From%Her%Hear)%to%Yours,%Our%PTO%President,

hope that you and your families had a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving. Here is a recap of our November events

and a preview of the busy and fun month of December…

The Race for Education Walk-a-thon was so much fun! Our Edgewood athletes and staff ran, jogged, played games, and walked for a full hour on November 19th. What a great way to cap off our fabulous fall fundraiser. Thanks to Mr. Gallo for designing and setting up the course and games. We are so pleased with the results of our fall fundraiser – raising over $35,000 was well beyond our goal and it will allow us to do some really great things for Edgewood. A huge thank you to Susan Santella and her team of volunteers including Becky Bewtra, Corinne Rossi and the rest of the PTO Board. This was an incredible undertaking and we couldn’t have done without the support of Mrs. Spack, our teachers, and parents. Thank you!

I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks.

~William Shakespeare

Thank you to everyone who participated in Student Council’s sponsored Crazy Hat Day for the Red Cross and Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive. The Children’s Home Society in Trenton truly appreciates and relies on our Thanksgiving food donations. We thanked our teachers for hosting Classroom Visitation Day and Parent/Teacher Conferences with a special breakfast. Thank you to our local Cub Scouts for their Edgewood Clean Up Day – what a great job! The grounds are super tidy, especially after the storm. Thank you to everyone who supported the 5th Grade through your Clean Out Your Closets donations.

The students have much to look forward to this month with the Holiday Shop, our Seymour Simon, Guest Author Visit, our Holiday Sing, and Winter Parties. What fun!

Our wonderful Holiday Shop is in full swing. Don’t forget to send your child with the Holiday Shop envelope filled in with who they are shopping for and their budget. This makes it much easier for the parent volunteers to help our Edgewood shoppers find the perfect gifts! Make sure you check out the After Sale on Friday afternoon. It’s open to all Edgewood families and staff. We always have a great selection of leftover items as well as Spirit Wear. This is a great opportunity for older siblings to purchase gifts for friends and family. Thank you to our awesome Holiday Shop Committee led by Traci Curtis – the Holiday Shop is a huge, year-long undertaking and a true labor of love!

Looking for a way to support some local families in need this holiday season? Mrs. Grillone is again organizing the Edgewood Giving Tree. If you would like to participate by purchasing an item (approximate value of $20.00) for a child, please complete the form and return it to the Health Office by December 7th. Wrapped gifts are due to the Health Office by December 14th.

I hope you have participated in Edgewood’s Gift Card Program – if not, we’ve got ONE more Gift Card order date in December. Take advantage of getting all of your gift cards in one place – no running around to pick them up. Orders are due by 12/11 for 12/18 delivery. We have access to 100’s of retailers including American Express with no activation fee. Check out the retailer list on EFlyers.

Get those cookie sheets ready! We have a few volunteer spots left for our Staff Appreciation Holiday Cookie Trays. Sign ups are open on Sign-Up Genius. Thanks to those who have already volunteered. We are happy to continue this great Edgewood tradition of providing cookie trays to our teachers, aids, administrative assistants, cafeteria staff, crossing guards, and custodial staff.

Have a joyous and safe December.

Our second PTO Meeting of the year will be on Wednesday, December 12th at 9:30am in M4. We continue to vary the day and time of our meetings to accommodate as many parents as possible.

Our meeting will include a Holiday Breakfast! Please join us as we will be discussing our plans for the rest of the year along with some great volunteering opportunities. Come see what the PTO is all about and meet some great people. Take a break from your daily schedule and bring your friends - the more the merrier! We’d love to see some new faces. Children are welcome.

Additionally, our Student Council Officers will be presenting a $400 check to the LMT Police Department for the DARE Program. This is money the PTO has set aside from the Race for Education Walk-a-thon for this worthy cause.

month in Kindergarten. We

celebrated all the things we are thankful for

by making crafts, writing stories and

reading books about Thanksgiving. We have

learned so many new things and enjoyed

sharing our school day with the many

S e c o n d g r a d e students are having a ball this fall! They

have  enjoyed writing creative scarecrow stories, and everyone had a great time exercising during the

Race for Education.  After learning about the first Americans, the children  ended the month  by sharing  a fun Thanksgiving feast with friends dressed in pilgrim and American Indian attire.

