Carry Important Papers withYou

Sometimes when you and your familytravel, you may need help. You might need to:

get emergency help with food, housing,medical assistance or transportation

find a day or child care serviceenroll your children in schoolget legal helpget help filling out important papers such as

income tax forms or birth certificaterequests

Most agencies that provide socialservices need to see certain papers in order totell if you are eligible. Having the right paperscan make approval happen much faster.

Keep your pay stubs or envelopes thatyour crew leader or employer gives you. Ifyou don't get a record of your pay, make a listfor your own use. Write down the dates andamounts you get paid. Always get theemployer's and crew leader's name, addressand phone number.

Farmworker service agencies, healthclinics, schools and churches offer what youmay need. Some services are:

Encourage Your Children in Math and Science

Do you know that you need math skillsfor some of the best paying jobs? Yourchildren, both girls and boys, should take atleast three years of math in high school. Thisgives them a strong background to help themget good jobs. It will also help them get intocollege. Some of the jobs requiring good mathskills are:

accountantcomputer programmerdoctormedical technicianengineercarpenter

Many girls say they don't like math andscience. They might not think that they will begood in those classes. Encourage them totake math and science and give it a try! Manygirls stop taking math after 10th grade. Tellyour daughters to keep taking math. They willbe able to get better jobs because of it.

There are many things you can do athome to help your children in math. We usemath every day. For example, if you work intomatoes you might think about these:

Encourage your children to work withcomputers, do a science fair project and takemore math and science classes in school. In

Family Traditions

Be proud of who you are. Shareyour pride in your family's culture andtraditions with your children. Somethings you can share with your family:

Make a specialfood. Ask yourchildren to help you.

Share some of your favorite mem-ories from your childhood with yourchildren.

Tell your children some stories thatyour parents or grandparents sharedwith you as a child.

Read a favoritestory out loud toyour children.Look at picturebooks togetherand make up stories.

Look at old family photos together .

If you speak Spanish or anotherlanguage, teach it to your children.Speaking more than one language is agood skill to have.

Helping Your Child in a New School

It is important to know how to help yourchild in a new school. Each state and each

i school is different. You need to know whatschools expect. This will help your child learn

I better and graduate.

Here we some things to do:

Enroll your children in the new school assoon as you get to your new town.Take your children with you.

Carry important papers with you. Thesepapers will help the school enroll yourchildren faster:

Take as many of these papers with youas you can. Ask your school how to get anyothers that you need.

Ask the school what shots your childrenneed in that state.

Ask if the school has any special rules youneed to know.

After your child is enrolled:

Make sure your children go to school everyday. If they miss school, they will fallbehind in their work. If they are out toomuch, they will not pass the grade.

Meet your children's teachers. If you donot speak English, bring a friend orsomeone in the family who does.(Many schools have teachers whospeak both English and Spanish.)

Go to parent-teacher conferences. Ask theteacher any questions you have aboutyour children's learning.

Feel free to talk to the teacher even whenthere is no conference.

Ask about the school'sfree breakfast andlunch program. Youmay qualify if you donot earn much money.

Talk to your high school children'sguidance counselor. Ask what yourchildren will need to graduate. Makesure they get these courses and thecredits they need.

When you and your school worktogether, your children can graduate!

Helping With Homework

Homework is an important part ofschool. You may want to make sure that yourchild keeps up with it every night. This willhelp him/her to do well in school. Childrenoften start getting homework around the thirdgrade, but the timing may change from schoolto school.

How do I know what my child has forhomework?

Your child will probably have homeworkevery night. Make a calendar or chart so bothof you can keep track of tests, papers, andprojects.

When and where should my child dohis/her homework?

Your child should have a quiet place towork. This means no radios or television.Find a place for your child to work. Make sureyour child has enough pens and paper andother materials. You may want to set up acouple hours before or after dinner for yourchild to do his/her homework. If your childfinishes early, have him/her write a letter to arelative or watch an educational show on TV.

How can I help my child with his/herhomework?

Be there during homework time so yourchild feels at ease asking you questions. Youcan also listen to oral reports and quiz him/herbefore a test. Always remember to let your

children do their own work and correct theirown mistakes. This is the only way they willlearn.

You may have heard a teachersay that the children's school recordsare on MSRTS.

What is MSRTS?

MSRTS (people say "MERTZ', isthe Migrant Student Record TransferSystem. It is a computer system foreducational and health records for allmigrant students. Migrant studentsmust move so often that the U.S.government has set up this system fortheir records. The main computercenter for MSRTS is in Little Rock,Arkansas. But all states that haveMigrant Education programs useMSRTS.

