From the Editor-in-Chief

Joëlle Tabak - I have never been good at watching fromthe sideline. Probably never will be either. But still,that is what I have been doing for a year now, as for-mer coordinator of the Editors Committee.A stress-ful job I must say. Not that stress was necessary,since Silvester showed himself a very capable editor-in-chief, but I would not be me anymore if that didnot cause me headaches all the same. Switching jobschanged it all and I have to say it feels great!

Only now do I realise why. Now I have at leastthe illusion to be in some sort control. I do notneed to consult anyone, I can harass Silvesterwhenever he dares to appear on MSN andwhine about everything that I do not want tobe my responsibility. But most importantly, Ifind myself in the heart of action. Certainly, it isnice to shout from the sideline that a playercommitted a serious fault, but I would rather bethe person that gets to decide on a penalty. Ofcourse what I was not aware of at that time, isthat being a referee implies a lot of running toboth sides - with this I mean the Board and theeditors themselves - to get things done, but Ipromise you I will keep on running.

How will my decisions affect the match's out-come? Well, I would like to start with the com-forting thought that I am no great fan of soccer- there go 60 percent of our readers. Therefore,this year I would like to bring a playful elementinto the game, which I hope does not onlyreflect my female touch but also my creativestreak. In the past my fear of failure may haveheld me back. But my year as a board's treasurerhas taught me the difference between successand failure: many roads lead to failure, but onlyone to success, according to the famous Greekphilosopher Aristotle.

So, this coming year, I will try to combine crea-tivity with this new insight, following the wisewords written below:

I am sure my committee members will challen-ge me to come up with new, creative ideas, andvice versa. I am equally sure that I am not theonly one who has decided to run the risk ofbeing wrong. You only have to look at the manynew names among the contributors to this edi-tion, to find confirmation for that claim. If onlyfor that reason this issue should prove itselfworthy to be read thoroughly. Beside that thisis also a special edition because of its two faces,which are due to the fact that it contains theCompany Day special as well.

I end this first contribution as editor-in-chiefby stopping to write - one of my many creativeinsights. Just read and let the words speak forthemselves!

because we regularly have drinks at The Steegevery first Monday of the month. Because of the3rd ECU'92 lustrum, every BOMB will have itsown and (sometimes) surprising activity. Don'tmiss out on these events!

The 3rd ECU'92 lustrum! On March 24,ECU'92 celebrates her 15th birthday. Since werefuse to let this special event pass unnoticed,we will organize a spectacular lustrum celebra-tion, which will start on Wednesday, March14th and end on Tuesday, March 27th. Pleasemake a note on our lustrum week in your agen-da because you can expect a selection of greatevents such as a prom, a spectacular party, aforeign excursion weekend and more… So, keepan eye on our website and have a look at thepromotional material.

Before our lustrum, however, the company daywill take place. Elsewhere in this edition of theEcunomist you can read more about this impor-tant career event! I hope to see you there!

At the moment (of writing), we have beenmaking ECU'92 policy for about a month. Atthe General Meeting on September 13, we recei-ved the green light to officially start our boardyear. Actually, we already started some timeearlier. From the moment we returned from ourwell-deserved holidays, ECU'92 started domi-nating our lives. In a small rented cottage -infact, a former chicken-shed in the countrysideof Noord-Brabant - we worked on our policyplan. Before introduction week, our policy planwas complete and we were ready for take off.

In fact, introduction week was our 'official'start as the ECU'92 board. Experiencing anintroduction as a board member is totally diffe-rent from an intro as a coach or, as everybodyhas experienced, as a freshman. But in fact, itwas a great start of our board year, with fewhours of sleep and lots of beer. Hopefully, allfreshman had a great start of their time at theUtrecht School of Economics and, of course, atECU'92. Therefore, I would like to thank theintroduction committee again for their greatperformance in organizing this week!

After the introduction week and the GeneralMeeting, 'normal' life as a board member hasbegun. In the first month, we had some niceactivities like the lecture by WillemMiddelkoop, the constitution reception and thefirst BOMB. The latter is a monthly activity,

afgestudeerden van ECU'92. Het is de bedoe-ling dat er op deze avond drie cabaretiers opzullen treden waarvan er twee aanstormendetalenten zijn en één een bekende naam. Wehopen jullie hier natuurlijk in grote getalen temogen ontvangen!Het oud-besturendiner is de tweede alumniac-tiviteit die plaats zal vinden tijdens de lustrum-viering. Het is onze doelstelling om alle oud-bestuurders over de afgelopen 15 jaar bij elkaarte krijgen. Waarschijnlijk zal dit niet helemaallukken, maar een aantal van 60 oud-bestuur-ders van ECU'92 zal hierbij zeker gehaald wor-den. Deze avond is de ultieme manier om jeoud-bestuursgenootjes en de andere besturenweer eens te zien en te spreken.