As a culminating activity to our "Good Citizens" Unit, Level 3 students

will be sharing their Paper Bag Book Reports with the community. We will be attaching our book reports to Stony Hill Giant Supermarket bags with a postal card so customers can write back to our students and let them know how much they enjoyed reading their book reports.

Although November was a short month, 4th graders were busy. We

started November off by participating in the annual mock Presidential Election. Besides voting, 4th graders learned about the Electoral College and the election process. In 8 years many kids will be eligible to vote in the 2020 election! Yikes! Fourth graders also enjoyed creative writing activities which focused on the

Thanksgiving holiday. We had a lot of fun participating in the Race for Education and supporting our Student Council with providing Thanksgiving meals to the needy.

F i f t h l e v e l m a t h students were hard at work learning

what their family members go t h r o u g h w h e n p l a n n i n g , budgeting, and creating a well b a l a n c e d T h a n k s g i v i n g meal. The students objective was to look through grocery flyers a n d p l a n a Thanksgiving  dinner for a family of five.  However, they had to work within the budget of $50.00.  The students used their knowledge of adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals to appropriately plan their meal.  The culminating event was that each group had to present their meal total and their colorful poster to the other students. Every group managed to stay in budget and now have a n a p p r e c i a t i o n f o r t h e budgeting and planning for Thanksgiving.  Just wait until they actually have to cook!

Mrs. KimockMusic Teacher

I am delighted to announce that 5 dedicated members of our 5th grade class auditioned and were accepted to sing in a national children’s choir in March 2013. Walker Bearce, Emelie Curtis, Allison Schaeffer, Jacob Umbro and Madison Wilson were chosen out of many students nation-wide to participate in the OAKE National Conference Children’s Choir. This choir, part of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, will perform in Hartford, CT. during its National Conference in March. They will experience three days of rehearsals with a world-renowned music educator/conductor, concluding with a concert at The First Cathedral on March 23. These students will have many enriching musical experiences, while having the chance to meet and sing with students nationwide. I am so proud of their accomplishments and hope you will join me in congratulating them. Be on the lookout for ways to help support these Edgewood students with upcoming fundraisers!

Thank you Edgewood community for helping to make this year's book fair such a huge success. Together, we earned $3,349.42 which the PTO will use to help fund many of the great programs they provide for our school! I also want to thank all of the parents and teachers who volunteered and helped to make our book fair a huge success. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Schlosberg for all of the help and time that she generously provides each year at the fair! Our Rai$e for Reading competition was also a huge success! We raised $1477.21 through our classroom contest. This money will be used by Scholastic to donate books to charities that support underprivileged schools and children. In addition, we were able to purchase $1477.21 worth of books for Edgewood's library which our students have already begun to enjoy and read. Be sure to check out the picture below that shows just how many new books we added to our library! Thanks, Shawna Curran

Extending thanks to all students, families, and teachers who continue to submit their Box Tops. We are making progress toward our goal and have been able to submit over 5,000 Box Tops thus far, which will translate into $514.20 of funds for Edgewood, and this is just the beginning!

Looking forward to counting those Turkey Time collection sheets that have come through in November. No worries if you are participating in Box Tops collecting and have not sent in the sheet or loose Box Tops yet – you still have time! We are collecting through to the end of December 2012 for this first session. A December collection sheet stating “Box Tops Really Add Up” has been attached for everyone’s convenience. To see how things have really added up by class, happy to report that all classrooms are advancing toward the pizza/ice cream party for this first session. The following 5 classrooms are currently in the lead: Mr. Bloom’s (Grade 3); Mrs. Wiegand’s (Grade 2); Mrs. Schmidt’s/Mrs. Jones (Grade 3); Mrs. Cattani’s (Grade 4); and Mrs. Hayes (Grade 2 ) . Le t ' s keep submitting Box Tops for this first session and we will then see which class will actually be celebrating Box Tops bliss!

