Edisto’s Loggerhead TurtlesThere are so many reasons to love Edisto, but perhaps one of the greatest

stems from the island being a favorite nesting ground for Loggerhead Turtles.Loggerheads have lived in the oceans since the age of the dinosaurs, and have beennesting on Edisto long before man settled here.

The loggerhead, like all sea turtles, is an amazing, air breathing reptile. The loggerhead is found in ocean waters throughout the world, but nests onlyon warm tropical and sub-tropical beaches.

Only the females come ashore. The turtle will drag her great body ashore atnight to dig a nest, deposit her eggs, cover the nest, and return to the ocean inabout an hour and a half to three hours. In a single nest, the turtle will lay approx-

imately 120 ping pong size leathery eggs. Depending on the warmth ofthe sand, the eggs will incubate and hatch in 45 to 60

days. The temperature of the sandalso determines the sex ofthe hatchlings. Warmer sandswill produce more femalesand cooler temperatures willresult in more males.

On Edisto, hatching occursfrom July through October. Thebaby loggerheads usually emergefrom the nest as a group underthe cover of darkness. Once in thewater they appear to be solitarycreatures, and each must fend for

FACTS : • Female Loggerhead Turtles nest

every 2 to 3 years.• Nesting turtles will lay 3 to 5 clutches in

a single season. Once the nest is laid, the female never visits her nest again.

• Mature turtles weigh between 250 and 400 pounds.

• Only adult females come ashore. Males spend their entire life in the ocean.

• Sea turtles cannot retract their heads or flippers as land turtles do.

• Adult Loggerheads are reddish brown above and creamy yellow below.

• Between 50 and 150 nests are found on Edisto each year.

• Nesting females are skittish and avoid lighted beaches.

• Hatchling turtles are attracted to light and often go the wrong way.

• Though other species visit, only Loggerheads nest here.

itself. Any animal larger than the threeinch hatchling can be a predator. Thehatchlings must swim for many hoursto reach the open sea where it isbelieved they live for several years in thefloating sargasum weed along the edgesof the ocean currents. It is estimatedthat only one hatchling in a thousandwill survive to maturity. For this reasonit is necessary to protect nests andhatchlings for the continued survival ofthe species.

The following organizationsmake significant contributionsthrough educational efforts andspecific steps to protect theturtles and their nesting areas:

The Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project (P.O. Box 204, Edisto Island SC 29438, 843-869-9030, 843-869-4422)

The Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Projecthas a group of dedicated volunteers that walkour beaches each morning from May throughOctober looking for turtle tracks. They will firstmark the area with flags and then locate thenest. If the nest is in an area that is threatenedby the tides, they will relocate the nest tohigher ground. Nests are marked with a yellowsign and stakes are placed around the nest. Thevolunteers perform many duties essential to theprotection of the nests, primarily checking each

one as they make their morning rounds. Oncethe nest has hatched, the volunteers collectvaluable data to report to the Department ofNatural Resources (DNR).

The volunteers cannot do their job withoutthe assistance of the public. You can help byreporting any unauthorized activities, distur-bance of nests, or harassment of nestingfemales to proper authorities. If you seeunmarked turtle tracks, an injured turtle, or adead sea turtle, please check the stakes in thatterritory for the phone numbers of the volunteerswho are responsible for that particular area.

Learning through Loggerheads (843-869-2998, [email protected], orwww.ltlonline.org)

Learning through Loggerheads hatched asa nonprofit with 501(c)3 status from a logger-head sea turtle project management effort thatstarted nine years ago. Their efforts are visibleas part of the loggerhead sea turtle protectionproject currently focused on Botany Island(located north of Edisto Island). This area is thesecond highest nesting population of logger-head sea turtles in the state of South Carolina.Through this project, local middle and highschool students work as interns during thesummer months. The management of theproject (through a scholarship program) is theonly opportunity of its kind on the SouthCarolina coast where student interns aretrained, work and are paid for their internships.Interns participate in all aspects of theloggerheads’ protection through dailymonitoring, nest protection, data collection andeducational outreach for the second largestnesting aggregation on the South Carolinacoast. Learning through Loggerheads hasestablished annual collaborative programs withThe South Carolina Aquarium, The BermudaAquarium, Museum & Zoo, and The SouthCarolina Department of Natural Resources.

Edisto Beach Interpretive Center (843-869-4430, 8377 State Cabin Road,Tue-Sat from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.)

With the theme “Choosing to Protect OurCoast,” the Edisto Interpretive Center helpspromote the wise use of coastal resources. It isheadquarters for Edisto Beach State Park’sinterpretive programs and curriculum-basedfield studies, and for the S.C. Department ofNatural Resources’ education and researchservices. An exhibit in the center featuresinteractive displays, including a touch tank, which helps visitors understand the fragileresources of the ACE Basin estuarine reserve, the largest such natural reserve on the EastCoast. Loggerhead Sea Turtle Walks are heldduring the summer months.

Turtle Related Tours:Frequently, visitors want to either see a

turtle laying eggs or watch the hatchlingsmake their way back to the water. Rememberthat turtle sightings, hatching, etc. are entirelyon the turtles’ schedule and thus you cannotschedule a visit or walk to observe this eventin their life cycle. While the Edisto BeachLoggerhead Turtle Project and The Learningthrough Loggerheads Organization focusestheir efforts on protection and education aboutthe turtles and their nests, visitors who wouldlike an educational tour should consider thefollowing options:

• The Edisto Interpretive Center (843-869-4430)

Hosts Loggerhead Sea Turtle Walks everyTuesday and Thursday nights (June, July, andAugust). Call for reservations, and note that thesewalks are not suitable for Children under the age of 11.

