Over 35 species of butterfly have been identified in the garden, making it a great place to view and photograph the different species. A butterfly species checklist is available at the visitor’s center. Picnic Pavilions and Playgrounds There are three picnic shelters located near the marina. Each shelter has approximately nine picnic tables and can accommodate up to 50 people. A huge fireplace, with side grilling grates, is located in each pavilion, along with electricity and water. Reservations can be made online. A playground is located in the campground. Many individual picnic tables can be found near the marina and the launch ramps. Amphitheater A small fire circle is adjacent to the campground, It seats approximately 35 people.

Edgar Evins State Park is located on theshores of Center Hill Lake in the steep, hillyEastern Highland Rim. The 6,292 acre park provides many recreational opportunities and accommodations on one of the most beautifulreservoirs in Tennessee.

Wildlife is abundant and includes three differentowl species, numerous hawks and wintering baldeagles as well as the rare Cerulean Warbler, asummer resident. An observation tower at thevisitor’s center offers a spectacular view ofCenter Hill Lake and the surrounding hillsides.

The park was dedicated in 1975 and named forJames Edgar Evins, a Dekalb County businessmanand mayor of nearby Smithville. As a two-termstate senator, Evins was instrumental in the development of the Center Hill Dam andReservoir.

CabinsThe park features 34 condo-type suiteswithin a six-building lodging complex. The suites are a split level design and can accommodate six people, with one full bath, two double beds in the bedroom and a sofa sleeper in the living room. All suiteshave a balcony, central heat and air conditioning,stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker,satellite TV, cooking and eating utensils and bedand bath linens. There is a large double-sided barbeque grill in front of each building. Pets areallowed only in our designated pet-friendly cabins and these cabins must be reserved inadvance. Cabin reservations may be made onlineor by calling the park. A swimming pool is locatedat the cabin area for our cabin guest’s use. Acourtesy boat dock, with 16 slips, is also availablefor use by our cabin guests.

BoatingThere are three boat launch ramps within thepark. Two are located on the developed side of thepark, and the third is located off of Highway 70 on Indian Creek Road. The park offers seasonal pontoon boat rides.

Marina and RestaurantEdgar Evins Marina and Restaurant is located within the state park but is privately owned and operated. The marina operates year-round with boat rentals, slip rentals,gas sales, gift shop, boat repair, fishing suppliesand information. The Galley Restaurant is openseasonally. Call the marina office for dates andhours at 931-858-5695 or 888-858-5695.

CampingThere are 60 campsites with water and electricalhookups. These platform-type sites are built aroundthe slopes of Center Hill Lake and are equipped witha table, grill and fire rings. Three modern bathhous-es, a dump station and a laundry facility are locatedwithin the campground. Pets are allowed but mustbe on a leash. Campsites will accommodate trailersup to 33 feet, with four campsites accommodatingup to 40 feet. Nine, walk-in primitive sites are available with an area for a tent and a fire ring.Approximately 20 campsites and one bathhouseare open year round. Reservations may be madeonline or by calling the park.

Meeting SpaceMeeting space is available in the campgroundbuilding. This room seats 30 people with tablesand chairs, and has a kitchenette, restroom and ishandicapped accessible. Call the park office at931-858-2114 for reservations.

FishingCenter Hill Lake is open for fishing year-round.Species include Largemouth, Smallmouth, andKentucky Bass, Walleye, Black Crappie, catfish(three varieties), Bluegill, and various other roughfish. A valid Tennessee fishing license is required.Bait and licenses are available at the marina.

HikingThere are approximately 12 miles of trails at EdgarEvins ranging from moderate to strenuous. Of thepark’s five trails, the longest is the eight-mile JackClayborn Millennium Trail. Registration is requiredat this trailhead. Other trails vary in length up to2.5-miles. The Highland Rim Nature Trail, locatedat the visitor center, is noted for an abundance of spring wildflowers. Backcountry camping is not permitted on the trails.

BirdingFrom spring to fall, the observation tower enables treetop-level views of abundantmixed hardwood forests with sightings of numerous songbirds, including Scarlet andSummer Tanagers. On the peninsula below thecabins, transient waterfowl may be spotted aswell as Bald Eagles and Osprey. Over 150 speciesof birds have been observed throughout the year.
