Sexism Where everyone has equal rights, no matter what their sex, race or class.

Discrimination Treating someone differently because of their race.

Prejudice Treating someone differently because of their sex, whether male or female.

Equality Judging a person to be inferior, before you know them.

Racism Putting prejudice into action – treating someone differently because you think they’re inferior based on race, sex or class.

Traditional view of Feminism sought to emancipate women in society and give them equal opportunities.

Modern view of Feminism believed that - men and women are different and have different roles, but women should have equal status to men.

What is Feminism?

Do you think we need feminism anymore?

Where do these ideas come from?

Christian attitudes tend to be based on the idea of women being child-bearers, wives and submissive companions to their husbands. The Christian approach is the Hebrew view of women as being created for the man, the property of the man, and in all sense secondary to the man.

Genesis 3:16

16 And he said to the woman, “I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth. In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will be subject to him.”

What do Christians think?Use the separate sheet and pages 104 and 105 in the textbook

Modern Protestants think that….

Men and women have equal rights and they

have women ministers and priestsBecause …

•God created men and women at the same

time and equal•Jesus treated women as equals in the gospels

Roman Catholics think that…

Men and women have equal rights and they

can have any role in the church but they can’t be

a priest or bishop.Because …

•The Catholic Catechism says men and women

are equal• Only men can be priests because the

apostles were all men

Traditional Protestants think that…

Men and women have separate and different

roles and so cannot have equal rights

Because …•St Paul says women should not speak in

church•Jesus only had male

followers
