgedthestudentstobecreative:useyourdowntimetogetyourcreativejuicesflowing.Tacklethatprojectyou’vebeenthinkingabout.Ifyouwanttomakeamovie,startfilmingandifyouwanttopenanovel,startwriting.Youneverknowthegreatopportunitiesthattheseventurescanleadto.

Alumni have gone through exactly what you are going through rightnow,andunderstandthetypeofguidanceyouneedinthinkingaboutfuturecareerpaths.Talkingtoalumnicanevenhelpgetyourfootinthedoorofajobopportunity!

2. Building a career does not mean landing your dream job immediately.Forallofyoustressingaboutlifeaftergraduation,rememberthatbuildingacareertypicallytakesmorethanonejob.

3. Take advantage of the resources on campus.Wiseprofessorswithweeklyofficehours,CareerServices,andcommunityeventstargetedatcareerbuildingandnetworkingwillonlybeavailabletoyouwhileyouarestillatUCSB,somake sure you take advantage of the resources that are at your disposal as students!

4. Clean up your social media.Most,ifnotall,alumniatCareerDaymentionedsocialmediasites,likeLinkedIn,asthebestwaytogetintouchwithalumniandconnectwithpossiblejobopportunities.Thismeansthatpotentialemployersarelookingatyoursocialmedia,sokeepthoseredcupsoutofsight,cleanupyourlanguage,andthinktwiceaboutpotentialviewersofyourdifferentprofiles.

5. Confidence is key.Whetheryouareapproachingalumni,applyingforajob,ortakingonachallengingtask,donotmissoutonopportunitiesbecauseyoufeelintimidated!Remember:Skillscanbelearnedonthejobandgoingaboveandbeyondoftenmeanstakingrisks.

JustinBowlercallshimselffirstandforemostanactorbecauseactingishisfirstlove,butheisalsoaprofessionalhost.Asahost,hespeaksaboutproductsoninfomercialsandcommercials.CompaniessuchasColgate,Biogen,and Volkswagen have hired him to do nationalcampaigns.Healsovolunteerstohostcharityeventsbecause,likeanathlete,helikesto“keephismusclesstretched.”

Aftergraduatingin1996withadoublemajorinTheaterandCommunication,JustinsentoutletterstothreeSantaBarbaraproductioncompanies,offeringhisservices.Hisself-starterattitudeearnedhimajobasaninternfortheJamesStanfieldCompany,alocalproductioncompany.Oneofhismostnotableprojectswasmakingashortfilmcalled“Touch.”Accordingtothefilm’swebsite:“Touchtellstheemotionalaccount of two distressed souls who come together and experience,throughhumancontact,howhealingbegins.”ThefilmqualifiedforanAcademyAwardwhenitmadeitintothetop50oftheshortfilmcategory.“Mymotivationwas,IwanttobenominatedforanAcademyAwardforBestShortFilm.”

Asatheatermajor,Justindidnotknowmuchaboutbusiness.JustinsaysthatheowesmuchofhissuccesstoCommunicationprofessorDaveSeibold,whotaughthimhowtotakeabusinesspointofviewandapplythattohistalents.

Althoughheenjoysbeingahost,Justinisstillactivelypursuinghisdreamofbecomingafull-timeactor.Hesays,“IwanttobeTomHanks.Untilthen,I’llmakealivingtalkingabouttoothpaste.”

Alumni Profile: Cindy Andrade(Class of 2007) Mariana Davis, Class of 2013

CindyAndradesharedwithUCSBstudentssomeofhermotivations,achievements,regrets,andmostvaluabletipsabouthercareerasaself-employedentrepreneur.

Aftergraduation,Cindybeganherprofessional career as a logistics coordinator.Afterherfatherpassedaway,Cindyrealizedhowimportantmemorieswereinkeepingsomeonealive,

evenaftertheyleavethephysicalworld.Inspired,Cindydecidedtoleaveherbehind-the-deskjobandpursueacareerpathaboutwhichshewaspassionate.In2011,Cindystartedherowneventplanningbusiness,

CelebrationsbyCindy,whereshecreatesmemorableeventsthatfamiliescanrememberforeternity.Sofar,herbusinessisexpanding,andshelovesherwork.

