Tabanan (Bali Post)—There remain some unlicensed

villas in Tabanan. A villa located on the edge of Lake Beratan, Candikun-ing I Hamlet, Candikuning Village, Baturiti, was unable to present its

of Tabanan, Tuesday (Jan 17). The

Aside from being unable to present the permits, the villa building was also suspicious because the courtyard directly bordered with the lip of the lake. Its architectural style was very luxurious like a five star hotel. In front of the entrance lay a lobby and

paving-blocked pathway leading to the villa building.

-amined some corners of the villa, but the condition was quiet. Nevertheless, the villa looked elegant as villas in general. Even, there were few gas cylinders as means of heating water.

a.m. Local Time, a number of workers looked distraught. Strangely, none of the workers knew the phone number

the phone number of the management office located in Kuta. When the number was contacted, in fact, the villa was really unlicensed. “It is said

-pol PP tomorrow (Wednesday—Ed),” said Nyoman Suaba, an investigator of civil servant (PPNS) of the Satpol PP Tabanan after the inspection.

report received, the luxurious villa had been renamed from Bedugul Garden and Lake Resort (BGLR) to Resort Puri Candikuning (RPC). However, until last Tuesday no name board was found at the villa location. Especially for the RPC, the permit had expired in May 2009. More strangely, the super luxurious building only had a permit of budget hotel. “We will report this information to the leadership, includ-ing tracing the documents,” he ex-

when contacted by Suaba, the villa

to get approval from the adjacent landowner to extend the permit.

Ngurah Sudi, admitted if the villa building was not operated commer-cially, but only used privately. So far,

it was only occupied by the owner and even very rare. According to him, the villa project had not totally accom-plished yet. Related to the permits, the man quibbled to know nothing. “We just do clean-up services along with 20 other workers. For the matter of permit, please contact the manage-ment,” he suggested.

Meanwhile, the Headman of Can-dikuning, Made Mudita deplored the licensing issues. He got information if the villa had been renamed. However, his party never knew about the process of renaming.

“Probably, the process took place before my appointment. However,

from the management,” he said. Ideally, Mudita said when extending the permit of villa or other business, village authority should be involved. Prior to submitting all licensing, the

-mendation and approval from village administration. Moreover, according to Mudita, the adjacent landowners of the villa belonged to his extended family. Mudita worried if his party would be disregarded in the process to obtain the permit. (udi)

Enriching the fan collection and design should be per-formed. Other than for facing competition, the strategy was also meant to attract the attention of consumers. “Our home business was pioneered in 1970s and now has come to the third generation,” he explained. In his mind, there was not only a business, but also the way to survive as a fan craftsman preserving the sandalwood fan of Sesetan typicality.

“Our previous characteristic was indeed the maker of sandalwood fan. However, considering the scarcity and the soaring high price of sandalwood, the sandalwood fan is then becoming a complement,” he explained. He currently more focused on the selling of fan made of Bali local wood.

Virtually every month, at least eleven thousand fans could be produced with a variety of motives. Even, 60 percent of which was exported to several countries, like France and Spain. One of the innovative fans initiated was a painted fan for wedding souvenir and hand fan for art shop used as wall decoration. Advantage of this fan was the buyer got a freedom to choose the painting style whether it would be used as hand fan of wall ornament.

Not just a painted fan, Wiracana had now developed an embroidery fan by means of various fabrics. Most fans were ordered by foreign fashion hobbyists. Other than design, the materials used by Wiracana fan had made him still exist in the middle of tight fan business competition. Apart from wood materials, he also used bone, silver and gold to enhance his products. No wonder, such innovation had made the Wiracana fan craft widely known. With the selling price ranging from IDR 10,000 to IDR 8.5 million, Wiracana could not only mine benefits and employ dozens of workers, but could also make his products competitive in the midst of onslaught by China’s fans spreading in the market after the free trade implementation. Fan has become one of the favored souvenirs by residents, chiefly for wedding ceremony. Many craftsmen flocked to create a variety of fan creations in order to draw the attention of consumers. One of them is Wayan Wiraperdhana. The fan craftsman from Sesetan, South Denpasar, has diverse innova-tions in facing the quite tight competition, especially in terms of production and marketing of the fan for a souvenir and wall decoration. “We don’t have a decision to go forward with these things. We don’t have a decision or a date for taking such a decision. This whole thing is very far away,” he said.

