This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn to distinguish between wants and needs. Students will also learn to identify that because money is limited, they will have to make choices about their needs and wants. The lesson uses inspiration from the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook “Neighborhoods” (p. 160-161) and Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies: 25 Strategies for K-8 Inquiry-Based Learning textbook (p. 159-163).

Currency (US.& other), Magnifying glasses, Copies of Class Currency, Copies of illustration worksheet, T-
Charts, Needs/Wants worksheet (1 per student), Copies of Needs sign, Wants sign, and choice scenario (1 per table
group).
Make sure to have class store set up prior to unit.

This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn to explain what producers and consumers do. Students will also learn to give examples of how people learn income to earn income to buy what they need and want. The lesson uses inspiration from the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook “Neighborhoods” (p. 166-169).
