each category of the reflection:• Clarified Format:

1. An introduction to the artifact.

2. What did you learn from developing this artifact, and how could creating the artifact lead to improvements in your teaching or your teaching preparation?

3. What Kaplan competencies did you achieve with this artifact? Identify the competencies, and explain how creating the artifact led to your meeting these selected competencies.

4. If you were to implement instruction using this artifact, what would the students gain?

• No required length; recommend 3-5 pages

Final Major Assignment• IV. Instructional Unit, due Unit 9,

300 Points• Three week unit, following template

provided, with at least five different lesson plans (lesson plans can last more than one day!)

• Daily Lesson Format:Lesson Topic:

Student Guiding Question:

Materials/Resources:

Opening Activity:

Instructional Activity:

Practice Activity:

Assessment Activity:

Suggestion for Getting Started: Plan a final unit-assessment activity and work backwards from it to design lessons. This final assessment activity should evaluate whether students… [meet the unit’s instructional goals]. Planning the assessment first will ensure that your lesson plans provide opportunities for students to gain understanding of concepts and proficiency with skills that you have targeted.

Unit Plan TemplateCriteria To earn the highest level of credit…

Analyze and reflect on best teaching practices

Evaluate resources for teaching. Evaluate methods of assessment. Evaluate methods for establishing a well-managed classroom learning environment. Design instructional activities that promote critical thinking. Design instructional activities for diverse learners.

Significant, Challenging, Varied, Appropriate Learning Goals

More than three learning goals meeting these criteria

Designs instruction for specific learning goals, student characteristics and needs, and learning contexts

Strong evidence of: these characteristics in the unit

Incorporate 3+ instructional methods; tech incorporated into 2+ lessons (see table, page 135)

Relevant incorporation of at least 3 instructional methods, & tech applications into 2+ lessons.

Uses multiple assessment modes and approaches aligned with learning goals to assess student learning before, during, and after instruction

Three strong assessment approaches related to assessing student learning before/during/after instruction

Uses assessment data to modify and adapt instruction and to communicate information about student progress and achievement

Written summary of how instruction should be adapted based on assessment information and includes thorough notes on student progress and achievement.

Ideas for the Instructional Unit, II: Benefits of Collaborative Learning

Gokhale, A. (1995). Collaborative learning enhances critical thinking. Journal of Technology Education, 7(1). Available: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/JTE/jte-v7n1/gokhale.jte-v7n1.html

•  Implications for Instruction

• “From this research study, it can be concluded that collaborative learning fosters the development of critical thinking through discussion, clarification of ideas, and evaluation of others' ideas.

• However, both [collaborative and traditional] methods of instruction were found to be equally effective in gaining factual knowledge.

• Therefore, if the purpose of instruction is to enhance critical- thinking and problem- solving skills, then collaborative learning is more beneficial.”

Page 13: ED 502: Transforming Teaching Practice, Tuesday, Feb 1, 2012 (7:00 p.m. ET) Final Seminar/ Methods for Teaching Concepts.

• Ideas for the Instructional Unit, III: Tech Applications• **** Instructional Survey- POLL QUESTION***• Which tech tools or applications have you used as a teacher or as a

student?• Created a website or published information in a public blog or wiki, or social

media site for a class

Created video and shared it with the class

Communicated with students, experts, or teachers from outside of your school using email, cellphone tools, or other electronic devices, as part of a class assignment.

Major Assignments- Keys to Earning Full Credit

• Follow the rubrics!• Start early, ask questions early• Feel free to run ideas by me, ahead of time• Meet the deadlines, but be sure what you turn in is your

best work.

Reviewing Unit 7’s DB• Question: Explain what teaching strategy you think would work best for the following

students in your classroom:

• I put the students into two groups. I placed Carla, Charles, Joelle, and Brian in the first group.    I think this group would work well with think, pair, and share. If they have prior knowledge on the subject at hand, then would then be able to share with the group or their shoulder partner. They will be able to help each other and most likely get good ideas to share.   This group was placed together because of their behaviors in addition to academics.

• The second group of students struggle with attention and staying on task. This group would work well by doing a project-based, problem-based learning. This learning would allow for differentiation in content, process and product. (Borich, 2011. p.43)  The students struggle with staying on task but do well academically.  I would stay on top of them throughout the process, so that they stay organized.  I would also give them a graphic organizer so stay focused. Make the situation comfortable and the students will be successful. –Suzanne Pleskin

Unit 8 Discussion Board- Instructional Resources/ Using Interactive presentations in your unit

• Unit 8: Review each of the following Web sites that discuss instructional methods and strategies. Imagine that your principal has asked you for recommendations for valuable Web sites that all teachers in the district should be using. After reviewing the sites, choose one and explain why it is more valuable than the others.

• Instructional Strategies Web site of the Saskatoon, Canada, public schools: http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/PD/instr/index.html

• Instructional Strategies Web site of the Sabine Parish Schools, Louisiana: http://www.sabine.k12.la.us/vrschool/instructstrat.htm

Unit 8 Seminar: Using inductive, deductive, and interactive presentation techniques

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQra4baNwP8

Teachers can successfully incorporate deductive [provide examples to illustrate a rule] teaching, inductive [form a principle that encompasses examples] teaching, and interactive presentations** into their lessons. Watch this video in which an instructor, Chandralekha [Singh, uses these methods. While you watch this video, look for examples of each. Be prepared to discuss your observations in seminar. This week, we will also discuss questions regarding the final project.