Asked to explain what he meant by “far away,” Barak said he did not want to make “forecasts.” Barak’s comments came as tensions rise over Iran’s nuclear programme, which Israel and Western govern-

ments suspect masks a drive for a weapons capability.

Iran denies any such ambition, saying the programme is for peace-ful power generation and medical purposes only, and has refused repeated UN Security Council ultimatums to suspend uranium enrichment. Israel, which has the Middle East’s sole if undeclared nuclear arsenal, has said an Iranian

nuclear weapons capability would pose an existential threat to the Jewish state.

It has not ruled out resorting to military action to prevent any possibility of the Islamic republic developing one. The United States, which has expressed serious con-cern over Iran’s nuclear programme, has pushed for much tougher sanc-tions, targeting its oil exports and financial institutions.

But Israeli officials have accused Washington of dragging its feet, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the sanctions currently in force do not go far enough.

Ethiopia said on Wednesday that five tourists killed in an attack blamed on terrorists in the northeast were all European, and that two other foreigners in the group had been kidnapped. The government confirmed the attack, first reported by state television late on Tuesday, and blamed terrorists backed by its arch-foe neighbour Eritrea.

“Terrorist groups trained and armed by the Eritrean government crossed the border and attacked them and the assailants have gone back,” government spokesman Bereket Simon told AFP.

“They killed five, wounded two and kidnapped four, out of which two foreigners, one police and one driver,” Bereket Simon said. Eritrea vehemently denied involvement in the attack. Simon earlier said those killed were a German, a Belgian, an Italian, a Hungarian and an Austrian.

He did not give the nationalities of those wounded or abducted. State television said the wounded had been taken to hospital by

government forces in the region. The attack occurred Monday in the remote Afar region near Ethiopia’s border with Eritrea. The group was visiting the Erta Ale volcanic site.

A German foreign ministry offi-cial who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity said they were probing reports that German nationals could have been victims of the attack.

“Reports of an attack on tour-ist group with German citizens in Ethiopia are being followed up. The German foreign ministry and the German embassy are working with determination to clarify the matter and the fate of the German citizens,” the officials said on phone from Berlin.

The official said the tourists were travelling in the same group. The Afar region, an inhospitable scrubland and desert with shal-low salty lakes and chains of volcanoes, is reputed to be one of the hottest places on Earth. It also known for hominid fossil finds. Addis Ababa routinely accuses Eritrea of supporting rebels fight-ing the Ethiopian regime, charges that Eritrea denies.

Prince Philip, the 90-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, resumed official duties on Tuesday evening for the first time since undergoing heart surgery over Christmas. The Duke of Edinburgh, as he is officially known, looked relaxed as he arrived for a dinner at Cambridge University to mark 100 years to the day since explorer Captain Robert Scott reached the South Pole.

Adventurer Ranulph Fiennes and Prince Albert of Monaco were also among the 100 guests attending the event at Corpus Christi College to raise funds for the Scott Polar Re-search Institute.

Prince Philip was admitted to hospital on December 23 after complaining of chest pains, and was found to have a blocked coro-nary artery. He underwent surgery to have a stent fitted, before being released on December 27.

The health scare was the most

serious yet for the prince, the longest serving royal consort in British his-tory, and came as the queen prepares to celebrate her diamond jubilee year marking 60 years on the throne.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. In the temple`s compound, peo-ple from many different religious and ethnic backgrounds work hand in hand to prepare the house of worhip for Chinese New Year cel-ebrations on January 23.

Local civil defense personnel (Han-

sip) most of whom are Muslim can be seen preparing themselves to guard the temple which will be visited by many people on the eve of or on Imlek as Lunar New Year is locally called.

