    The First Imported Oranges

    by Harry Mather

Oranges are a very old type of fruit. They originally

came from China but they were not introduced into

Europe for a long time when the Romans imported

them. The Arabs from North Africa re-introduced

oranges into Europe in the 8th  century when they

    conquered Spain and Portugal.

Some of the first Englishmen to eat oranges were

soldiers who fought in the Crusades with King

Richard the Lionheart in 1192. Citrus fruit first cameto England when Queen Eleanor ordered fruit from

Spain which included oranges, lemons and dried

fruits. This type of fruit was very expensive, so only

rich people could afford to buy it.

Rich people in the 16th  century attempted to grow

orange trees in northern Europe by building

greenhouses called orangeries. At this time, for

ordinary people, oranges were a special treat so if

you got an orange, you were very lucky.

In the 19th century, because of transportation being

improved, oranges became less expensive and were

imported to northern Europe in greater numbers as

they were grown more widely in southern Europe

and the Mediterranean. Oranges are now imported

from all over the world, from countries such as

     America, Brazil, Morocco and Spain.

    Editor-in-Chief’s Comment

HELLO!!! good readers of the world’s best paper

(well…probably). So this week’s theme is a hard one

to get your head around, but I think it is quite a fun

one too. ORANGE. Yep, that’s right, orange! It’s a

great theme as you will read about anything and

everything that is orange! So sit back, relax and eat

an orange, if you want to!! But make sure to enjoy

    newspaper (well…probably!)

    Let's Concentrate on Orange Juice

    By Jeanne Véron

Eighty-five per cent of all oranges produced in the world

are used for juice. It is made by squeezing the fresh

orange. Fresh orange juice is the richest source of vitamin

C and fulfils an entire day's worth of vitamin C in just one

serving. Vitamin C is the key ingredient for healthy bones,

skin, ligaments, tendons and blood vessels.

In the mid 1910s there was an overproduction of citrus

fruit in California. It used the crop for juicing; the juice

would only last for a day and start to rot! Fresh orange

juice needs to be kept in the fridge. Fridges had not been

    invented yet!

Brazil makes more than half of the world's orange juice.

In the UK, each one of us drinks 13 litres each year. The

problem is sugar! If we drink too much juice, we can

damage our teeth. The healthiest orange juice is the one

    we make ourselves!

Juice world record: longest time gargling orange juice:

20.91 seconds. Jacob Santiago from the USA drank a full

pouch of Capri Sun in 4.28 seconds! Speed drinking can

be extremely dangerous, please do not attempt this

record. Time for a joke: Why was the girl staring at the

    carton of orange juice?

    Answer: it said CONCENTRATE!

For this week’s theme, I made a delicious orange

cake that is so easy to make. I call it the …

    QUICK & EASY ORANGE CAKE

    by Ben Jacobi

    You will need:-

    4 eggs

    1½ cups sugar

    ½ cup vegetable oil

    2 cups self raising flour

    2 teaspoons baking powder

    ½

    teaspoon salt

    ½ cup fresh orange juice

2 tablespoons orange zest, from 1- 2 oranges

    1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Beat together the eggs and sugar until thick.

    Slowly mix in the oil.

Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt, and

then the orange juice. Beat until smooth, and

then mix in the zest and vanilla.

Pour the batter into a greased baking tray, and

bake for about 40 minutes, or until the cake is

    done.

Let the cake cool in the tray for about 10

minutes, then turn out onto a rack to finish

    cooling. Slice & serve! Yummy!

Here’s another tasty morsel drawn by Harry

Bloomfield – it is, of course, the gingerbread man

who ran away from his parents who loved him

and got eaten by a hungry and cunning fellow

ginger friend - the fox! We think this picture was

    taken in happier times!

This beautiful sculpture of children singing and playing to

the tune of Oranges and Lemons can be seen at Ramsnest

    Common in Surrey.

It is a bronze and it was made by Christine Charlesworth.

The photograph was taken by Colin Smith.

    Orangutans

    by Elodie Preston

The orangutans are the Asian species of great apes.

Like the other great apes, orangutans are highly

intelligent. Orangutans share round about 97% of

their DNA with humans. Its common name is based

on two separate local words, “orang” (“people” or

“person”) and “hutan” (forest), and translates as

‘man of the forest’. Orangutans live in Indonesia and

Malaysia in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra.

Orangutans were once thought to be one species.

Since 1996, they have been divided into two species:

the Bornean orangutans and the Sumatran

    orangutans.

The Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) is an

endangered species, because of deforestation, palm

oil plantation and hunting. There are estimated to be

between 45000 and 69000 alive today.

The Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) is found only

on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It is rarer than

the Bornean orangutan with only 7500 in existence.

These orangutans almost never travel on theground, preferring to move around in the trees.

Elodie was helped by the World Wildlife Fund and

Wikipedia when she wrote this article.

    Georgina’s Pointless Points

    Why are Oranges Named

     After Their Colour?

    by Georgina Loring

Oranges are part of the citrus family and

their scientific name is Citrus Sinensis but

why is their common name named after

    their colour? A banana isn’t called a

yellow and a strawberry isn’t a red, so

why is an orange called an orange?

It turns out that an orange isn’t the onlyfruit named after its colour! For instance,

    there are blueberries and blackberries,

but they are called that because they are

berries that are blue and black, it isn’t as

bad as calling them blues and blacks!

There is an amazing answer to my

question! An orange isn’t  named after its

colour, the colour orange was actuallynamed after the fruit! The colour orange

used to be called  geolhread which

translates to yellow-red! The fruit name

was from the Spanish for orange which is

    naranja  (pronounced na-ring-a) which

came from came from the Sanskrit

nāranga  which meant orange tree. The

English dropped the n and it evolved into

    orange.

I hope that you now know something that

    you didn’t know before!

    Japanese Spider Crab

    by Isabel Browning

The Japanese Spider is the largest anthropod. Ithas a leg span of up to 3.8 metres; its body cangrow up to 40 cm and it can weigh up to 19kilograms!

The Japanese Spider Crab is, of course, foundmostly on an island on the southern coast ofJapan called Honshu. Adults can be found at

depths between 50 and 600 metres.

The crab’s colouring is much like normal crabs, orange with white spots.

The Japanese Spider Crab is occasionallycollected for food and in some parts of Japan it isconsidered a delicacy.

In 1976, a total of 24.7 tons of this crab wascollected but in 1985, only 3.2 tons. These crabshave been known to do some damage so Iwouldn’t get on the wrong side of one!

These crabs are gentle giants. They can be asbig as a mini and live to one hundred years old.

They eat shellfish and dead animal carcasses.

If you want to see a Spider Crab in action, thentake a look at the video clips on Youtube!

I love cats, at home I have two of the loveliest

cats that I could ever wish for - Biscuit and

Muddle! Biscuit is a ginger tom cat which is why

I decided to do this topic on ginger cats (arethey rare now? Are gingers mostly males?) and

the story of how I ended up with two cats

    instead of just one.

I know five people all of whom have male ginger

cats. Is it true that you can only get male ginger

cats or is that a rumour? I have been

researching ginger cats and people have said

that there are a few female ginger cats around

but they are extremely rare but more to the

point a few weeks ago when I took my Biscuit to

the vets for a check-up the vet said that you

don’t find many ginger cats (not just females)

around which I was really shocked to hear. But

I’m proud of having a ginger cat in the family!

When I was about two and a half I had a black

cat called Trixie. I loved her dearly, but

unfortunately when I was 5 she died. I was

really sad to see her go and I really wanted

another cat .One day when I was walking

from school with my child minder we saw a

note in a shop window which read KITTENS FOR

SALE. I was soooooo excited, so when I got

home I told my mum about the advertisement

and the next week we were walking to the

house where the kittens were! I really wanted a

ginger cat. I had planned it all out. I was going

to call him Biscuit! So we walked in and there

they were - all five kittens meowing at me and

my mum. I sat on the cold floor stroking my

soon-to-be-mine cat and my mum knelt down

on the floor beside me. Suddenly my mum

made a small shriek of surprise as a small tabby

cat jumped on to her back. He climbed all the

way to my mum’s head just like in The LionKing. So we decided to get two cats instead of

    one!

The Orange A Story by Hannah Williams

Once there was a man called Kensuke and he had been marooned on a desert island formonths after a shipwreck. He was desperately trying to find a way to get off the island and

return home, but so far had no idea how he was going to manage this.

One day he noticed a box that had washed up on the beach. He ran down to see what it

contained and after trying for some time he managed to open it. Excitedly he looked in, but to

his dismay, all he found was peelings from various fruits. He desperately put his hands in all

four corners of the box (he wasn’t sure what he was looking for, apart from maybe something

fresh to eat) and he felt three hard pips. He wasn’t sure what fruit they came from but decided

to plant them to see if they could grow. He found three different spots on the island and looked

after them in the hope that they would grow and provide him with some kind of fruit.