Cindyurgesyoungentrepreneurstouse“wordofmouth”astheirnumberonemarketingstrategy.Cindyalsoencouragesentrepreneurstofindawaytodifferentiatetheirproductsfromthoseofthecompetition.Forexample,althoughmanynew smart phone apps allow people to plan their own events,Cindyremindspeoplethatanappwillnottakeintoconsiderationtheirpersonalstories,familydynamics,ethnicity,orreligioninhelpingtoplananevent.

WhileatUCSB,Cindylearnedtodividehertimewiselybetweenschool,friends,andfamily.Cindyurgescurrentstudentstousetheresourcesthatareofferedoncampus.Shealsorecommendsfindingapersonwhocanbecomeyour“careermentor”andwillprovidehonestfeedback.Lastly,Cindyencouragesstudentstoreachaboveandbeyondpeople’sexpectations.

Most undergrads understand the advantages of networking withalumnibutwhereandhowshouldweapproachUCSBalumni? A few alumni from Career Day gave students some suggestions.

Social media and community events.Theimportanceofnetworkingisclear,buthowdoyoubegintobuildrelationshipsifyoudonotknowanyoneinyourfieldofinterest?MattSchermerhorn(Classof2009)suggestsusingresourcessuchasLinkedIn,orotheronlinewebsitesdesignedtofacilitatelocalmeetups.Besideslookingforalumniontheweb,attendingandassistingwitheventssuchasCareerDayisagreatopportunitytonetworkaswell.

Questions, Questions, Questions!Askalotofquestionstoget“nuggetsofwisdom.”Beforemeetingup,lookoveryourrésuméandthinkabouttopicsonwhichyoumightneedadvice.TinaBenevento(Classof2007)encouragesstudentstorememberthatnetworkingisa“giveandtake”deal,andalumniarelookingto“take”therewardingfeelingofbeingconnectedtotheircommunityandtheiralmamater.Todoyourpart,besuretofollowupwiththemaboutyourprogress.

Talk to recent graduates.K.C.Ellis(Classof2003)saysthatolderalumniaregreatsourcesofinformation,butstudentsshouldalsotrytofindalumniwhohavejustgonethroughsimilarstagesoflife.Theywillbeknowledgeableaboutthecurrentjobmarket.

Do not make it about the job hunt. Alumni are ready to helpyouunderstandtheobstaclesandadvantagesofdifferentcareerpaths,butStefanaSimonetto(Classof2012)recommendsthatstudentsavoidaggressivelyaskingthem toconnect you to someone in your desired industry or company.

Myfavoriteclasswasthegraduatetheoryseminar,taughtatthetimebyDr.JimBradacandDr.JohnWiemann.Johnwouldengageusinarobustdiscussionaboutthereadings,whileJimwouldcarefullyobservethedialogue.HisALShadprogressedtothepointthathereliedoneyemovementtoentertextintohiscommunicator.So,aftersometimeofdiscussion,Jim’stext-to-speechvoicewould“chimein”andcompletelyturntheconversation—andourassumptions—ontheirheads.Itwasanamazingandinvigoratingenvironment.—AaronCastelanCarglie,PhD1996

My favorite Communication professor was Professor Dale Kunkel andhiscoursesregardingtelevisionviolenceandchildren.Thinkingback,mycoursesininterpersonalcommunicationgavemeadeeperunderstandingofpeopleandhowwecommunicate,whichhasbeenhelpfulforallrelationshipsinmylife—professionalaswellaspersonal.Havingstrongcommunicationskillsisespeciallyvaluableasalawyerwhentalkingwithclients,workingwithcolleagues,appearingincourt,andasIworkwithlawstudents.—LauraCohen,BA1988

Professor Charles Mullin teaches Communication145,MediaEntertainment,acoursethat“blendssocialscientificandhumanisticapproachestoaddress a wide range of issues concerning theappreciation,use,understanding,andfunctionsofentertainmentmedia.”Weeklytopicsrangefromentertainmentproduction industry trends and economics tofandomandsubculturediscussions.