The temple`s walls is given a new paint cover by workers who

are mostly Muslims.“We try our best to prepare the

temple for the celebrations. That is why we need the cooperation of many sides, including people living around the temple,” said Yu Ie (37), the Jin De Yuan temple`s manager. “It does not matter what their religion or ethnic identity is,” Yu Ie added.

“I would really like to help here, because I have been living around here since I was little, and people from this temple have always been

kind to me,” said Suratin (50), one of the civil defense guards said.

Imlek was not listed as an official holiday on Indonesian calendars for many years but since early 2002, it has been a national holiday, indicat-ing a strengthening of the nation`s interfaith and inter-ethnic sense of tolerance end respect.

“Historically, the Jin De Yuan temple is the oldest house of worhip of its kind in Jakarta. It was first built in 1650 but destroyed by the colonial government in 1740 and

rebuilt in 1755 and then named Jin De Yuan which means virtue of gold.” Yu Ie explained.

In the runup and during Imlek, the alley way leading to the temple from its main gate is usually lined by beggars of various ethnicities and religions who expect tithes from temple goers.

“We do not feel disturbed by or try to drive the beggars away from the front of the temple as long as they behave in orderly manner,” said Yu Ie.

SURABAYA — Police say 19 illegal migrants, including survivors of a shipwreck, have escaped from an Indonesian detention house.

Thirty detainees fled Monday night through a tunnel they dug themselves, and 11 have been recaptured in a search across East Java province, said Maj. Hadi Suryo, the police chief in the pro-vincial town of Bangil.

Iwan Rustiawan, head of the detention house, said among those escaping were survivors of a shipwreck last month. The ship that sank Dec. 17 carried nearly 250 asylum seekers from Af-ghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan trying to reach Australia in search of a better life.

Only 49 survived. The recaptured detainees told police they were

trying to find their contacts to arrange another boat to reach Australia.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has asked the government to push state-owned banks to lead in low-ering the interest rates on lending.

“We hope that the Vice President and the State Enterprises Minister will encourage state-owned banks to take the lead in lowering the lending rates to the same level as those in other ASEAN countries,” Kadin chairman Bambang Suryo Sulistyo said at a meeting with Vice President Boediono at the latter`s office here Tuesday.

With state-owned banks pio-

neering a lowering of lending rates it was hoped other banks would follow suit so that interest rates would become more competitive and investment could increase.

He said lending rates had difficulty coming down although inflation had remained under control and tend-ing to drop and banks had plenty of liquidity. Indonesia`s inflation rate in 2011 was recorded at 3.79 percent.

Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia`s policy was conservatively keeping its benchmark rate at six percent while regionally and globally inter-est rates had sharply dropped.

In addition, the banking industry`s

inefficiency had made credit in the field costly. The lending rate in the field now averaged 11 percent.

“The business community, small- and medium-scale enterprises in particular, is thereby unable to benefit from the currently favorable external conditions of the money market,” he said.

Bambang also said it was quite possible there was a money market (deposits and SBI (Bank Indonesia Certificates) auctions) cartel where big capital owners, state owned en-terprises and government ministries demanded special interest rates caus-ing lending rates to remain high.

JAKARTA - Febby Kemala Dewi returned to work at a Jakarta ac-counting firm after three months of maternity leave but struggled, like many new mums, to balance her home and work lives -- especially keeping her infant daughter fed.

Unwilling to stop breastfeeding, unable to pump enough for a whole day in the morning before work and leery of giving her baby anything but the freshest milk, she finally turned to a unique Jakarta service -- a breast milk motorbike courier.

“I have to work, but at the same

time I can still feed my baby,” said Dewi, the wall by her desk plas-tered with pictures of her smiling daughter, eight-month-old Ashalina Putri.

Now, the 29-year-old IT consul-tant pumps breast milk at her office in central Jakarta and a courier comes to pick up the bottles around lunchtime.

