    Chocolate Whores and Chocolate Wars

Although gold and silver were historically the great treasures of the New World for theSpaniards, truth be told, the real prize was the mysterious cacao bean. This bean and all itsderivative products have influenced a large part of our society ever since Cortez depositedthe first small cache into the hands of monks in 1528. The monasteries kept the formula formaking the strong and bitter chocolate drink a secret which only the very rich could affordto experience. Cortez, always with an eye to the main chance, saw greater opportunity; heestablished a cacao plantation and began to ship commercially grown beans back to Spainby 1585.

Fortunately for us, a Spanish princess married the king of France and introduced chocolatedrinking to the French court in the early 1600s. Along with other New World experienceslike tobacco, coffee and venereal disease, cocoa was about to change western culture. By1660 people outside the royal court had the opportunity to indulge their curiosity for thedrink in chocolate houses. The rise of the English middle class and the growth of the popu-larity of chocolate run on parallel lines. Chocolate confections, known as pralines, weresoon created in Germany and by 1674 a London coffeehouse was selling the first solidchocolate in stick form.

Chocolate arrived in Vienna in the early 1700s and quickly invaded Italy. Everywhere, entrepreneurs were adapting ways to grind the beans and make chocolate paste morecheaply and effectively. By 1764, the Baker Chocolate Company was established in theUnited States. And by the end of the century, J. S. Fry & Sons were using steam power togrind cacao beans for the first time in England. What a riotous journey the little bean had

taken in its conquest of the west. Napoleon must have been envious. However, the real storyof money and chocolate was just beginning.

In the early 19th century the Quakers became seriously interested in chocolate drinkingwhich they promoted as being healthier than alcohol. At that time the Quakers were the epit-ome of the newly successful Protestant business class. Cadbury and Frys quickly domi-nated the English chocolate scene. While they are trying to convince people to buy theirbitter little chocolate bars, the Swiss are revolutionizing the industry by inventing milkchocolate. Its a big commercial hit which continues to be refined over the following dec-ades. And, notably, in 1861 Richard Cadbury creates the first heart-shaped candy box forValentines Day. Chocolate candy was about to go big league.

When is the right time to invest?Youve managed to put aside a little extra cash or youre expecting anice tax refund and wondering what to do with the money. Yourethinking about investing it maybe in your Registered Retirement Sav-ings Plan or by purchasing a few shares of this or that to add to yournon-registered portfolio. But youre hesitating markets are volatile

right now. Is it better to wait? When is the best time to invest?

The answer is: Make your investment as soon as possible. Heres why:

Most seasoned investment professionals will tell you that it is almost impossible to timethe market. They will also tell you that time in the market is much more valuable than at-tempting to time the market.

Markets move up and down but the historic trend is up so staying true to a long-term

investment strategy delivers far higher returns than jumping in and out of the market. The best long-term strategy for most investors is to make your investments immedi-

ately even if the market is at its lowest point of the year and, even better, try to in-vest regularly instead of holding off and making a lump sum investment once a year.

When you invest regularly, you accomplish three important investment goals:o You take full advantage of dollar cost averaging meaning you make

your investment purchases (either in non-registered stocks or by acquiring more unitsin your RRSP) whether the price is lower or higher and, over time, this results ina reduction in the average cost of your investments while improving the potentialfor longer-term returns.

o You maximize the benefits of your RRSP. Your money grows tax-deferred insideyour RRSP so regular contributions and the magic of compounding can add thousands toyour retirement nest-egg. For example, if you contribute $200 dollars a month to yourRRSP (at an average compounding annual return of 8%) after 25 years you will have$190,205. But if you make a single lump sum contribution each year, you will have only$175,454 in 25 years.

o Its much easier to come up with $100-200 each month (say through a Pre-AuthorizedContribution PAC plan) than finding a lump sum to invest once a year.

A regular and balanced investment strategy will ensure you achieve your financial goals.Your professional advisor can help you set up an investment plan that fits your budget anddreams.

Laurel Schuett, 405 Red Coat Drive, Eastend, SK Ph: (306) 295-4060Synopsis ofThe Time Travelers Wife

Based on the best-selling 2003 novel byAudrey Niffenegger about a love that tran-scends time. Clare (Rachel McAdams)has been in love with Henry her entire life. She believes they are destined to be to-gether, even though she never knows whenthey will be separated: Henry (Eric Bana)is a time traveler cursed with a rare geneticanomaly that causes him to life his life ona shifting timeline, skipping back and forththrough his lifespan with no control. De-spite the fact that Henrys travels forcethem apart with no warning, Clare desper-

ately tries to build a life with her one truelove.

