School Times Student attendance is a whole school priority and your child is encouraged to attend school unless sick or has ap-proved leave of absence. Students are required to be at school and ready for the start of the school day at 9.10am and they are dismissed at 3.10pm. Student playground supervision commences at 8.40 am and students should not be at school prior to this. Extra-curricular Opportunities At Edgeworth PS it is our intention to ensure students are provided with a variety of extra-curricular activities to en-gage, inspire and nurture skills, interests and talents beyond the classroom. Wide selections of opportunities for students K-6 are detailed in this newsletter for your information. I commend the many staff who dedicate their time to prepare and supervise this learning for our students. School Development Day Variation Plans are underway to reschedule the end of year designated School Development Day on 20 December to two eve-nings in Semester 1. Students K-6 finish school on Friday 16 December and therefore the 20 December 2016 is a NSW DEC designated pupil-free day. Information regarding School Development Days is attached to this newsletter. Please contact the school if this change causes undue concern. Swimming Carnival Success Congratulations to all students, staff and community for another excellent school Swimming Carnival. Students en-joyed a fun day mixed with competition and novelty events. Congratulations to our winning house Paterson and to every student who participated. Thank you to Kristen McGrath and Brendan Gray for organising such a highly suc-cessful carnival, to staff for their diligent supervision, and parents who travelled to the pool and supported our carni-val.

Disability Parking The school has two disability parking bays located in the staff carpark entering from Oakville Rd. This is reserved for parents and visitors picking up or settling down passengers who are displaying a Disability Parking Permit only. If for some reason the space is not available cars displaying such permits are permitted to park in the car park adjacent to the canteen. If for some reason you require temporary parking due to student/ adult injury please contact the school office for permission to park near the canteen area. At NO TIME can cars be left double parked obstructing another person’s access to their vehicle. Your support in this matter is most appreciated. P&C Annual General Meeting I draw to your attention and encourage your attendance at the P&C AGM to be held at 6.30pm on Monday 14 March in the school library. The P&C meet on the third Monday of each month to plan, discuss and evaluate school opera-tions including the canteen, school fundraising and social activities. The P&C work in partnership with the school staff taking an active role in decision making and providing invaluable support by fundraising for the purchase of ad-ditional resources to support student learning. Details of the meeting are included in this newsletter for your consid-eration and new members are always welcome. Update of student information A new Student Management System is being rolled out to all schools across NSW over the coming weeks. We re-quire the updating of data that may or may not have occurred in the last 12 months. We will be sending home our Student Emergency Contact and Medical details sheet to be updated and returned as soon as possible. This will be sent home shortly. We also require the updating and renewal, if applicable to your child, of Health Care Management Plans for any medical conditions eg anaphylaxis and asthma. We also require copies of any AVOs or Court Orders. This is information is vital for the health and wellbeing of your child/children.

Deputy Principal Report Leaders Induction Ceremony Last Friday we held our Leaders Induction Ceremony and our first celebration of our school’s 125th anniversary. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Mitchell and her amazing team for the hard work and dedication behind the scenes to make it such a successful day. Many of our special guests were extremely complimentary of the school, the students and the quality of education that is provided for our wonderful students. Have a look at the twitter feed from Newcastle Morning Herald online to see some great photos! Swimming Carnival Our annual swimming carnival last Thursday provided plenty of opportunities to highlight the sporting talent, teamwork and enthusiasm of our students who continue to impress at every opportunity. Congratulations to Mr Gray, Miss McGrath and the staff who collaborated on the day to ensure every student had fun, enjoyed quality time in the water, were sun safe and had a fantastic day. Tell Them from Me student Surveys (Years 2-6) This term, Edgeworth PS will again participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me stu-dent feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on stu-dent wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Analysis of feedback will assist the school in making improvements. The survey is completely confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be ad-ministered during school hours between 14 March and 8 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the consent form to school by Friday 26 February. Edgeworth PS Fete Looking forward to seeing everyone at the school fete on Saturday 27 February. Awards 125th Anniversary News

Friday’s Leaders’ Induction Assembly marked the beginning of our school’s big birthday year. The bell rang out loudly under the expert hand of Mr Brian Heriv-el; the students sang “Happy Birthday” lustily and did an even better job of the three cheers. I’m sure shoppers at Edgeworth Town Mall could hear. Our 2016 student leaders looked resplendent in their formal uniforms and the house cap-tains and vice-captains looked very smart as well. Thank you to all the parents who came along to proudly pin the badges on the children and stayed afterwards for morning tea. It was a pleasure to welcome back to the school nine past lead-ers: Ray Warry, Paul Nightingale, Bill Poole, Col Nichols, Maree Lunn, John Quinn, Carolyn Knight, John Dwyer and Annette Van Egmond, all principals at some point in the last 40 years, and not forgetting Dianne Dellaway, our office manag-er for 31 years. They were most complimentary about how wonderful all the students looked and behaved during the assembly and really enjoyed handing out the commemorative badges to all the students. If any student was away on Friday or perhaps has a badge that is faulty, please see your teacher who will organise a badge for you.

Here is a link to The Star online gallery, showing some highlights of the assembly: http://www.newcastlestar.com.au/story/3724165/school-celebrates-milestone/?cs=1283 I would finally like to thank Kyzac Powder Coating for their generosity in restor-ing our bell so magnificently and to Khye and Zac, Jason Thoroughgood and How-ard Pont for using all their muscles to position it back where it belongs. I hope students will respect this area with its new hedge of Aussie Box Westringias so that the bell and its surrounds will continue to look fabulous.