Placing them in a padded cooler box whose strap he then slings over his shoulder, the courier rides 45 minutes to an hour on a motorbike through choked Jakarta streets to deliver the milk to Dewi’s mother, who cares for the baby.

Like the water flows, myriad of foreign tourists throng the island of Nusa Lem bongan. So, it is not mistaken if this bijou island becomes one of the most popular marine tourist attractions. Every day, they come to the tiny island located in the Klungkung Re-gency. Even, during peak season the number of tourists coming can reach 1,500 people.

Sweetness of honey belongs to Nusa Lembongan makes a number of cruise companies sell-ing holiday package over there. One of them is Bounty Cruise based at Benoa Harbor. In the morning at around 9:30 am Local Time, Bounty Cruise has started its voyage to Nusa Lembongan. Passengers are just like a king because they are served by the crews amicably. Like the facility on a luxury cruise, breakfast is available aboard.

The voyage from Benoa to

Nusa Lembongan Island takes approximately one hour by speed at 20-25 knots or 45 kilometers per hour. During the voyage, we get to enjoy some entertainment, ranging from watching films to sing along on the boat deck. Songs played by the bands are adjusted to the tourist market. On Monday, for example, is specifically serving tourists from China, so the song played is a Mandarin song.

Nusa Lembongan is a small island of calcareous land. The life of local people seems to give isolated impression considering there has no adequate transporta-tion service. A number of villas and hotels have been established on steep hills and the beach. Even, on the narrow roadside measuring 2.5 meters has already existed a number of art shops and Internet cafes.

To go to a number of objects on the island, we use tarpaulin-roofed pickups. After driving about five miles, we arrive at the center of

seaweed village. At this place, we will find farmers who are cleaning the seaweed and also process it.

An attractive place to visit here is the unique underground house located in the cave known as Gala-Gala house. To enter this house, we have to go down the stairs, because this house is located 10 meters under ground of limestone. The height of the cave varies from about 1 to 1.75 meters. Some-times, we have to duck and crouch to reach the existing rooms.

Gala-Gala house was made in 1961 until 1976 by a village resident named Made Byasa who worked as a puppeteer. Such a unique work of Byasa was inspired by the life story of the Pandavas during their living in the forest. For 17 years Byasa had worked day and night to realize such monumental work. Since the age of 75 years, his old body kept on digging and when he was 93 years old he stopped, then he died at the age of 96 years.

Enjoy the uniqueness of Nusa Lembongan

SAN FRANCISC - Yahoo Inc co-founder JerryYang has quitthe company he started in 1995, appeasing shareholders who hadblasted the Internet pioneer for pursuing an ineffective personalvision and impeding investment deals that could have transformedthe struggling company.

Yang’s abrupt departure comes two weeks afterYahoo appointedScott Thompson its new CEO, with a mandate to return the once-leading Internet portal to the heights it enjoyed in the 1990s.

Wall Street views the exit of “Chief Yahoo” Yang as smoothingthe way for a major infusion of cash from private equity, or a dealto sell off much of its 40 percent slice of China’sAlibaba, unlockingvalue for shareholders.

Shares of Yahoo gained 3 percent in after-hours trade.“Everyone is going to assume this means a deal is more likely

with the Asia counterparts,” Macquarie analyst Ben Schacter said.“The perception among shareholders was Jerry was more focusedon trying to rebuild Yahoo than necessarily on maximizing near-term shareholder value.

“It certainly seems things are coming to a head as far as realizingthe value of these assets.”

Yang, who is severing all formal ties with the company by re-signing all positions including his seat on the board of directors, has

an aborted sale to Microsoft in 2008.Yang’s exit comes roughly amonthbeforedissident shareholders

can nominate rival directors to Yahoo’s board. The remaining nine members of Yahoo’s board, which includes

Hewlett-Packard executive Vyomesh Joshi and private investorGary Wilson, are all up for reelection this year.