ProfessorMullincommentsonthevalueoftheclass,“Welive in an exciting era with respect to entertainment media becausenewtechnologiesofthelastdecadeorsohavesignificantlyredefinedthemedia/audiencerelationship,andfundamentallyalteredthebasicprofitseekingmodelsoftheentertainmentindustries.

“OnethingthatIfindparticularlygratifyingaboutthisclassisthatthestudentsseembeabletorelatetomostofthethemesandconceptsintheclass,because,afterall,thisistheirworld.Itseemstomethat,comparedtoothercourses,students in Media Entertainment are more willing to discuss topicsandvolunteerideasinclass,presumablybecausetheyfeelthattheyhaveabetterpersonalframeofreferenceforthematerialthatwecoverinthiscourse.”

Professor Dana Mastro teaches Communication103:Media,Race,andEthnicity.Thecourseaddresses“theevolutionofmediaimagesofrace/ethnicityinentertainmenttelevision,film,news,sports,advertising,andvideogames,including discussions on the social conditions leading to shifts in these portrayals.”Theethnicminoritygroups discussed in the class include

NativeAmericans,LatinoAmericans,BlackAmericans,AsianAmericans,andArabAmericans/MiddleEasternAmericans.ProfessorMastrosaysthatsheenjoysteachingthiscourseformanyreasons,butthemainoneisthattheclass offers a great opportunity to speak with students aboutthedifferentportrayalsofethnic/racialgroupsinthemedia.Sheexplains,“Often,wedon’tgivethisissuemuchconsiderationasweenjoyourfavoriteTVshow,watchamovie,orreadthepaper.Buttherearesystematicwaysthatdifferentgroupsarecharacterizedandthesehaveimportantimplicationsforaudiences(bothnegativeandpositive).Inthisclass,wegettoexplorealloftheseissues.”

Staff Profile: Tricia TaylorMariana Davis, Class of 2013

TriciaTaylor,GraduateProgramAssistantforUCSB’sCommunicationDepartment,isdrivenbyherpassionforthefield,students,andstaff.Herroleinthedepartmentisto help graduate students manage the administrative aspect of their education.Oneofhertasksinvolvesreviewing admission applications and setting up recruitment weekendforprospectivestudents.Asecondelementofherjobishelpinggraduatestudentsfindfundingsuchasgrantsandfellowships.Oneofhermostimportanttasksishelpinggraduatestudentsthroughtheprocessoffilinganddefendingtheirdissertation,inclosecollaborationwiththegraduateadvisor.

Triciafulfillsherjobinaverypersonalway.Sheknowsthebackgrounds,stories,andsituationsofthedepartment’sfortygraduatestudents,whichcanhelphertobeastrongadvocate.“Iaminaweofallthatourstudentsdo,andIvicariouslylivethroughtheiraccomplishments,”Triciasaid.Aftertalkingtoherforjustafewminutes,hergenuine dedication to the students and commitment to the departmentareobvious.Triciadidnotfailtomentionheradmirationforthestaffofthedepartmentwhenshesaid,“Ilovethestaffandfaculty.Wehavesuchacohesiveteam.Idon’teventhinkofitaswork.Ijustloveit!”

Behindallherdutiesandrelationshipsinthedepartmentliesastrongpassionforthefieldofcommunication.Toallcommunicationmajorsinsearchofinspiration,Triciasays,“Ithinkcommunicationisthebaseofallinteractionswithpeople.Itisthecoreofliving.Ifyoumastercommunication,youcansucceedinanything!”