Hiernaast wil ik nog iets heel anders onder deaandacht brengen. Vorig jaar heeft de USE hetidee opgevat zelf een alumnivereniging op terichten voor alle afgestudeerde economie stu-denten. Dit heeft geresulteerd in de StichtingEconomics Netwerk Utrecht. Het is de bedoe-ling dat de SENU en Æcu samen gaan werkenvanaf dit jaar. Het is echter nog niet duidelijkhoe dit precies in zijn werk zal gaan en er wordtop dit moment gewerkt aan een invulling hier-van. Zodra er meer over bekend is laten we jedit natuurlijk weten.

In deze eerste Ecunomist van dit jaar zal ik eenvoorproefje geven van al het moois wat dit jaargaat brengen voor de oud-leden. Ten eerste wil ik hierbij de Æcu commissievoorstellen aan jullie. Dit jaar bestaat de com-missie uit vier leden. Dit zijn Yde Starreveld,Sjoera Groenveld, Jacqueline Verhaegen enJouke Donselaar. De commissie zal haar bestgaan doen dit jaar tot een onvergetelijk jaar temaken voor alle afgestudeerde ECU'92 leden.

Zoals gebruikelijk zullen jullie dit jaar de Æcunieuwsbrief gaan ontvangen. Hierin vindt jeweer nuttige informatie, interviews, columnsen veel meer. Houd de deurmat dus goed in degaten. Dit jaar vallen de Æcunomen daarnaast met hunneus in de boter. ECU'92 bestaat, zoals julliewellicht weten, vijftien jaar en dit wordtgevierd met het derde lustrum! Dit hele jaarstaat in het kader van ons derde lustrum enhierbij wordt speciaal aandacht besteed aan deoud-leden van ECU. Tijdens de lustrumweek, die in maart van 2007zal plaatsvinden, zullen er speciale activiteitenzijn voor ÆCUnomen en oud bestuursleden. Zo zal er vrijdag 16 maart een speciale alumni-avond worden georganiseerd.De jaarlijkse alumniavond is net als andere jareneen cabaretavond, maar omdat het lustrum is,zal deze avond extra feestelijk worden opgezet.Deze avond is voornamelijk bedoeld voor de

Malou van de Berg, Secretaris - Een nieuw collegejaar is aangebroken.Voor jullieligt hiermee de tijd dat je nog studeerde weer een jaar verder.We zijn nogsteeds heel blij met jullie betrokkenheid bij ECU en ook dit jaar brengt weerspeciale activiteiten om jullie zo betrokken te kunnen houden. Dit nieuwecollegejaar brengt ook een nieuwe samenstelling van het ECU'92 bestuurmet zich mee. Ook dit jaar zal de secretaris de Æcu commmissie onder, indit geval, haar hoede hebben. Dit betekent natuurlijk ook dat ik me als nieu-we secretaris en coördinator van de Æcu commissie zal gaan inzetten voorjullie.

Let me introduce to you in random order: Antoine.Antoine is the chairman of the board of ECU'92 2006-2007. On a normalday he has a meeting with a firm or association, tries to keep an eye on theother board members, calls with all kinds of people and gives long spee-ches at receptions of other associations. Antoine is a great fan of soccer,he practices goalkeeping since he was 6. Antoine is a person who alwaysstays for one last beer…….

Speaking of beer we automatically introduce: Luuk.Luuk is coordinator internal affairs of the board of ECU'92 2006-2007.As any good coordinator internal affairs should do, Luuk lives at night.His day starts with waking up after a party and few hours of sleep.During the week Luuk has meetings with all of his 7 committees,thinks of new activities and promotion and keeps the website up todate. Luuk was a very talented soccer player until an ankle injury cameinto play. Now he still plays soccer and is one of the key players in thefamous indoor-soccer team B.I.E.R.'05.

Another key player of B.I.E.R.'05 is: Coos.Coos is coordinator educational affairs of the board of ECU'92 2006-2007. One of the goals of ECU'92 is to improve education at the UtrechtSchool of Economics, and therefore the voice of the economics-studentmust be heard. Coos is member of several groups who talk about educa-tional affairs. So if you have any complaints or remarks about educatio-nal affairs: contact Coos. As coordinator educational affairs Coos is res-ponsible for the booksales, the freshman committee and the Discussionand Lecture Committee. Coos is known as the gossip-guru of ECU'92:if Coos is in the ECU'92 room, you might as well be in the middle of RTLBoulevard. Coos is still single and mostly enjoys attention of females.

De redactie - A new academic year brings new courses, new teachers, new students, new inspiration and a new board of Student Association ECU'92.For years ECU'92 has organised all kinds of activities and provides econom-ics-students in Utrecht with study books.This year is a special year forECU'92 because we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the association.Thisso-called 3rd Lustrum will be celebrated during the year with all kinds ofactivities in March 2007.The board of ECU'92 together with her committeeswill organize this week. But the board of ECU'92 does more.This article is tofind out who these persons are and what they do all day long, and to find outwhat they can do for you.

One of those females is also a member of the board of ECU'92: Selma.Selma is coordinator external affairs of the board of ECU'92 2006-2007. As coordinator external affairs Selma visits lots of firms andtries to convince them to sponsor activities of ECU'92. Makingcontracts, lots of phone calls and meetings are half of her tasks duringthe day. The other half is about organizing the conference day and thecompany day committees. The conference and the company day com-mittee are two of the biggest events of ECU'92 during the year, nextto the lustrum. As the Benjamin of the board Selma is victim to allkinds of teasing. During her free time Selma plays clarinet in someorchestras. Like any real woman of her age she likes to shop throug-hout the weekend.