Yang’s departure could be part of a broader board shakeup, said

which owns Yahoo shares.“If they don’t move quickly on these things, they run the risk

of a proxy battle and they are doing everything they can to avoidthat.”

The company did not say whereYang was headed or why he hadsuddenly resigned. CEOThompson offered few clues in a memo toemployees obtained by Reuters following the announcement.

“I am grateful for the support and warm welcome Jerry providedme in my early days here. His insights and perspective were invalu-able, helping me to dig deeper, more quickly than I could have onmy own, into some of the key elements of the company and howit operates.

In a report sharply cuttingits world economic growth ex-pectations, the World Bank saidEurope was probably already inrecession. If the euro area debtcrisis deepened, global economicforecasts would be significantlylower.

“The sovereign debt crisisin the euro zone appears to becontained,” Justin Lin, the chiefeconomist for the World Bank, told reporters in Beij ing onWednesday.

“However, the risk of a globalfreezing-up of the markets andas well as a global crisis similarto what happened in September2008 are real.”

The World Bank predictedworld economic growth of 2.5percent in 2012 and 3.1 percent in2013, well below the 3.6 percentgrowth for each year projectedin June.

“We think it is now importantto think through not only slowergrowth but sharp deteriorations,as a prudent measure,” said HansTimmer, director of developmentprospects at the bank.

The World Bank said if theeuro area debt crisis escalates, global growth would be about 4percentage points lower.

It forecast high-income econo-mies would expand just 1.4percent in 2012 as the euro areashrinks 0.3 percent, sharp down-ward revisions from growth fore-casts last June of 2.7 percent and1.8 percent, respectively.

It cut its forecast for growth indeveloping economies to 5.4 per-cent for 2012 from its previousforecast of 6.2 percent, sayingexpansion in Brazil and India andto a lesser extent Russia, SouthAfrica and Turkey, had slowedalready.

It saw a slight pick up in growthin developing economies in 2013

to 6 percent. But the report saidthreats to growth are still rising, suggesting the outlook remainedhighly uncertain.

“The downturn in Europe andweaker growth in developingcountries raises the risk that thetwo developments reinforce oneanother, resulting in an evenweaker outcome,” it said.

It also cited failure so far toresolve high debts and deficits inJapan and the United States andslow growth in other high-incomecountries, and cautioned thosecould trigger sudden shocks.

On top of that, political ten-sions in the Middle East andNorth Africa could disrupt oilsupplies and add another blow toglobal prospects.

It said that while Europe wasmoving toward a long-term solu-tion to its debt problems, marketsremained skittish.

On balance, the World Banksaid global economic conditionswere “fragile and there remainsgreat uncertainty as to how mar-kets will evolve over the mediumterm.”

Against that backdrop, it saiddeveloping countries were evenmore vulnerable than they werein 2008 because they could findthemselves facing reduced capitalflows and softer trade.

In addition, many developingcountries have weaker financesand wouldn’t be able to respondto a new crisis as vigorously.

China’s growth -- forecast inthe report at 8.4 percent in 2012-- could help bolster importsand gives it “big fiscal space” torespond to changing conditions,Lin said.

“No country and no regionwill escape the consequences ofa serious downturn,” the WorldBank said, adding that now wasthe time for developing countries

to plan how to soften the impactof a potential deep crisis.

A serious crisis would mani-fest itself in not just reducedtrade flows, but also reversal ofcapital flows, making it hard forcountries, especially in EasternEurope and Latin America, whohave debt coming due.

The World Bank pointed outthat since last August risk aver-sion to Europe has shot up and“changed the game” for develop-ing countries that have seen theirborrowing costs escalate sharplyand the flow of capital to themdecrease.

High-income countries haveprime responsibility for prevent-ing a crisis, the World Bank said, but “developing countries have anobligation to support that processboth through the G20 (Group of20 rich and developing countries)and other international fora.”

Among other things, devel-oping countries “could help byavoiding entering into tradedisputes and by allowing marketprices to move freely.”

