LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! The children of Edgbaston had better get set for a life in front of or behind the cameras.

Young Film Makers is bringing to South Birmingham the chance for children aged 8 to 16 to star in and make movies.

They can get their hands on professional cameras and with guidance from experienced filmmakers create, act in, direct and write their own films.

Young Film Makers have been running film schools for over 5 years and believe that children should be given the chance to learn and enjoy one of the most exciting and rewarding careers in the world.

They even allow you to try it first to see if you like it. It sounds like an opportunity not to be missed.

Children Speak Passionately About A Better WorldChildren at an Edgbaston school have voiced opinions and concerns about society and the environment around them, discussing subjects normally confined to adult conversation.

The students were taking part in the Lines Aloud annual public speaking competition, supported by the Rt Hon Clare Short MP, at St George’s School recently.

The topics included ‘Footballers and their earnings’, ‘Does prison work?’ and ‘Are the Royal Family bad for Britain?’ There were also presentations based on race issues, whether to ban smoking completely, the ethics of animal testing, and several views concerning the summer riots in Birmingham.

The students at St George’s School, ranging from age eight to fifteen years, had been working on their speeches since the start of term. Each child had been allowed to choose the subject matter and was encouraged to conduct

meaningful research, giving consideration to both sides of the argument before reaching their own personal conclusion.

The external judging panel - DJ and radio presenter Elliott Webb, actor Colin Buchanan and the Head of English at Queenswood Girl’s School in Hatfield, Paul-James Merrell - were all astounded by the arguments put forward and the passion with which the students delivered their speeches.

Each presentation was judged on the choice of topic, the content of the speech, the use of language and the expression and overall delivery. Winners in each year group were awarded prizes but all of those who took part were given due recognition for their hard work.

Max Griesbach, Year 10 winner, who spoke passionately against animal testing

Love is in the air at Winterbourne House and GardensIt’s not too early to start planning for Valentine’s Day, especially if you want to go treat your loved one to a romantic meal at the stunning Winterbourne House in Edgbaston.

Celebrate the perfect Valentine in the beautiful surroundings of the tearoom terrace. Enjoy a romantic evening with a tasty candlelit meal for two. Booking is essential as this is bound to sell out before the day.

But you don’t need to wait for Valentine’s Day to enjoy what Winterbourne has to offer. The house and gardens are open seven days a week for you to enjoy.

So if you are at a loss for something to do then why not take a step back

in time to discover what life was like during Edwardian days.

The House

On the ground floor you can see how the decor would have appeared when the Nettlefolds occupied the house over 100 years ago, with the study and drawing room boasting beautiful Arts & Crafts furniture and antiques.

An exhibition room highlights the importance of Winterbourne in the

Page 17: ED Jan 2012

17

community with interactive exhibits which tell the stories of the house and its occupants through the people who lived and worked there over the years.

In the study, learn more about John Nettlefold’s work in the family firm GKN - the largest screw, nut and bolt manufacturer in the world – together with his pioneering work as the chair of the first housing committee in Birmingham.

Hands-on exhibits in the drawing room reveal who influenced Margaret Nettlefold to design Winterbourne’s Grade II listed garden, with its sandstone rock garden, unusual nut walk and beautiful colour-themed borders.

The Gardens

Winterbourne is one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa garden.

Offering colour and interest throughout the year, the seven acre Grade II listed garden is home to a beautiful walled garden, striking colour themed borders, original sandstone rock garden and stream side planting.

The garden also displays plants from around the globe with collections of plants from China, North and South America and the alpine areas of the world.

There is also a programme of public garden events running throughout the year including open days, special interest tours, local heritage days, music concerts and an Edwardian fete.

Exhibitions

Brenda Boardman - Textile Light boxes opens on Monday 6 February and runs until Friday 16 March.

Brenda explores processes such as dyeing, painting, printing, stitching and the use of light in her colourful and creative exhibitions.

Art in the Gardens

An open-air exhibition of six carved and lettered works in slate and oak by six of the UK’s foremost lettering and memorial artists is on show in the gardens. From a beautiful Solar Seat to a Haiku Triptych, these fine exhibits are part of The Memorial Arts Charity’s evolving collection of works on memorial themes to be permanently on display at Winterbourne and five other major sites.

