The whole school has come together over the past week and caught up with a lot of fun, which we have been missing. As always, I’m hugely indebted to our staff who have made all things possible: the Day of Sport, The Swimming Gala, The Local History trips, The Computing Trip to QMC, the G7 Summit and today the Year 11 Prom, Whole school Assembly, the Opening of the Laura Saunders Reading Room. And it’s not just the staff who come up with the ideas and plan these events, it’s the support they get from colleagues in the background, who make all of this happen safely. Can I mention our fabulous team of cleaners at Cranbourne. This team, led by Uma has kept the school absolutely spotless and hygienic over the year. We owe them so much! Please enjoy reading about our fantastic children in today’s edition of the Cranbourne Catch Up. You may be aware of updated advice from the Government on Testing from September. We will be testing all students twice, once before return and a second time in the first week back, before handing back the testing to you at home. You will be receiving emails and text messages with links to information, privacy notice and consent forms (new Year 7 only), so do keep looking. Looking back on the year, we have had together, I think we have done an amazing job, you and us together, to keep our children healthy, happy and in school learning. So take a break now and we’ll be back together to do it all again in September!

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hardly know where to start with my update this week.

Their attention to detail and organisation is key. We finish our term with a presentation to “Unsung Heroes”. These are wards for members of staff, who just keep us all safe and happy. Can I mention our fabulous team of cleaners at Cranbourne. This team, led by Uma has kept the school absolutely spotless and

hygienic over the year. We owe them so much!

Please enjoy reading about our fantastic children in today’s edition of the Cranbourne Catch Up.

Libbie French – Hampshire Athletics Championships

Congratulations to Libbie French who represented Basingstoke for the last time as a Cranbourne Student at the Hampshire Athletics Championships on 12th June at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.Libbie competed in the 200m and jumped over 10 metres in the Triple Jump to finish 2nd in the competition!

Libbie over her time at Cranbourne has shown herself to be a fantastic all-rounder, but is a keen member of Basingstoke Athletics Club. During her time at Cranbourne she has won the District Athletics events in the Long Jump, Triple Jump and 200m! I’d like to congratulate her for her most recent achievements but also celebrate all her efforts for Cranbourne over the past five years. Well done Libbie and good luck for your future sporting endeavors!

Charity Walk

On 10th July, Mr Roberts (PE) is attempting a 100 mile walking challenge in 2 days raising money for Cancer Research UK. The walk is on the South Downs Way which runs from Winchester to Eastbourne and has around 4,000m in elevation along the way! You can find the story as to why he is attempting this challenge at www.justgiving.com/mattroberts2021. He will be documenting the walk on the Cranbourne PE Instagram page!

Day of Sport

After a two year wait we were delighted to run Day of Sport this Year along with COVID re-strictions of Year group bubbles. Our “Day of Sport” ironically runs over 3 days, with a Field Events Competition on Day 1, Swimming Gala on Day 2 and Team events and Athletics on Day 3.

Participation is key across all 3 days, with 12 points for every individual winner, 9 for second place, 8 for third and so on. If houses do not fill the spaces, they do not receive any points at all!

Field Events on Day 1 requires students to come out of their normal lessons and compete in High Jump, Long Jump, Javelin, Shot Put and Discus – they accumulate points for their house team with their performances.

In the Field Events competition – the house with the best overall score is awarded the tro-phy. In 2019 – the winners were White House, however 2021 bought a new winner which was Andrew Lloyd Webber House! The Year 8 and Year 10 Girls were the highest scoring year groups for Andrew Lloyd Webber and went a long way to securing them the trophy! Well done to everyone involved.

Swimming Gala on Day 2 saw really high participation which was fantastic – however, a few teams left some big gaps which made it hard for them to compete overall! Again, the 2019 winner were White House and the trophy for 2021 has changed hands once again. The winners were Lloyd Webber House making it a Field Events and Swimming Gala dou-ble! Big shout out to the Lloyd Webber Year 10s who fielded a completely full team of boys and girls for swimming (the only year group and house to do so!)

Day 3 bought incredible weather and a lovely atmosphere around school as students competed in Tug of War, Rounders, Football, Basketball and Athletics throughout the day. Each Year group competes for their own individual trophy and their points go towards the overall trophy at the end of the day.

The trophies were awarded to the following Houses:Year 7 – Austen

Year 8 – Andrew Lloyd WebberYear 9 - Andrew Lloyd Webber

Year 10 - Andrew Lloyd WebberOverall - Andrew Lloyd Webber

Wooden Spoon – ThomsonField Events - Andrew Lloyd Webber

Swimming Gala - Andrew Lloyd Webber

A massive performance from all students in Andrew Lloyd-Webber to take 6 out of the 7 tro-phies available in 2021! They’re definitely going to be the house to beat in 2022!

Chalk Ridge Sports Days – Leadership Support

Our fabulous Sports Leaders have been in action over the past few weeks assisting in the running of sports days. With their invaluable help, both the KS1 and KS2 events went off very smoothly and our students won high praise for their politeness, helpfulness, but most of all patience!