It also said developing-countrygovernments should start contin-gency planning to identify spend-ing priorities and to try to shoreup safety net programs. Thosecontingencies should take intoaccount possible drops in com-modity prices and a fall in capitalinflows, the World Bank said.

The World Bank forecast islower than ones from the In-

the Organisation for EconomicCo-operation and Development, who last officially updated theirnumbers in September and No-vember, respectively.

expects to cut its forecasts hadpredicted world growth of 4.0percent in 2012, while the OECDhad penciled in 3.4 percent.

“Miss Bala” is Mexico’s entry in the foreign-language film category at the Academy Awards and, sadly, it couldn’t be more relevant in depicting the brutal violence plaguing Mexico’s northern border areas. At its center is the gorgeous, leggy Stephanie Sigman, a former model making her striking film debut. Naranjo doesn’t let us see her face at the film’s start; he shoots her from the back or the side, her dark, wavy hair obscuring her features. But

when she finally turns around and flashes a smile — totally natural, with no makeup — and speaks in her play-ful, husky voice, she’s radiant.

Sigman stars as Laura Guerrero, a young woman still living at home with her father and brother outside Tijuana who hopes to be crowned the next Miss Baja California. (The title is a play on words: “bala” means bullet in Spanish.) Her tacky, clingy dress and chipped fingernails tell us

everything we need to know about the disparity between the life she lives and the one to which she aspires.

Laura goes to a club with her best friend, a fellow contestant who insists they could meet some guys with con-nections there who might help them win. Instead, she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, as gang members shoot the place up while targeting some DEA agents who are partying there. Laura escapes briefly but she’s seen too much, and ends up becoming their captive pawn.

The group’s leader is the wily Lino (a subtly menacing Noe Fernandez), who’s been terrorizing northern Mex-ico with his minions while working the angles across the United States border, as well.

NEW YORK — Jessica Alba has another new baby. She’s launched an e-commerce company at Honest.com (named after her 3-year-old daughter Honor) to sell eco-friendly and toxic-free baby products and household items for a monthly subscription. Alba, who welcomed her second daughter Haven in 2011, said Tuesday the idea was born after she learned that toxic chemicals are in widely used, everyday products.

“I would buy what I thought was like an eco-brand and pay out the

wazoo for it and then find out that it’s made with the same ingredients as any other brand, but the packaging is a little more biodegradable and you’re like ‘But I care about the product touching my kid. Is that OK?’”

She decided the best solution was to make available the kinds of prod-ucts she would buy. To launch the business, she partnered with author and environmentalist Christopher Gavigan, ShoeDazzle founder Brian Lee and PriceGrabber.com execu-tive Sean Kane.

The 30-year-old actress said the venture is “hands down” more nerve-

racking than the opening of a new movie but also more gratifying.

“I came up with the idea. I had to pitch it to my partners and they came on board and together we created the company from scratch,” she said. “From the packaging to the bottles to the product that’s inside, the way that the interfacing is with the website, all of that is really from me ... it’s taken three years to get here.”

To make a purchase, consumers sign up on Honest.com and choose from subscription packages for prod-ucts including diapers, shampoo and laundry detergent. The products are

then delivered monthly to the buyer’s door. Alba plans to expand the line based on customer feedback.

“It’s important that a brand that’s meant for families actually listens to families, and it’s not just some big corporate entity making these huge decisions,” she said.

NEW YORK — Paula Deen, the Southern belle of butter and heavy cream, makes no apologies for waiting three years to disclose she has diabetes while continuing to dish up deep-fried cheesecake and other high-calorie, high-fat recipes on TV. She said she isn’t changing the comfort cooking that made her a star, though it isn’t clear how much of it she’ll con-tinue to eat while she promotes health-conscious recipes along with a diabetes drug she’s endors-ing for a Danish company.

“I’ve always said, ‘Practice moderation, y’all.’ I’ll probably say that a little louder now,” Deen said Tuesday after reveal-ing her diagnosis on NBC’s “Today” show. “You can have diabetes and have a piece of cake. You cannot have diabetes and eat a whole cake.”