The Classifieds Thanks for being great fundraisers to help the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.  To date, Edgewood raised close to $1,000, which is especially generous given how many fundraisers were happening at once.  Thanks for helping to find cures and treat these very special children.   Last minute donations can still be submitted to Mrs. Axler, and Math-a-Thon funbooks are always accepted for review and recognition.

Enrichment

Edgewood is looking good! A number of students and parents have been busy working to keep our school looking its finest. Thank you to all of the scouts and parents who turned out for Cub Scout Clean Up Day on Saturday, November 17. They did a fantastic job raking and cleaning up the grounds in the front of the school! Also, many thanks to Brownie Troop #21124 and Daisy Troop #21541 for planting mums and bulbs for everyone to enjoy as they walk into school.

With the Winter Break at the end of the this month, now is a great time to start thinking about the 2013 Science Fair. Each year hundreds of students present a wide range of topics. A science fair project is a great way to allow your child to design his or her own learning experience: one that allows him or her to innovate, just as scientists do in the real world. Many of the skills used during project planning, development, and presentation extend above and beyond science proficiency. Students can explore personal interests, as well as learn the scientific method to answer a question. The Science Fair Committee hopes to promote the use of the scientific method. We will provide diagrams and worksheets aimed at elementary students on our PTO website as well as having our parent scientists visit the classrooms to discuss how they use the scientific method in the work.

The Steps of the Scientific Method:

Ask a Question: The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe or notice: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where? In order for the scientific method to answer your question it must be about something that you can measure, preferably with a number.

Do Background Research: Rather than starting from scratch, you want to use library and Internet research to better understand your topic.

Construct a Hypothesis: A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work. Your hypothesis should be constructed in a way to help answer your original question.

Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment: Your experiment should test whether your hypothesis is true or false. It is best to repeat experiments several times to make sure that the first results weren't just an accident.

Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion: Once your experiment is complete, you collect your measurements and analyze them to see if your hypothesis is true or false. Scientists often find that their hypothesis was false, and in such cases they will construct a new hypothesis starting the entire process of the scientific method over again. Even if they find that their hypothesis was true, they may want to test it again in a new way.

Communicate Your Results: To complete your science fair project you will present your results at the science fair. Professional scientists do almost exactly the same thing by publishing their final report in a scientific journal or by presenting their results on a poster at a scientific meeting.

Students have a wide range of interests. While some interests may appear to lend themselves better to science fair projects than others, there are so many possibilities that your child is sure to find a project topic about which he or she is excited. This enthusiasm are what drive great projects, new insights, and innovative discoveries!

Useful Resources: There is a wealth of information available to help with science projects. Visit the Science Fair Resources section of the Edgewood PTO website (http://209.18.101.212/pennsbury/Edgewood/PTO/Site%20Map/Science%20Fair%20Resources/) or the library for useful information.

Science Buddies (sciencebuddies.org) offers an interactive questionnaire to help science fair participants narrow their area of interest. You can access this Topic Selection Wizard from the Project Ideas tab at the top of their web page. Have your children give it a try!

Contact Information: If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help with this year's Science Fair please contact Beth Brunette at [email protected] or Maureen Graham at [email protected] . The committee would also like to recognize sciencebuddies.org for helping provide resources for the above information.

Reading Olympics T-Shirt SponsorReading Olympics is on its way.  We have 48 students enrolled and are planning to send four teams in March.  We are still offering a great opportunity to advertise someone's business.  Reading Olympics is looking for a sponsor for their T-shirts, which is a repeatedly walking advertisement on about 60 people at a tax-deductible cost of ~$600.  This inexpensive opportunity also comes with the gratitude and excitement of dozens of 4th and 5th graders.  Contact Mrs. Axler soon if you have a business that wants to be appreciated and recognized.
