During this lesson, students will be introduced to a variety of maps and navigational tools with a guest speaker, and then students will create a map of their own. This lesson uses the Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies textbook “Developing Map Skills” (p. 50-51).

G5.1.2 Describe maps as representations of places.

Call guest speaker to confirm time and date of presentation.Remind John to bring the maps

This first grade social studies lesson will teach students about the areas of the Earth called land and water using a picture of Earth, and identifying the difference between the two. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook “Our Earth” (p. 74-77).

G5.1.1 Differentiate between and identify water and land on a map and globe and use the terms ocean and continent.

Make 23 copies of the World-Continent Map templateHave the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies text book marked for pages 74-77

DAY During this lesson students will

learn about different land and water features which make up Earth’s geography and sort pictures into categories. This lesson uses the textbook, Geography from A to Z a Picture Glossary

G6.1.1- Sort and group pictures displaying geographic features, e.g. forests, deserts, lake regions.

Make a set of pictures for each student to use during the sorting activity.Don’t forget to hang up posters from Monday’s guest speaker.Make a copy of 3 bubble maps for each student and one for myself.

During this lesson, students will learn about the different reasons why people migrate to different locations and describe the geography of their new home as a young pioneer. This lesson will use the book; Papa and The Pioneer Quilt.

G7.1.2 Explain that some people live in locations other than where they were born.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Have video clip ready to play before the lesson begins.Have the book; Papa and The Pioneer Quilt ready to read.

During this lesson plan, students will learn where natural resources are found and how humans change the geography with overuse. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook “Natural Resources” (p.88-91) and Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies (p. 80-81).

G8.1.2 Identify locations for accessing basic resources available to the student, i.e., food, water.

Have the book Houghton Mifflin Social Studies “Natural Resources” (p. 88-91) ready to read from.Have pictures ready to show and pass around to students.Make the compare and contrast graphic organizer on butcher paper before the lesson begins.