Health activists and one fel-low chef called her a hypocrite for promoting an unhealthy diet along with a drug to treat its likely effects. Deen added

her support of the Novo Nor-disk company to a collection of lucrative endorsements that include Smithfield ham and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

Deen, who will turn 65 on Thursday, said she kept her diagnosis private as she and her family figured out what to do, presumably about her health and a career built solidly on Southern cooking. Among her recipes: deep-fried cheesecake covered in chocolate and pow-dered sugar, and a quiche that calls for a pound of bacon.

“I really sat on this informa-tion for a few years because I said, ‘Oh, my gosh, what am I going to do about this? Is my life fixing to change? Am I no longer going to like my life?” she asked. “I had to have time to adjust and soak it all in and get up all the information that I could.”

While Deen, who lives in Savannah, Ga., has cut out the sweet tea she routinely drank straight through to bedtime and taken up treadmill walking, she plans few changes on the air.

This is only the fifth time sci-entists have confirmed chemically Martian meteorites that people wit-nessed as they fell. The fireball was spotted in the sky six months ago, but the rocks were not discovered on the ground in North Africa until the end of December.

This is an important and unique opportunity for scientists trying to learn about Mars’ potential for life. So far, no NASA or Russian space-craft has returned bits of Mars, so the only Martian samples scientists

can examine are those that come here in meteorite showers.

Scientists and collectors of me-teorites are ecstatic, and already the rocks are fetching big money because they are among the rarest things on Earth, rarer even than gold.

A special committee of meteor-ite experts, including some NASA scientists, confirmed the test results Tuesday. They certified that 15 pounds (7 kilograms) of meteorite recently collected came from Mars. The biggest rock weighs more than

2 pounds (1 kilogram).Astronomers think millions of

years ago something big smashed into Mars and sent rocks hurtling through the solar system. After a long journey through space, one of those rocks plunged through Earth’s atmosphere, splitting into smaller pieces.

Most other Martian meteorite samples sat around on Earth for millions of years, or at the very least for decades, before they were discovered, which makes them tainted with Earth materials and life. These new rocks, while still probably contaminated because they have been on Earth for months, are purer. The last time a Martian meteorite fell and was found fresh was in 1962.

GENEVA — It’s high noon for the humble leap second. After ten years of talks, governments are headed for a showdown vote this week on an issue that pits techno-logical precision against nature’s whims. The United States, France and others are pushing for coun-tries at a U.N. telecom meeting to abolish the leap second, which for 40 years has kept computers in sync with the Earth day.

Leap seconds are necessary to prevent atomic clocks from speeding ahead of solar time. They are added at irregular intervals, effectively stretching atomic time by a heartbeat to make up for the irregular wobble in the Earth’s rotation.

Critics warn that scrapping the leap second would break the last link between the passing of time and the course of the sun across the sky. But backers say machines shouldn’t any longer be tethered to the imprecise cycle of sunrise and sunset.

“This would be an important decision because the problem of introducing the leap second would disappear and we would have a more steady time than we have today,” Vincent Meens, an official at the International Telecommu-nication Union who has chaired technical talks on the issue, said Tuesday.

Operators of cell phone net-works, financial markets and air traffic control systems could then rely on the near-absolute precision offered by atomic clocks without having to worry about stopping their systems for the length of a heartbeat every year or two.

“Most of the people who oper-ate time services favor discon-tinuing leap seconds,” said Judah Levine, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technol-ogy in Boulder, Colorado.

“The main problem is that the leap second is usually imple-mented by stopping the clock for one second. However, the world doesn’t stop,” he said.

An exceptionally long-running in-vestigation has backed use of the Pill to ease menstruation pain, according to a study published Wednesday. The findings come from health research spanning 30 years, gathering more than 1,400 Swedish women born in 1962, 1972 and 1982.

They filled out a lengthy ques-tionnaire when they were enrolled in the probe at the age of 19, and did the same again five years later at the age of 24. Those who took oral contraceptives reported significant drops in two acknowledged mea-surements of pain.

