IT’S NOT JUST ERA: Memphis’ pitching staff has been one of the more dominant units in the league over the last two months, culminating in a league-leading 3.16 ERA in June. The Redbirds enter today having allowed the fewest runs (341, 4.2 per game) and third-fewest hits (693, 8.5 per game) in the loop.

Additionally, Memphis pitchers sit second in the league in strikeouts (690, 8.6 K/9), earned runs allowed (310, 3.8 per game), and total walks (226, 2.8 BB/9).

CHANGE IN CULTURE: Memphis finds itself with the best record in the league thanks to winning in a variety of ways. After leading the league in homers in April (29), the ‘Birds were t-8th in blasts in June (31). Meanwhile, the pitching staff, which ranked 10th in the league in ERA in April (4.54), rose to second in May (3.84) and was the league’s best in June (3.16).

WRAPPING UP JUNE: The Redbirds completed June by going 17-10, increasing their division lead by 7.5 games. It marked the best month of June record-wise for the franchise since 2011 (19-10) and third-best record in the PCL this year. Memphis blasted 31 home runs, its most in any month since August 2014 (36), and most in June since 2008 (37). The Redbirds pitching staff posted a remarkable 3.16 ERA, tied for the second-best monthly mark in the PCL this season (Oklahoma City, 2.93 in April).

SALVAGING THE SPLIT: Yesterday’s victory continued an incredible trend for Memphis when it comes to series records. The Redbirds have now won or split 17 consecutive series (8-0-8) since losing three of four at Colorado Springs from April 18-21.

Outside of that series and dropping two of three in the previous set to Oklahoma City from April 15-17, Memphis is 9-0-9 in series this year. For reference, last year’s team won eight series the entire season, finishing with an 8-13-14 series record.

MEMPHIS MASHERS: Memphis hit two more home runs yesterday to increase the season-long total to 94 bombs, sixth-most in the PCL.

The Redbirds have now hit six home runs in the series and 11 during the first seven games of this homestand. Memphis is now 36-15 when hitting at least one homer in a game this year.

Memphis is way ahead of its pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 94th homer until game 112, which came on August 5. The Redbirds have already hit 50 homers at AutoZone Park this season after blasting 51 in Memphis all of last year.

STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 60 runs in the first inning and 41 runs in the second inning of games, outscoring the opposition 101-53 in the game’s first two frames. The +48 discrepancy is countered, though, by Memphis being just +15 over the course of the year from innings 3-9 and extras.

Memphis has scored first in 52 of its 76 games this season, which is the most in the PCL. The Redbirds are 35-17 overall in those contests, which is middle of the pack in the league (.673, 10th).

STOP HITTING ME: The ‘Birds have now been hit 52 times, which is far and away the most in the PCL Nashville, 36). Todd Cunningham has been hit 14 times this year, which is the most in the PCL.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: The Redbirds are 35-for-62 in steal attempts this year, but have rounded into form recently. After starting the year 17-for-41, Memphis is 18-for-21 in attempts the last 32 games. The 35 steals are the second-fewest in the PCL.

IN A PINCH: After starting the year by going 5-for-24 (.208), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 15-for-their-last-31 (.484) over the last 43 games. Overall, pinch-hitters are 20-for-55 (.364) on the season. Nine different players have recorded a pinch hit, led by Rangel Ravelo’s five knocks.

GOING EXTRA TIME: The Redbirds have excelled in extra-inning games this season, posting a perfect 6-0 record in such contests. Memphis is one of two PCL teams that remain unbeaten in extra-inning games (Colorado Springs 3-0), while the six wins are the most in the circuit. The ‘Birds have outscored the opposition 10-1 in extras this year.

AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals full-season minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple categories:

- Average: Bader (.296, 5th)- HR: Wisdom (16, 1st), Bader (14, t-2)- RBI: Wisdom (51, 1st), Martini (44, 4th)- Wins: Flaherty (8, 1st)- ERA: Gallen (2.19, 2nd), Flaherty (2.29, 3rd)- Saves: Lucas (6, t-3), Herget (5, t-5)- Strikeouts: Flaherty (93, 1st), Gallen (87, 2nd), Mayers (68, t-3)

MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHESALL-STAR SELECTIONS: The PCL announced Wednesday that Carson Kelly, Ryan Sherriff, and Luke Weaver have been selected to represent the Redbirds in the Triple-A All-Star Game.

For Kelly, it’s his third All-Star appearance, joining Peoria (Midwest League, ‘14) and Springfield (‘16). Sherriff pitched in the Triple-A All-Star Game a year ago, while Weaver was named a mid-season All-Star for the first time in his career.

A FULL DOZEN: Luke Weaver was promoted to St. Louis today, becoming the 12th different Redbird to join the big league club this year. Weaver made his MLB debut a year ago, and left the club this season with a 7-1 mark and a 1.93 ERA, which would have led the league by more than a full run had he pitched enough innings to qualify. Of the 12 players, eight still remain with the Cardinals as of today.

FULL MONTY: Mark Montgomery tossed a scoreless ninth inning Saturday, continuing his tremendous campaign. Montgomery is tied for fourth in the league in holds (7) and ranks among league relievers in fewest baserunners/9 IP (8.93, 2nd) and lowest opponents average (.188, 2nd)

He has allowed runs in only nine of his 28 outings, and has posted a sub-3.00 ERA in each month.

TWO (OR THREE) OLIVES: Nick Martini collected another base knock Friday night, going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Martini has posted five multi-hit games in his last 10 games overall (15-for-37, .405, 3B, HR, 6 R, 9 RBI), but saw his five-game hitting streak come to an end yesterday in a pinch-hitting appearance

After suffering through a 2-for-24 skid from June 7-16, Martini has reached base safely in 10 of 13 games, driving in 12 runs in the process. Since joining the Redbirds on May 6, 15 of his 29 RBI have come with two outs, seven have given the ‘Birds the lead, and three have been game-winning RBI.

A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: All-Star Ryan Sherriff has been one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 32 games, tied for third-most in the PCL. Despite the heavy workload, the southpaw ranks third among league relievers in fewest baserunners allowed per 9 IP (9.33) and third in lowest walk rate per 9 IP (1.47).

Eight of the 14 runs Sherriff has allowed this year have come in two of his outings. Aside from that, Sherriff has a 1.59 ERA (6er/34ip).

PROSPECTS ON THE MOUND: With the addition of Jack Flaherty from Double-A Springfield, the Redbirds currently possess two of the top starting pitching prospects in the St. Louis organization (BA/MLB.com rank) in Flaherty (#11/#5), and Marco Gonzales (#13/#19).

Both were selected in the first round of their respective drafts: Gonzales (13th, ‘13) and Flaherty (34th, ‘14) and join Mike Mayers (93rd, ‘13) and Zac Gallen (106th, ‘13) as top 110 picks in the rotation.

PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, six of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Jack Flaherty (#11), Marco Gonzales (#13), John Gant (#27) and Breyvic Valera (#29).

THE ROSTER: Of the 25 players who comprise Memphis’ active roster, 20 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 13 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of MLB experience with 10 players combining for 497 games played.