• Botany Bay Ecotours (843-869-2998, [email protected],www.botanybayplantation.com)

Provides ecotours crafted to help peopleenjoy and understand the amazing plants andanimals that make this area their home. Theirprograms combine cultural history with thenatural history because they have been inextri-cably linked since humans first arrived alongour coast. They support environmental steward-ship by donating a portion of their proceeds tothe Learning through Loggerheads studentconservation program and local non-profits likethe Edisto Island Community Associationscholarship fund.

Information for this summary wasobtained from brochures and web site infofrom the following organizations; The EdistoBeach State Park, The Edisto BeachLoggerhead Turtle Project, Learning throughLoggerheads, and Botany Bay Ecotours.

Botany Bay PlantationBotany Bay Wildlife Management Area

It was a special place to those who came before, and it remains special tothose who will come after...if they understand the specific ethics of the largerACE Basin, in which it plays a uniquely special part. It is the Botany BayWildlife Management Area.

Protected as private lands handed down through centuries by planters maderich by Edisto’s slave laborers working its fertile ground, Civil War andReconstruction led to industrial tycoons discovering the natural treasures ofSouth Carolina’s Lowcountry. Plantation after plantation, bought for getaways

and recreation, evolved into the conservation ethic of “This is my landand it shall be Forever Wild.” Those last words,

“Forever Wild,” today appear onbumper stickers provided bythe S.C. Department ofNatural Resources (DNR),which oversees Botany Bay.

In relative terms, BotanyBay is not true wilderness, but its almost one-fourth ofEdisto Island is more wildernessthan any other. Its guardians –officials and volunteers – needthe help of visitors to keep it so.

Edisto Island 13

Botany Bay is afforded the protectionsof being a S.C. Heritage Trust site andpart of the National Estuarine ResearchReserve, as well as one of DNR’sWildlife Management Areas. But PhilMaier, part of the management team atBotany, says “don’t get bogged downin the nuances associated with thosevarious designations, the focus ofeach is similar with emphasis onmaintaining complete naturalsystems while providing opportuni-ties for compatible human uses.”He goes on to say that “whetherwe enjoy our natural resourcesdirectly through recreation, value themfor the clean waters they help to protect, or simply recognizetheir role in mitigating the impacts of storms, we can all find benefit in rich andhealthy natural resources.”

Among many DNR managed properties statewide, Botany Bay is unique. It is, in addition to being a cultural heritage site as well as open to huntingduring appropriate seasons, centered smack in one of the Lowcountry’s mostpopular tourist destinations. Estimates vary for its first full season, but between50,000 to 100,000 visitors may come to Botany Bay in 2009.

Maier’s job isn’t easy. “The central role of DNR managed properties tomaintaining (the state’s) natural and cultural character (as) the foundation ofour quality of life here.” He adds “the value of our properties as places topeacefully enjoy nature through passive recreation is one that will only escalateas development continues.”

Among experienced outdoor people, including fishermen and hunters(at least among that majority with a proper outlook) passive recreation clichésapply: “leave it as you found it” and “pack it in pack it out.” In Botany Bay’scase, special dispensations have been made in the interest of inspiring childrento the “proper outlook” of conservation.

Accompanied by an adult, children only may “catch and release” fish in Jason’sLake, and may take a quart of sea shells from the beach. It is worth noting thatsea shells are the only thing that may be legally removed from Botany Bay. Inmany locations surveillance is routine, especially of historical sites. There are alsoother rules. For instance if you have a dog or a trailer, leave them at home orwhere you’re staying, to avoid being turned away at the gate. Most of the timeyou will be welcomed at the gate by a volunteer who will inform you of otherregulations, and help you find your way with a map and safety suggestions.

For those new to the kind of outdoor experience provided by Botany Bay,it is wise to remember that nature, in all its beneficence, has its dangers.Walking “off trail” and swimming or boating, local knowledge and preparationare the antidotes for things that swarm, bite and sting. Botany’s staff andvolunteers are prepared to assist all who venture into their domain. Please assistthem in leaving Edisto’s treasure as you found it.

Welcome to our little part of theworld. In a well-hidden and protectedspot in the center of South Carolina’scoastal Lowcountry, rests EdistoIsland. We are unlike our neighborsto the north, Kiawah and Seabrook, and our friends, Fripp and HiltonHead to the south. We’re rich inhistory, wildlife, and natural beau-ty while maintaining a strong position to resistchange that is not beneficial to our community. The absence ofnoise, traffic lights, congestion, and commercialism appeals to residents andvisitors alike. A visit to Edisto is certain to win your approval provided you enjoya laid back and relaxed lifestyle.

The sole golf course on the island enjoys an interesting history dating backto its origin in 1973. Originally known as ‘Oristo’ and later as ‘The EdistoBeach Golf Club,’ the course takes pride in its new name, ‘The PlantationCourse at Edisto.’ After completing a total renovation of the course in 2006 andmoving into our new Pro Shop in May 2007, we can insure that your golfingexperience will be enjoyable and memorable. We hope the following previewwill be helpful to you in making your plans for a visit to Edisto and ThePlantation Course in the near future.

The island known as Edisto is rich in history. Stories abound of the Indianswho first enjoyed the area, on to the struggles and battles of the Civil War years, and later the Mystic of the Plantation days. Thus, the naming of our new coursehonors the past of the area, and encourages excitement about its future as atruly beautiful and interesting layout.