Age was also a factor. As a

woman aged, the severity of period pain decreased somewhat, but this effect was independent from the Pill, and smaller. The investigation, led by gynaecologist Ingela Lindh at Gothenburg University’s Institute of Clinical Sciences, is published online by the European journal Hu-man Reproduction.

The Pill is sometimes prescribed by doctors to reduce period pain, and many women attest to its ef-fectiveness, but the scientific verdict has so far been mixed. Two big re-views of the evidence, carried out in 2007 and 2009, said there had been a lack of randomised controlled tri-als to provide a clear answer.

Randomised control trials are the

gold standard of clinical research. They entail enrolling volunteers who are randomly assigned either to a group that uses the genuine treat-ment or to a comparison group which uses dummy pills as a comparison. The new paper could help provide a definitive answer, its authors hope.

The probe is unusually long and uses each volunteer as a personal benchmark to measure the impact of the Pill and ageing on period symptoms.

Menstrual pain, known as dys-menorrhoea, has been estimated to account for 600 million lost work-ing hours and two billion dollars in lost productivity annually in the United States alone.

World champion and five-time Monte winner Sebastien Loeb (Citroen) had been quickest as expected on this morn-ing’s Le Moulinon to Antraigues opener, albeit by just one second ahead of the flying Dani Sordo’s Mini.

SS1 had seen dry asphalt, but the following Burzet to St Martial stage

featured patches of snow and ice. Loeb and Ford driver Latvala both opted for a mix of studded and slick tyres, placing one studded tyre at the front and one at the rear, diagonally apart.

While Loeb ran soft tyres, Latvala was on super softs, and despite having never tested the slick/studded combina-tion in this configuration before, he put in an incredible stage time - 52s quicker than Loeb.

That moved Latvala from fourth place, 28s off the lead, to first - with a 30.5s advantage over Loeb.

Petter Solberg is third in the second works Ford, having impressively got through SS2 with no studded tyres at all and still been second-quickest, 28s be-hind Latvala but 24s faster than Loeb.

After his superb SS1 performance, Sordo clipped a wall and damaged his Mini’s suspension on SS2. The Spaniard was still able to nurse his car through the stage and remains fourth overall.

Mikko Hirvonen was third after SS1 but struggled in SS2’s tricky conditions as he continues to acclimatise to the Citroen DS3, leaving him fifth.

DAMON Hill believes that Formula 1 will miss Rubens Bar-richello if the Brazilian does not return to the grid after missing out on the Williams seat. Bar-richello turns 40 this year and al-though he has always maintained his desire to continue to race in F1, with only one seat left open at HRT it is unlikely that he will be on the grid in 2012.

Former rival Hill, who raced against Barrichello for seven sea-sons in F1, believes that he was a big part of the grand prix scene. “There are a limited number of characters in F1 and Rubens has been thoroughly a positive char-acter,” Hill told AUTOSPORT. “People like and respect Rubens

and his abilities.“He has had an incredibly long

career and that is worth a lot - he’s the most experienced F1 driver ever so people will miss him as a person and a driver.” Hill reckons that if Barrichello’s F1 career is over, it will be difficult for him to adjust to no longer being a grand prix driver.

Barrichello has raced in F1 full-time since 1993 and Hill pointed out that there are few other categories that can offer the same feeling as racing at the top level. “It’s a really difficult thing for drivers to give up, or to be forced to give up, something they really love and that is their way of life,” said Hill, who retired at

the end of 1999.“You know as a driver that

some day it’s going to happen and that you will have to stop. The shame is that there is no-where to go next for a driver. “You could go to DTM, but nothing is the same as F1 and there’s no gradual climbdown from it.

“When you’ve been doing it as long as Rubens has, when March comes around, it’s going to be a shock to the system.” Bar-richello has yet to make clear his plans for 2012, although he did wish Bruno Senna, who landed the Williams seat, good luck and say that “the future is wide open” on Twitter.