MSRTS records can show:

the last school your childrenattended

what grades they are enrolled inwhat courses they have takenhow many credits they havewhat courses they will need to

graduate

any health problems that may affecttheir learning

which shots they have hadas well as other information about

their health and schooling

When your children move to anew school district, MSRTS sendscopies of their records to their newschool. When you know that you aremoving, you can also ask yourchildren's teachers for copies oftheir MSRTS records to take withyou. With this help your children canget the classes and health services thatthey need.

What do you do at a parent-teacherconference?

You will meet your child's teacherand talk about your child's education. Ifyour child is having problems in schoe, youcan ask the teacher about them. Theteacher can tell you what your child islearning and how well he/she is doing inclass.

It scares many parents to go to aschool and meet a new teacher. Remem-ber, teachers are people, too. They don'tknow everything. As a parent, you are yourchild's first teacher. Both you and theteacher can learn from each other abouthow to help your child learn better.

Questions?

Do you have some questions youwould like to ask about your child's school-ing? Write them down as you think of them.Bring your list of questions to the confer-ence with you.

The teacher can tell you how yourchild is learning, how he/she feels aboutschool, how your child acts with others.The teacher can show you a sample of yourchild's work. You have a right to see yourchild's test scores, including 10 test andachievement tests. Ask what the testmeasures and what the score tells you.

You can share how your child actsat home, what his/her favorite things to doare, special talents, health problems, andany concerns you have. You may want toask the teacher:

Programs for Out-of-School Youth

Keep your children in school until theygraduate. A high school diploma will helpthem get a better job. They will earn moremoney over their lifetime if they get moreeducation.

If your children (top out of school,encourage them to go back to school, get aG.E.D. diploma, or get vocational training.Remember that getting skills for a career takestime. Any one program may not mean a jobit may mean a step towards a job. Here aresome programs that could be the first step:

High school Equivalency Program (HEP)helps migrant youth get their G.E.D. diploma.HEP is free to those who qualify. There are23 HEPs across the county. Most of themare on college campuses. At some of theprograms, students live on campus. At others,students travel from home each day. Classesare usually 10 to 12 weeks. Some programsteach the G.E.D. in Spanish.HEP also has:

counselingtutoringcareer informationjob placementtransportaton to and

from the programfree room and meals for cs7 of

those who live on campusa small amount of money to live on for each week of

the program

HG' students must:

be at least 17 years oldbe serious about working on the G.E.D.be agricultural workers or dependents of one with at

Reading at Home

Reading at home is important. Readingteaches children about things they are curiousabout and makes them want to learn more.Good readers do better in school. Evenbefore your children are in school, they shouldbe around things to read. There are manythings you can do at home to help yourchildren become good readers.

Read out loud to yourchildren. Pick a timeand place where youcan read each day.Turn off the TV!Reading is a good way to bring the familytogether. Many parents read to their childrenat bedtime.

Read in whatever language you use athome.

Hold what you read so that your child cansee it.

Cut back on how much television yourchild-en watch. Have them spend more timereading. Let them see you reading. Thisshows that you value reading and enjoy it.

Your Baby's Growth

Your baby will grow a lot in his/her first year of life. This Towth will happen very quickly.1Here are some things to make you aware of the different stages your baby will go through.

Birth to four weeks: should suck and swallow wellgrabs finger if you touch palmturns head if you touch cheek

1 month to 3 months: holds small object if placed in handsmakes "cooing" soundslifts head up for short time when on stomachfollows moving objects with eyes

Your Children Can Go To College

You want the best for your child-en.Help them plan for their future. They havemany choices to make. Some may want toget a job right away. Others may want to go tocollege first.

When college is their choice, you willneed to plan early. Here are some things youcan do to make college possible for yourchildren:

Make sure your child-en attend school everyday.

Get to know school counselors, teachers oradvocates who are willing to help. Theycan give you information about collegeand career choices.

Make sure your children take the classesthe!' will need to get into college.

Be aware of what colleges require. Somecolleges require a certain number ofyears of some high school subjects.Some may want four years of Englishor math.

Your Children's Dental Care

Teach yourchildren when theyare young to takecare of their teeth.Be a good exampleby taking good careof your teeth. Here are some thingsyou can do:

Clean your baby's gums and teethafter each feeding. Use a smallwashcloth to wipe away bits of foodinside the mouth.

Don't give your childa bottle filled with milk,formula, juice or a sweetdrink at bedtime or for along time during the day.The sugar will maketeeth rot and discolor. Fill the bottlewith water at bedtime.

Take your children to the dentistearly. They should have a check-up byage 3.

Teach your children to eat a varietyof foods. Limit sweet snacks. Havethem drink lots of milk.