The PE dept and I would like to thank all of those involved for their hard work and effort on these days, they did Cranbourne proud!

QMC BTEC Leaders at Cranbourne

Over the summer term we have welcomed several groups from the local college with some familiar faces. This is for the purpose of the sixth form students delivering lessons that they have planned and practised, before experiencing the very real setting of a school environment and KS3 students.

During testing times owing to the weather and having to wear masks, both the Cranbourne and QMC students excelled in the activities and this joint venture was yet again a roaring success!

QMC Superstars

On 29th June, twelve of our very able sports students visited QMC to take part in the annual event, which is to find out who is the ‘best of the best’ in Basingstoke as an all-round sports person.

Firstly, we were 10/10 for organisation, having got the right date and time when other schools didn’t and we did not have isolation issues. This meant for an interesting and adapted competition and so by default we managed to top the charts in all divisions – well you have to be ‘in it to win it’ as they say!!

Results to note are as follows:

Girls Competition…

3rd Place: Amy R 2nd: Kelsie F 1st: Jess P

Boys Competition:

3rd Place: Alfie A 2nd: Hayden C 1st: Ellis P

Year 9’s have been learning about infancy and the development through the life stage, to help them with understanding the different areas of development students made some flour babies then completed an activities booklet looking at all the areas development required to look after and help a baby develop. They really enjoyed this task, by doing this it allowed them to underpin knowledge to help them progress.

Mrs Cripps’ Year 8 Spanish group tried their hand at baking some delicious Magdalena cakes.

These cakes are a quinessential part of Spanish cuisine and are often enjoyed as a tasty treat at breakfast time!

Don’t they look absolutely delicious! Great work Year 8!!!

Miss Whitehouse’s Year 7 classes have been looking at the work of British artist John Dyer and his Amazon Rainforest paintings. They have been inspired by his lively, vibrant and expressive painting that were painted when he and his daughter travelled to the Amazon Rainforest.

‘Year 7 students wanted to celebrate the beauty and life of the rainforest through their own artwork. Their work represents all the colour and vibrancy of the natural world that thrives in the rainforest and represents how important it is to maintain these types of forests. It reflects what a massive impact deforestation will have on the natural habitat of wildlife, trees, plants and flowers. Year 7 students have all created a series of artworks depicting, plants/foliage, flowers and rainforest wildlife. They have created their own collage rainforests artwork. They have observed the work of John Dyer, images and photography of the rainforest and worked in mixed media, in-cluding painting, wax resist, watercolour and mixed dry media.’

Don’t they look ab-solutely de-licious! Great work Year 8!!!

Do you know your musical ABC? Your ‘Abba’ from the ‘Beatles’ or a ‘Crotchet’ from a ‘Demi semi-quaver’? Don’t worry because you’ve come to the right place: Cranbourne School Mu-sic Department!

We are hoping to have a ‘symphonic’ musical year and there are all sorts of learning oppor-tunities for you at Cranbourne. We have instrumental tuition, extra-curricular music clubs, class music lessons, concerts, events and competitions. We know that students benefit hugely from musical learning in terms of team work, challenge, reward and well-being!

Our instrumental tuition is delivered by the Hampshire Music Service and students come out of their regular subject lesson to learn a musical instrument. This is a ‘paid for’ service and our most traditional way of learning to play music. Further details are available from our ‘Instrumental Lesson Form’.

Extra-curricular music clubs are free and also a great way to ‘dip your toe’ into music education! Next year we will be running several musical bands:

• Vocal Band - for vocalists and singers including a band for Y7/8:• Ukulele Band - for those wanting to start on one of the easiest to learn musical instruments;• Carnival Band - for percussion, brass & wind instrumentalists for those who are a little more assured on their musical instrument.

Concerts - we very much hope to be able to play concerts again. Concerts will include a variety of bands, singers and instrumentalists. We hope to run a Christmas and Summer Concert in the next academic year singing ‘Joyful, Joyful’ from the hit show Sister Act and Abba Songs from the hit show ‘Mamma Mia’.

In the spring we would like to offer a new competition to all musical students ‘Cranbourne Musician of the Year’ and are in talks about running a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition.

We do hope that you can get involved and have a go at learning your musical ABC!

Happy Musical Holidays!

This Half Term, Year 7 have been working with Historic England helping to uncover the history of our town, Bas-ingstoke. To do this they have worked like historians re-searching and writing short summaries to tell the story of different locations. They brought together their research to help create a “Walking History Tour of Basingstoke”. Over the last couple of weeks Year 7 students have had the opportunity to go out and experience their walk. It was a brilliant day for everyone involved and allowed students to gain a better understanding of their local area. The aim is to release our local history walk to the wider community in the next academic year.

Well Done to all Year 7 for their hard work in History this year!

Have a fantastic Summer

Mr Marshall-James

Cranbourne’s certificated award, ‘Role Model Students’. Each member of staff can nominate a student that shows amazing hard work and a positive attitude. Students nominated will receive a certificate sent home in the post.

Well done to everyone who has been awarded this week!
