Communication

Everybody needs something to make them unique.

Saying that Edithouse has experience from filming cars, is pretty far from exaggerating.

Fixed Camera, rigs are made of high-strengh aluminium and special Carbon Fibre material.

We have had it as our focus for

longer than we can remember. Or at

least since the 90’s. As a matter of

fact, we have produced thousands

of films in collaboration with the car

industry. Commercials and running

footage, as well as launch, instruction,

inspiration and information films.

Our films have been displayed on the

web, at retailers, in mobile phones,

in ipods, at motor shows ¬ in short,

everywhere films can be used. We’re

happy about all the prizes we’ve

been awarded over the years. most

important, though, is the fact that our

clients keep coming back. That is

somehow the ultimate evidence: our

work has had effect. When we try to

specify that work, it can be described

as below.

Global presence Taking on an assignment is easy. Taking it to the finish line is always a little bit less

easy, especially if it’s an intercontinental assignment. Edithouse has been filming

vehicles all over the globe, in places such as New Zealand, South Africa, the United

States of America, France, Italy, Switzerland and Norway. And Sweden, of course.

In order to film on location with secrecy, an almost military organization is required. Nothing

can fail. The chamber of commerce, customs, local production companies, local place find-

ers, local police, local facilities – there are certainly quite a few people and authorities involved

in achieving the results one has promised the client.

Edithouse always has the right equipment in relation to the assignment. We own all necessary equip-

ment. Except for the helicopter! We certainly have the know-how when it comes to filming the hero car

(which is our name for secret vehicles) from that helicopter. We own, for example, special equipment like

anti-shake rig, to be mounted onto the tracking vehicle. Lately, we have also invested in the newest film

technology – the RED camera. This allows us to film high-speed in HD, with fantastic results. Our clients

demand world-class films. Therefore, Edithouse has world-class equipment.

Technique under control

Edithouse are devoted to giving

the end customer a message with

one-voice, meaning all communica-

tion being consistent regardless of

the medium. There are films meant

for gigantic plasma displays at motor

shows. This calls for a different ap-

proach than a film displayed in a small

Flash window, where it can be a real

challenge to fit in a canoe rack. On

volvocars.com, there are some 6000

films produced by Edithouse.

Since film on the web is expanding by

200% annually, Edithouse has invest-

ed in knowledge about the web, more

specifically knowledge about the new,

social media.

The new film carriers

Film should build bridges between the assigner and the end customer. It’s necessary to be cost effective and to focus on the usefulness. Coordinations of scenes, models

and locations are important keys to being cost effective. When producing films, we optimize the production by filming for several different films at the same time. When

gathering the resources in the shape of actors and props on location, it’s economic to work along several parallel tracks. It could be an extra shooting, with a different nar-

rative technique. For example, we might shoot a scene for a commercial, and then immediately re-shoot it as an instructional scene.

Maximized use

Among the larger full-scale assignments Edithouse has caried

through, are the films on the Volvo XC60. We had a full-scale assign-

ment including project management of all the films, had the scripts

produced, and then coordinated these with different segment clients

at Volvo Cars (global marketing, exhibition, education, public relations,

the project etc). We produced storyboards that along with speaker

scripts were presented to all stakeholders and others involoved

(construction technicians, crash centers etc). We worked closely to

those who produced animations and with the staf at Volvo’s photo

depot. We also collaborated with those preparing the car on location,

proposed locations in cooperation with location scouts, chose local

production companies, filmed on location with models (everythinh

under strict secrecy), conducted a number of language adaptations of

the basic scripts, mixed the sound of the films, recorded voice-overs,

edited and encoded these films for different carriers (volvocars.com,

campaign sites, dvd:s, exhibition plasma screens etc).

Project management, storyboard and script

The more you succeed in visualizing for the stakeholders early on

in the project, the less the risk for fights in the final editing. The

storyboards are important here. Through them, the stakeholders

get a good picture of how images are to work with the speaker

text. This means a sign-off can often be made in the final editing,

instead of plunging into details.

In all there were around 70 XC60 films in 10 languages. Most of

these were shot in San Francisco, although parts were shot in

Gothenburg, Sweden.

Some films present advanced features (like City Safety) and are

used when communicating with the press. Some films present the

car in general, for example, its design. Other films have a strong,

explicit selling focus. They all have in common, though, that they

build the brand and have a consistency of communication.

Edithouse has the capacity to handle large assignments. XC60 has been such an assignment. On a daily basis, we work with projects a lot smaller than

that and for other assigners than Volvo Cars. We do animations for Volvo Trucks, project presentations for Swebus or films about Volvo Group’s green

agenda. The size of clients and assignments is of no interest. Our engagement will be the same. And our experience when it comes to automotive is

really unique. We know of noone else that has handled as large projects, as many projects or has produced as many films. And always with satisfied

clients. Everybody needs something to make them unique. This is our something.