Two of the pips didn’t grow but one did and Kensuke spent his days looking after it, watering it

and covering it with palm leaves when it got too hot in the sun. The plant grew and began to

flower and after some time Kensuke saw it had grown a healthy looking orange. Carefully he

picked it, peeled it and ate it slowly while looking out at the empty sea – it was delicious!

Although he enjoyed eating the juicy orange, it made him feel even more homesick and

determined to find a way to return home. He took the pips from that orange and planted them

near the same spot so they would grow too. As he looked after his plants and ate the oranges

they produced, he saved all the peelings and eventually had enough to spell out ‘HELP ME’ invery big letters across the top of a hill on the island, hoping that one day someone would see it

    and rescue him.

One morning he was woken up by the sound of a helicopter overhead and to his delight

realised his message had been seen. Just before taking off with his rescuers, he asked them to

wait and ran to the orange plant which he carefully dug up to carry home with him, since it had

been the only living thing he had cared about all the months he had been marooned on the

island. He left the other plants just in case someone else ever found themselves in the same

    situation.

Kensuke felt very lucky to have made it home, and he lived in peace and happiness and cared

for the orange plant for as long as he lived.

Hannah says a big thank you to Ms Case for providing the inspiration for this story and to

Michael Morpurgo for supplying the name of our shipwrecked hero!

Kensuke’s Kingdom  by Michael Morpurgo is a great book which you might be interested in

reading. You can find it in the library.

    Orange Juiceby Angus Duncan

We all like orange juice but do we know what is in it?

What does orange juicedo for your body?

    Orange juice has lots of benefits.These include;

    - Boosting the immune system

    - Reducing signs of ageing

    - Protecting from cancer

    - Improving blood pressure

Orange juice, as you know, is made out of a citrusfruit called orange. Oranges are squeezed andturned in to juice. Lastly they pack up the juice intocontainers and they go to shops around the world.Try not to drink frozen, canned or concentratebecause some add additional chemicals, sugar andget rid of some of the goodness. Tropicana is a big

    culprit of doing this.

Orange juice has been around for 4500 years

    Fact

This is a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller of King William III, who was

also known as : William of Orange! You might be interested to know

why that was the case. William of Orange lived from 1650 to 1702.

He inherited the title of William of Orange from his father, William II, who

dies a week before he was born. The House of Orange was created

when Henry III of Nassau-Breda from Germany and Claudia of Châlon-

Orange from French Burgundy were married in 1515.

William of Orange was a Stadtholder which means he ruled over the

republics of : Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel in

the Dutch Republic from 1672. He also became King of  England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until his death at the age of

One day you might see people dressed all in orange robes likethese. These people are followers of Hare Krishna. Krishna istheir Supreme and he represents happiness and harmony.People who follow Krishna believe Krishna has a divine (god-given) energy which they want to share. Just as the sun shineson us through its energies like heat and light, the Supremereveals Himself through His many energies. If the Supreme isthe source of everything, then whatever you can see--and even

what you can’t see-- belongs to the energy of the Supreme. When followers of Hare Krishnna place themselves in harmonywith Krishna and Krishna's energy, they believe they return to

theirr natural, pure state of consciousness. This is what theycall "Krishna consciousness." The followers of Krishna have amantra which they chant. You can see their happiness in thisimage.

     Archie’s Great Experiment

    by Archie West

Archie had fun this week with a little experiment to find the sweet which tasted most like an orange.

After school Mum took us to Olveston stores where I had to find all the sweets with an orange flavour. After

spending £6.67 on sweets (yes, mum paid!) we emptied all the packets to sort the orange sweets from the rest.

Toby then piled them up and we were ready to start our challenge! I decided to get a fair test we should

blindfold each other & mark them out of 10 on how orange they tasted. My little brother LOVES oranges and

I HATE them so this was interesting. I was surprised that I only scored 5 for wine gums & I was very surprised jelly

    tots were only 1.

    You decide – what’s your favourite……

First Archie (or Archie’s mum) bought lots of

packets of sweets – poor Archie (or poor Archie’s

    mum!!)

Next he had to take out just the orange sweets

and he had to eat all of the others, so they weren’t

    all wasted – poor Archie!

Then, he emptied them into little pots.

    So, which orange sweet

    does taste most like the

    fruit?