The novel was alternately lovely, funny, romantic and poignant. This 2009 filmdoes it justice and captures the trauma ofbeing hijacked without warning out ofones daily life. But, love does transcendsall.

This could be called a Chick Flickbut thecuriosity of the story skirts around that. Itmakes an enjoyable evening and pulls atyour heart a little.

If you want to score some points with yourValentine, and have already bought hertickets to Extreme Bull Riding, this filmmight give you the key to her heart. JK

The Year of the Golden Tiger

Courageous, active, and self-assured. Optimistic, passionate and independ-ent. Rebellious, dynamic, and unpredictable. Quick tempered but consider-ate. Affectionate but careless. The Tiger is a natural born leader and symbol-izes power, passion and daring.

People born in the Year of the Tiger are generally well liked because of theircharming personalities. Often, failing at a given task or being unproductive inhis personal or professional life can cause a Tiger to experience a deep depres-sion. Criticism from loved ones can also generate this type of Tiger reaction.

Tigers are fond of competitions. They simply cannot pass up a chal-lenge. They may appear cool and are unpredictable, and it would be unwise tounderestimate their reactions. Natural leaders, they have a strong sense oftheir own dignity. They are intelligent, alert, and farsighted. Good strategistsand tacticians, they often have a hidden agenda. As long as they do not risk

their luck too often, and keep their restless nature under control, they will enjoy success and happiness.

People born in the Year of the Tiger are straightforward and uninhibited in nature. They will never give up no matter how frustrated theymay become. But, they are also full of suspicion and sometimes will take hasty action.

They must be aware of how they react to and are affected by the consequences of their tempers. They should take it a little easier andlearn to pace themselves to keep active longer and to prevent early burnout. They are blessed with flexibility and often recover quicklyfrom illness or pain.

Some people born in the Year of the Tiger are gentle and full of sympathy. They are kind, love babies and anything that arouses theirimagination. Others can be stubborn and selfish. Generally speaking, people born in the Year of the Tiger are fond of playing, and full ofenthusiasm and sentiment. Some are mercurial. They can laugh happily one moment, and cry the next. They will be optimistic, but at

the next they will lose their heart totally.

People born in the Year of the Tiger take pride in being different than others, and generally illustrate their originality best in theirhomes. Their homes are usually filled with exotic treasures. They are fast learners, need challenge and often work alone. Some tend tochange careers more often because they get bored easily. They are natural born leaders and perform best if working towards positions ofpower and influence. They like to spend money, and also to share it. They can be quite impulsive spenders because they know they canalways make more.

It is interesting that their two main features are rashness and hesitation, a pair of contradictions. If they know how to relax and do thingsaccording to the situation, they can become quite successful.

    HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR

Manufacturers know that chocolate sells best throughout theyear in colder climates. Thats why Bernard Callebaut choseCalgary as his starting base when he immigrated from Belgiumwhere his family had been chocolate suppliers to GodivaChocolates.

The history of commercial chocolate is a marketing war zone. But what has this to do with Valentines Day, you ask. Thefact is that the manufacturers focused on that date to promotechocolate because there was no other holiday between Christ-

mas and Easter and left over Christmas chocolates needed tobe cleared out of inventory to make way for spring production. And me, well, Im just a willing pawn in the chocolate wars.JK

    pg.1

Tobler and Nestle were the kings of chocolate in Switzerland butmuch of the equipment was German-made. At a demonstration of thismachinery at the 1893 Worlds Colombian Exposition in Chicago asmall time candy maker named Milton Hershey quickly saw its po-tential. By the next year Hershey had created his first candy bar andchocolate coatings for caramels. The saying is, To live with theclasses, sell to the masses; by the end of the 1800s consumption ofchocolate had reached beyond 160 million pounds a year and Hersheywas the dominant force in the US.

In 1900 Hershey introduced the Milk Chocolate Bar and in 1907 Her-shey Kisses hit the market. Tobler developed the distinctive triangularnougat filled bar and Hershey followed in 1908 with the first milkchocolate bar with almonds. In 1911 Frank and Ethel Mars built acandy company in Washington that would grow to later become thegiant Mars, Inc.

Competition in the chocolate industry was ferocious in the 20 th cen-tury. Frys merged with Cadbury, Bakers Chocolate Company wasbought by General Foods, Cadbury merged with Schweppes, Toblermerged with Suchard and Campbell Soup Company bought GodivaChocolatier, Inc. of Belgium. Every major candy bar that we grew upwith came to market. Chocolate bars were shipped in food packagesto soldiers in WWII and Hershey heat-resistant bars went to soldiers

in the Gulf War, Desert Storm. Beyond chocolate, Mars made a sec-ondary fortune by inventing to candy coating that covers bitter tastingmedications.