The PBL Corner Students at Edgeworth Public School have settled into a new school year and are ready to continue their work in demonstrating our three school values – Respect, Responsibility and Learning. Students have already begun collecting Ronowldo tickets for displaying such values in both the playground and classroom. Students have been involved in weekly lessons in class where they learn about how respect, responsibility and learning is reflected by their choices. Students will be rewarded with a Ronowldo throughout the school day for demonstrating the weekly focus and these tokens are used by students for the rewards menu. These menus are displayed in class-rooms and around the school. The menu will operate for the entire term however there will be a rewards day each 5 weeks. Students are responsible for storing their tokens and no responsibility will be placed on the school for monitoring these tokens. This includes replacing lost or damaged tokens accidentally taken home. The EPS PBL team have created an exciting menu for term 1!

Update for all schools using On Line Payment I am pleased to advise that POP is now user friendly on mobile devices. Behind the scenes Westpac has been working on an upgrade of the Parent Online Payment webpage attached to the school’s website. In the past using the ‘$ Make a Payment’ through a mobile device or tablet has not been as easy as on a computer. Now, automatically, as parents click on this page, via a mobile device, they will be able to complete the online form with ease.

Congratulations Kindergarten on a fantastic start to your learning journey. What an exciting and busy start it has been over the past 2 weeks. This term, Kindergarten students will be introduced to the alphabet and start to identify that every letter makes its own special sound. Students have 5 new sight words weekly that are taught in the classroom and supported with the completion of homework. We have also started our count to 100 days of school. Each day Kindergarten learn a new number and see the many ways we can represent that number i.e., numeral, word, tally, tens frame and place value. Once students have counted to 100, we celebrate the amazing milestone by having a ‘100 days of school’ party. Students will be asked to bring 100 of ‘something’ for example; marbles, shells, straws, to support them in playing many counting games on the day. Crunch and Sip Don’t forget to pack a piece of fruit and a bottle of water for your child to enjoy during our morning routine of crunch and sip. We encourage healthy food choices for your child’s lunch box where possible. If you would like ideas for healthy options please speak to your classroom teacher. Fete Update Thank you to those families who have already generously donated small prizes suitable for a ‘lucky dip’ to support

the ES1 stall at the Fete on February 27. We still encourage families to donate if possible. Please pass onto your

child’s classroom teacher by Monday 22 February.

Book Packs Teachers are using the books and online programs in class so we would ask that any outstanding book pack pay-ments please be finalised as soon as possible Stage 1 assembly Stage 1 hold a weekly assembly on Thursdays at 2:40 pm in the hall. Parents are most welcome to attend. Council Library Visits All stage one classes will be visiting the Council Library once a fortnight. A note will be sent home by class teachers with date of days and times. Please return the permission slip if you would like your child to attend. Parent Information Afternoon Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Parent Information Afternoon last Tuesday. It was great to meet so many new faces, and we appreciate you taking the time to attend. EPS Fete – Saturday February 27 With our exciting fete coming up on February 27, we are looking for parent helpers with our Stage stalls on the day. Stage 2 will be running a juggling ball stall and a mystery car stall. Any parents who can help out, no matter how long or short the time, can you please let your child’s teacher know. Book Packs Please keep payments for book packs coming in. Swimming Carnival Congratulations to all of the Stage 2 students on both your efforts and your behaviour at our Swimming Carnival last week. This will provide time for you to discuss your child’s progress during these interviews. Book Packs Just a reminder that book pack money is now due. It is important that children receive these book packs as it pro-vides them with the resources used in the classroom. Please don’t hesitate to contact the office if financial support is needed. Edgeworth Public School Student Representative Council (SRC) Congratulations to all the students who have been elected in leadership roles for 2016. The SRC consists of the School Captains, School Prefects and class representatives (Years 3-6) – see list below. Class SRC representatives will receive their leadership badges at the Whole School Assembly on Friday 26 February.

This week we had our first SRC meeting and it was wonderful to see how enthusiastic all the student leaders were to be involved in different school initiatives. The SRC is divided into two committees –Environmental and Fundrais-ing/Charities. I look forward to observing all the positive changes the student leaders bring to Edgeworth Public School. Sweetheart Day Fundraiser – HeartKids NSW The SRC have registered the school to participate in the HeartKids NSW Sweetheart Day to raise money for children with childhood heart disease. All students are invited to wear a splash of red (out of uniform) to school on Wednesday 24 February and donate a gold coin; all money raised goes straight to HeartKids NSW. We look for-ward to seeing Edgeworth P.S splashed in red on Wednesday 24 February to support a great cause.

Cupcake Day Fundraiser The SRC have organised a Cupcake Day fundraiser which will take place on 7 days throughout the year. All Stage 2 and Stage 3 classes will be involved in hosting a cupcake stall. Please see the timetable below. More information will be provided closer to each date.

Please help support HeartKids NSW by participating in our Sweetheart Day Campaign this February!

We will be dressing in a “splash of red” on Wednesday 24 February to help HeartKids NSW raise funds for children

with childhood heart disease – the greatest killer of Australian children under 1.

So please remember to send your child to school in with their gold coin on that day.

Thanks for your support, it will help our school make a real difference!

Ring Pull Collection The SRC are asking all school community members to continue to collect ring pulls and send them into school to raise money for charity. The ring pulls will be cashed in to raise money for the Newcastle Ronald McDonald House. Each classroom has bag to collect their ring pulls in. On Tuesday 5 April (Week 11, Term 1), we will be conducting a ring pull collection from each class. We will weigh the amount of ring pulls each class has collected to determine which class has col-lected the most. Students in the winning class will each get a delicious iceblock.
