Genre The song itself is about a women suffering a miscarriage 4 months into her pregnancy. To match this the music video is a narrative video. This genre works well as adds an emotional side to the video because it enables the audience to see a person and link the song to that person. This works better than another genre may because the audience will feel connected to this person. The video is kept simple and the location of a hospital plays a key role as it shows a man, Ed Sheeran, waiting in a hospital waiting room. This includes showing the people who come in during his long wait which adds to the narrative.

Music and VisualsThis song is very slow with around 34 beats per minute and the music video matchesthis with only 5 shots throughout the whole 4:08 minute music video. 4 of these arewithin the first 10 seconds and then the rest of the music video is shot in onecontinuous take. This is done by the camera constantly moving, starting in a longshot away from the artist and moving in to a close up, before moving out to theother side and back in again. This is done smoothly which links in with the music asit allows the audience time to think about it and reflect.

Lyrics and VisualsEd, the artist, is shown lip syncingevery line of the song to himself ashe waits in the hospital. Althoughnone of the visuals link directly tosingle lines within the song, thepeople coming in and out of thehospital and the way that thesepeople fade away leaves theaudience wondering if theyrecovered from the hospital or ifthey passed away. Over all the lyricsdo support the visuals as it appearsthat Ed is waiting for the women inthe song at the hospital afterlearning that she has just had amiscarriage.

Star IconographyThe main focus throughout the video is on the artist as well as what’s going on around him at certain points in the music video. Ed Sheeran is shown wearing trainers, jeans and a hoodie which his fans will recognise and associate with him as this is what he typically wears, as well as it fitting in with the hospital location. A lot of his music is quite simple, with acoustic music telling a story and a simple music video to go with it and so this matches his typical style of music video.

VoyeurismBy Ed appearing to sing to himself, rather than to the camera, this implies that he is reflecting and doesn’t realising that the audience is watching. This is part of voyeurism as typically in music videos the artist is seen making eye contact with the camera or dancing where as in this music video it is as if the audience is simply watching the artist secretly.

Goodwin’s theory suggests that music videos usually also contain intertextuality, however I can’t find any within this music video.
