Introduction EDEX (ELMA Data EXchange) is hardware and software infrastructure for Electricity Meter Test Equipments ELMA which enables parameterization or registers readout of connected electricity meters simultaneously (in parallel). EDEX is independent of Local Evaluation Units OPS - communication is done via optical interface of the electricity meter using OPTH communication heads connected to PC via EDEX infrastructure.

Installation

MOXA System Configuration Communication ports made by EDEX infrastructure have to be correctly installed and configured.

Configuration consists of two configuration steps:

1. Configuration of NPort devices (MOXA NPort ports settings)

2. COM Mapping (mapping COM ports to NPort devices in Windows)

First configuration step is always done by Applied Precision and customer or person installing the system has to make it only in case of some changes in EDEX infrastructure (for example MOXA Nport device replacement).

Second configuration step is done directly on PC to which the EDEX infrastructure is connected. It is therefore performed by supplier of computer (the person who configures the Windows and test bench system).

Both steps require software NPort Administrator (Suite) which has to be installed and used for performing both configuration steps.

NPort Administrator Software

Nport Administrator (Suite) is original MOXA software for configuration of MOXA NPort devices.

NPort Administrator - download link: http://www.moxa.com/support/download.aspx?d_id=1317

NPort Administrator - documentation / User’s Manual: part of user’s manuals of NPort devices available (not directly) from this link: http://www.moxa.com/product/Serial_Device_Servers.htm

On this site choose one of the devices you possess and click on it. Then click on “Manual” which is located on the right side from the picture. On the next page choose the User’s Guide of that product. Click on “Download” and open the document. Usually Chapter 6 describes the NPort Administrator software.

Configuration of NPort Devices

This configuration (typically performed by Applied Precision before shipment) consists of:

setting IP addresses of MOXA NPort devices according to EDEX IP address rule

setting type of interface of NPort ports according to EDEX interface setting rule

EDEX IP address / COM port numbering rules Applied Precision uses (recommends) following rule for setting IP addresses on NPort devices: IP address = 192.168.100.x where x = COM port number for the first port of NPort device

EDEX compatible software uses COM ports from COM11.

Typical configuration:

# Device IP Address Associated COM ports

0 Net card in PC 192.168.100.1 -

1 NPort 5650-8-DT 192.168.100.11 COM11 – COM18

2 NPort 5250A 192.168.100.19 COM19 – COM20

3 NPort 5650-8-DT 192.168.100.21 COM21 – COM28

4 NPort 5250A 192.168.100.29 COM29 – COM30

EDEX interface setting rule MOXA Nport devices enable to configure interface type of all their ports to any of these possibilities: RS-232 (default) / RS-422 / RS-485 2wire / RS-485 4wire EDEX infrastructure requires setting of all ports to type of interface RS-422.

MOXA NPort devices configuration check / change - Connect all MOXA Nport devices intended to use on test bench to Ethernet card of PC (in

case of more than 16 test bench positions use MOXA switch) - Run Nport Administrator software - Select Configuration in left Function tree - Use Search button and wait until software founds all connected MOXA Nport devices - Check whether IP addresses of found devices are in accordance with EDEX IP address rule - Check whether Interface types of all ports are in accordance with EDEX interface setting rule - Change settings if needed

MOXA NPort device IP address check / change IP address can be seen in IP Address column of Configuration part of NPort Administrator software. Change of IP address can be done using Assign IP Address from context menu of that NPort item.

MOXA NPort interface check / change Interface setting can be accessed in Serial tab of NPort Configuration window. Configuration window can be opened by double clicking Nport item in Configuration part of NPort Administrator software or using Configure item in context menu item. For check of interface setting double click table items in Serial tab and check whether Interface parameter is set to RS-422.

For change of interface setting: - Select Serial tab - Check Modify checkbox - Select all ports (click on first item, press and hold Shift key and click on last item) - Press Settings button - Change all parameters in Serial Settings window according to the picture below - Press OK button twice

COM Mapping

This configuration can be done only when previous step (Configuration of MOXA NPort devices) was done and all NPort devices have correct IP addresses and Interface settings.

COM mapping can be done in COM Mapping function in Nport Administrator software and has to be done according to EDEX IP address / COM port numbering rules.

Quickest way for COM mapping / remapping:

- Select COM Mapping function in NPort Administrator

- Remove all items if some are already defined (using Remove and Apply button)

- Click Add button and confirm selection of all available NPort devices

- Sort items by IP Address ascending (from lowest to highest) and all ports within one IP

address are also ascending (from lowest to highest) using these two steps:

Sort table items by Port (click to Port column header)

Sort table items by IP Address (click to IP Address column header)

- Select all items (shortcut Ctrl+A can be used)

- Press Configure button

- In COM Port Settings window set COM Number parameter to COM 111

- Check Auto enumerating COM number for selected ports checkbox

- Confirm by OK button

- Press Apply button

- Select items by COM Port (click to COM Port column header)

- Select all items (shortcut Ctrl+A can be used)

- Press Configure button

- In COM Port Settings window set COM Number parameter to COM 11

- Check Auto enumerating COM number for selected ports checkbox

- Confirm by OK button

- Press Apply button

Desired state is: COM ports numbered from COM11 ascending through all ports sorted by IP Address & Port No.

Special setting

Some special communication modes (especially DLMS communication) require also one setting.

In COM Mapping function in NPort Administrator:

- Select all items (shortcut Ctrl+A can be used)

- Press Configure button

- In COM Port Settings window select second tab Advanced Settings

- Check Fast flush (only flush local buffer) checkbox

- Confirm by OK button

- Press Apply button

Net Card Integral part of EDEX infrastructure is Ethernet card for creating second Ethernet interface in desktop PC used for controlling of test bench. Second Ethernet interface separates the MOXA network from standard (company / internet) network. Default type of Net Card supplied with EDEX is PCI-Express but it can be changed to PCI on request.

For installing Net Card into PC use driver and installation instructions supplied with the card. After installing Net Card set its fixed IP address to: 192.168.100.1

Usage EDEX HW and SW infrastructure enables parallel (simultaneous) readout and parameterization of electricity meters. COM ports created (mapped) in Windows can be used by any communication utility - supplied by Applied Precision or by third party company (typically meter manufacturer). Communication utilities supplied by Applied Precision are:

Readout_Flag … for parallel readout according Flag protocol (IEC 62056-21)

Write_Flag … for parallel read/write parameterization of electricity meters

special versions (ENEL_Flag, ZPA_Flag etc.) … made especially to support some meters

Above communication utilities are prepared for parallel (simultaneous) communication with meters and all are stored in subdirectories of ELMA software installation directory. ELMA Meter Test Systems are using OPTH communication heads for communication with meters:

Old EDEX (USB comm. channel via D-LINK hubs) uses OPTH 2000 (USB connector)

New EDEX (Ethernet communication via MOXA devices) uses OPTH 1000 (RJ connector) Advantage of OPTH 1000 is that same communication heads can be used also directly with OPS units (connected to OPTH connector) for serial (one by one) communication. This enables to upgrade any test bench without parallel communication with EDEX without need to change OPTH heads. For more details of EDEX usage and its configuration in ELMA Control Software refer to ELMA Control Software User’s Guide - newest version is available from link: http://www.appliedp.com/download/manual/elmasw_ug_en.pdf
