BUZZ is a newsletter

especially for the young

men and women of

The Junction Works’

disability services.

A History of the Movies

Did you know that the word ‘movies’ is short for

Motion Picture? Motion means movement. So

‘movies’ are moving pictures.

Motion Pictures became possible with the invention of the

motion picture camera in 1895 (that’s 120 years ago).

The movie projector was invented a few years later.

This enabled the development of the cinema or

movie theatre, where lots of people could watch a

movie at the same time.

The first cinema opened in the United

States in 1905. It was called The

Nickelodeon (like the kids’ Pay TV

channel).

In the beginning movies were ‘silent’.

There was no way of recording voices.

Words on screen cards helped the

audience follow the story. And music was

played to set the mood for the audience.

The most famous silent movie star was Charlie

Chaplin.

The first movie with recorded voices was The

Jazz Singer released in 1927 (that’s only 88 years ago). People called

these movies the ‘talkies’.

The talkies mark ‘The Golden Age of Hollywood’ from the 1930s to

the 1950s during which American cinema reached its peak of

glamour and global appeal.

Before there were celebrities there were ‘Movies Stars’ like… .

Clark Gable, Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart and Greta Garbo

The greatest box office draw

of the 1930s was Shirley

Temple. At 4 years old she

could sing, act, dance and

charm your socks off with her

confidence.

And then of course, there

was the tragic Marilyn

Munro, one of the last of the sirens of Hollywood’s

Golden Age.

Edmon’s Brief…

I’m finally back in Australia

from the Philippines. I had a

good time there and I was the

Best Man at my cousin’s

wedding. I love the

Philippines. That’s my country.

I’m very excited about my

Grandma coming back to

Australia this Saturday.

On another subject, the NRL is

back for 2015. The Eels will be

hard to beat this year. We will

smash every team.

That’s my article for The BUZZ

open our new Vitality House at

Wetherill Park on 23 February.

While he was there the Minister

shot some hoops with Dion, Sarah

and Shae.
