Dates For Your Diary From the Principal Term 4 is rapidly passing by. The next five weeks are packed with activities across all year levels. Swimming lessons for students in Pre-Primary to Year 6 will commence on Monday 21 and during next week the new 2017 Kindergarten students will visit our Early Childhood classrooms to become familiar with the environment and our terrific staff. Year 6 students have recently been involved in transition to high school activities and are now preparing for their graduation from primary school. STUDENT PERFORMANCE 2016 On Friday 4 November staff came together to examine student performance data over the past 12 months comparing it with previous years, WA and like schools, and most importantly against our Business Plan targets. This type of examination goes on throughout the year but becomes a key focus as we plan for 2017. One of our parent school board members, Rebecca Wright, joined us for the morning and found the experience valuable in terms of gaining an insight into the processes undertaken by staff to deliver quality learning opportunities for our students. We made noted progress in the in the areas of spelling, punctuation and grammar. However, there is still room for improvement in reading comprehension and writing narratives. In the Mathematics learning area, students performed very well in basic number facts. We will need to continue to work on improving students understanding and interpretation of written Mathematics problems. Further discussion about our progress will occur at the last School Board meeting of the year on Monday 21 November. The aim is always to celebrate successes and strive for continuing improvement in student achievement. During Term 1 2017 the Edgewater Primary School Annual Report for 2016 will be published and made available to parents through the school website. The report details our progress over time and planning for the future. SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM 2017-2018 I am very pleased to report that our school has been successful in securing funding to continue with in-school chaplaincy services for our students. The funding was sourced through the state and national governments. Lisa Ingham, our School Chaplain, will continue to support our students into 2017. This is great news for all those who know the valuable work Lisa carries out in our school. Lisa is not a teacher or a counsellor; she is a parent and caring adult who is committed to the positive wellbeing of our students. Students can talk to her if they feeling lonely or need help negotiating the school day. Lisa works in partnership with parents and staff to foster a healthy self esteem in our students and sound relationships. She has successfully implemented a number of innovative and supportive programs this year. These will be reported in our next school newsletter. Lisa is available to support all families and can be contacted through the school office. Julie Tombs

Digital Technologies Enrichment Course We have engaged Miss Smith to design and present an enrichment programme with identified students from Years 2 to 5. These small groups will spend an hour each week until Week 9 on activities that challenge their problem-solving and collaborative skills using small autonomous programmable robots called Ozobots. The school purchased eight of these amazing pieces of technology that can be controlled with OzoCodes by simply drawing lines and colour segments as well using a visual block-based editor called OzoBlockly.

School Development Days 2017 TERM 1 - Friday 3 March (Labour Day long weekend) TERM 2 - Friday 19 May TERM 4 - Monday 30 October Staff will also meet in the two days prior to students commencing at the beginning of the 2017 school year. Students commence on Wednesday 1st February and at the end of the year students finish on Thursday 14 December 2017.

Kindergarten Sports Day Last Wednesday all our Kindergarten students were given the opportunity to participate in the annual Kindergarten Sports Day. They had lots of fun joining in all the different team games. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and positive sportsmanship demonstrated by everyone. Medals and certificates, which were kindly donated by the Edgewater Primary School P&C, were awarded to each student. Thank you to all the families and friends who came along and supported their children. A successful and fantastic morning was had by all! Ann Rose & Aimie Norris—Kindergarten Teachers

P&C Disco A flyer was sent home earlier this week reminding parents and students of the P&C Disco to be held on Friday 18 November in the Undercover area. Parents are asked to help at the Disco (information and tear-off-slip included on the back of the note). Entry is $5 which includes a Glow Stick. Kindergarten to Year 2 4:30-6:00pm / Years 1 to 6 6:15-7:30pm.

From the School Board Welcome everyone to Term 4 and the final newsletter from the School Board for 2016.

The board continues to work on the delivery of the strategic plan and has been engaged with the Principal and staff on bringing it up to date and checking that we are on track for delivery by the end of 2017.

From our last vacancy, as Larissa has left the Board, we now have a new Board member and we welcome Leah Beltran to the team. Leah is a parent representative and is keen to see the School Board help with our children’s and the school’s development. She will be working on the Communications and Marketing portfolio, dealing with items such as the communications plans and strategies. With the school we are involved in the development of other plans to help ensure we all work in partnership and undertake our roles consistently.

We have now assigned members of the board to specific portfolios to help with school and board developments to continue Edgewater PS development as an IPS. The portfolios are listed below and we will be looking to provide more information about these in the future.

In the New Year we will be holding our annual ‘open’ board meeting, with details to come early in 2017.

I would be interested to know what parents/carers would like to see the School Board updating you on. Please feel free to drop me a line on the school email ([email protected]) and mark it for my attention. Also, if you have an interest in becoming a member of the School Board please feel free to contact myself or Julie Tombs and we will try and answer your questions or provide you with the right information.

As this is my last newsletter before the festive period and summer break, I would like to wish you all the very best for the festive season and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Simon Young—School Board Chair

From the Manager Corporate Services On one morning during the last week, I processed money for 27 students whose parents/carers paid online. I know that teachers are very grateful for this as it is less stress in not having to handle money at the beginning of the school day. If you are not paying online can I please encourage you to do so? Our details have changed a little bit with the closure of the Beldon ANZ bank; they are now are as follows: BSB 016494 Account 340968448. If you still use the old BSB, the bank has assured me that it will still go into our account. Once you have processed the payment please remember to email me so I can confirm the money has arrived into our account. In order to reduce financial stress for parents/carers I encourage parents to put money into their child’s school accounts, thus creating a credit. This money carries over from one year to the next and if there is a credit in one child’s account when they finish at school, then the money is transferred into their siblings’ account. Parents/carers of 2017 Year 6 students who will be here next year can start putting away money for the school camp which will be held in early March. The approximate cost will be $400 per student. Kathy Dean—Manager Corporate Services

From the Canteen Meet my helper for the next two weeks - Lilly Hellmuth. Lilly is a Year 11 student from Belridge Secondary College and she is assisting in the canteen as part of a work experience program. Lilly has already proved herself to be a very hard worker and I'm very happy to have her helping me out. Please make her feel welcome and, should you get the chance, please come and say hello to her. As you are aware the P&C are putting on a disco for students on Friday 18 November. We will need parent help on the night in various areas, i.e supervising in the undercover area, manning the BBQ and serving in the canteen (which will be selling treats, ice creams and drinks). Please consider helping out in one of these areas while your child is dancing the night away. Kerry van Drunick—Canteen Manager

In-Term Swimming Pre-primary to Year 6 In-term Swimming notes and Enrolment Forms were sent home this week. Please read the note carefully, complete the Enrolment Form and return it to the class teacher with the money unless you are paying online. Lessons commence on Monday 21 November to Friday 2 December (Week 7). If you having difficulties with the payments, please contact our Manager Corporate Services who will help you out.

School Uniforms Notes were sent home this week with a new promotion that is offering just a $20 deposit to secure school uniform requirements with a layby facility. It can be very expensive over the Christmas/New Year period, so by paying a small deposit now it means that at least families can visit the uniform shop and be fitted in readiness for the new school year. Uniform Concepts are also trying to encourage families to visit the uniform shop before the Christmas break to alleviate the long queues and last minute purchases at the end of January, helping to manage the flow at this busy time.