Winter Wonderland at Martineau GardensWrap up warm, pull on your outdoor boots and enjoy a walk around a winter wonderland at Martineau Gardens this month.

Lots of animals will be coming into the Gardens, as they look for shelter and forage for food to sustain them through the winter months. Food is provided for birds and there are several bird feeding areas. Take your binoculars (or borrow a pair) and enjoy a session in the bird hide. You can also borrow a guide to help identify different species who visit.

You can look out for tracks of nocturnal and shy animals in the mud or snow. Birds, foxes, badgers and other small mammals are always about looking for food. Younger visitors can follow the Explorers’ Trail – a new quiz which encourages every budding nature detective to look out for wildlife clues.

How to Get There:Address:27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, B5 7UG

Edgbaston Reservoir Open DayJoin the rangers in celebrating Local Nature Reserve status for the reservoir. Find out more about this fantastic site for wildlife and join in with a range of activities suitable for all the family. The open day is on 18th Feb from 11am to 3pm.

Situated close to the city centre, the stunning Edgbaston Reservoir is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. It was built in 1827 by Thomas Telford as a top-up for Birmingham canal system and is still used for that purpose today. The 70 acres site is mainly open water and supports a variety of birdlife; it is also a valuable city site for animals such as newts and bats. A belt of woodland and grassland encircles the reservoir providing an oasis of natural beauty in an urban setting. There are currently no public toilets on site.

The Ranger Service for Perry Barr and Ladywood is based at Edgbaston

Reservoir. It provides a public information service, an annual programme of events and educational sessions which include school visits, Forest School and work experience placements. Working in partnership with the police, environmental services, wildlife trust and other agencies the aim is to protect, promote and enhance the natural environment of the Reservoir for the benefit of its wildlife, heritage, the local community and visitors.

Walkers and joggers can enjoy the approximately 2.8 km (1.75 miles) path around the reservoir. The Birmingham Rowing Club and the

Page 21: ED Jan 2012

21

Midland Sailing Club are based here, and there is a Sea Cadet Centre. Fishing is also very popular at the site.

The main entrance and car park is at the end of Reservoir Road. The car park opens at 8am and is locked at dusk. There are three other pedestrian entrances, Rotton Park Road, Ickneild Port Road and Gillott Road. It should be noted that the Gillott road entrance is a flight of steps.

Address: The Ranger’s Lodge,115 Reservoir Road, Ladywood, Birmingham, B16 9EE.

Edgbaston Reservoir has an active friends group. ‘Friends of Edgbaston Reservoir’ was formed more than 10 years ago. The group monitors and promotes the area as a designated Site for Nature Conservation (SINC). Since formation the FER have maintained a constituted

presence in the area to represent the views of local people and other organised users (wildlife and bird watchers, Midland Sailing Club, Birmingham Rowing Club, the anglers and the walkers, cyclists and joggers) to both fight unwanted development and to promote sensitive improvements for the benefit of both the general public and wildlife.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the reservoir and its surroundings. FER organises various events each year in an attempt to encourage a wider appreciation of the interesting features around and on the water.

about the work of Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice please visit the website at www.bsmh.org.uk

St Mary's Hospice Accumulator ChallengeBirmingham St Mary’s Hospice, officially opened in July 1979. It is the oldest independent hospice in the West Midlands.

It was a pioneer in the hospice movement, only the seventh in the entire country, subscribing to the then trail-blazing philosophy that although not every patient can be cured, every patient can be helped.

Moreover, it was intended that the Hospice be non fee-paying, that patients be admitted according to need, from all walks of life, all faiths and none. Its opening was made possible only through the fundraising efforts of the general public.

Since then the Hospice has helped over 30,000 patients, their families and carers, through what can be very difficult times. It is open all day, every day of the year and covers the whole of the city as well as the borough of

Sandwell, which includes some of the most deprived areas in the country.

The Hospice comprises of a twenty-five bed In-Patient Unit, a family flat, the newly refurbished Day Hospice and a Community Palliative Care Team, visiting patients in their own homes.

Tyndallwoods solicitors in Harborne has been pleased to support the Hospice during the last 30 years, and has most recently signed up to their 2012 Accumulator Challenge.

Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods is shown receiving a £50 note from Theresa Meek from the Hospice and the challenge is to invest

this money to raise additional funds for the Hospice.