Shopping brings us to the other female touch in the board: Malou.Malou is the secretary of the board of ECU'92 2006-2007. Malou is incharge of the membership affairs and keeps contact with all other asso-ciations. All letters, postcards and packages are sent by Malou. AlsoMalou is Queen of the Minutes, coordinator of the Almanak and thestudy-trip committee. Finally as secretary Malou keeps in touch withthe alumni of ECU'92.Malou likes shopping and spending time with her friends at Veritas andoff course her boyfriend. In ECU'92 Malou is a relative newcomer.However during the first weeks of the new board it was Malou who waspresent at all receptions, parties, lectures and other activities. Malou is

known and famous for her smile and curls.

Curls also characterizes the final board member: Silvester.Silvester is the treasurer of the board of ECU'92 2006-2007. The treasureris responsible for the financial matters of the association. This means thatSilvester is busy with bills, declarations, sponsoring and collectingmoney. As coordinator of the Ecunomist and the Almanak, Silvester is alsocreative with letters.In the weekends Silvester plays soccer in the lowest regions of amateur-soccer and tries to improve his Judo skills. Because of his non-drinkingregime he is the ideal no-drink-driver of the board.

Forty complaints have been registered by theComplaints Coördinator of USE about the factthat repeaters do not have the right to retakeexams, in this case for Macro. I heartily applaudthis initiative. If we want to do somethingagainst such measures, students must makethemselves be heard more. This year, like any,there will be representatives who look after theinterests of the students, but the simple fact isthat they cannot do this alone. It would be bet-ter not only to hear complaints in the halls ofUniversity College, so I gladly invite people toregister their complaints with me, the educa-tion committees, the sub-faculty council or theComplaints Coordinator. Moreover, I hope tosee you all at the education discussions we willbe organizing.

We've found various students who were wil-ling to take some of this task upon them thisyear. For the bachelor they are listed in theoverview below:

From the 10th till the 12th of October, ourschool was visited by the accreditation com-mittee. This committee came to review the qua-lity of the education and its facilities. After spe-aking to students, teachers, supporting staff,various boards and education committees, thencommittee ruled in favour of us. This approvalmeans that USE can apply for accreditation andstudents will keep receiving study-grants - theeducation will remain subsidized and USE canhand out officially recognized diplomas.

The second major development this year knowsits roots in a long discussion which took placelast year. Back then, the board decided not tooffer working groups or the right to retakeexams for all compulsory courses which stu-dents took for the second time (or more). Duein part to the efforts of the students representa-tion of last year, an exception has been made fortwo courses: Math & Statistiscs andIntroduction To Economics. Sadly, this meansthat we haven't seen any working groups orretake exams for Macro this period.

It's clear that this measure is part of a trendwhich is developing right now in 'university-land'. This trend principally assumes that stu-dents can be motivated by sanctions, in thiscase in the form of exclusion from education.The latest example of this is the decision by theGoverning Board only to allow a replacementexam with a final grade of at least a 4. Anotherexample is the Binding Study Advice, imple-mented at USE for the first time last year.

Coos Santing, Coordinator Educationel Affairs - The academic year has hardly star-ted and already there are plenty of notable developments in the field op edu-cation. Our faculty was visited for the first time by an accreditation commit-tee, and students who took a course for the second time have been introdu-ced to the repeaters education.

Planbureau (RPB) heeft, overigens niet alsenige, weinig goede woorden over voor hetnationale innovatiebeleid in Nederland."Kennisregio's zoals succes-story Silicon Valleykan je niet scheppen", volgens RPB-directeurDerksen. Laten we eens teruggaan naar de basis dieSchumpeter en zijn opvolgers legden voor hetinnovatie-denken. Eenvoudig gezegd komtSchumpeters theorie erop neer dat economi-sche groei voortkomt uit een stijging van pro-ductiviteit, die op zijn beurt in gang wordtgezet door gebruik te gaan maken van nieuwe,efficiëntere combinaties van productiefactoren.Als beloning voor het geld en de moed die eenondernemer stopt in productinnovatie, krijgthij een (vaak tijdelijk) monopolie op de markt.Tegelijkertijd zullen andere producten uit demarkt verdwijnen, wegens een gebrek aan inte-resse na de introductie van het nieuwe of ver-nieuwde product.

Er ligt een duidelijke link tussen Schumpetersideeën en de 'Kondratievgolven', waaraan groteinnovaties ten grondslag liggen. Deze zoge-naamde neo-schumpeteriaanse benaderingwijst erop dat steeds weer innovaties de basisvormen van een golf van aanvankelijk toene-mende en daarna weer afnemende economischegroei. De innovaties hebben te maken met deopkomst van nieuwe inputs. Zo werd de econo-mische groei van begin 20e eeuw gedreven doorstaal en elektriciteit en de daarop volgende door


In het jaar 1883 overleed een van de beroemdstepersonen uit de geschiedenis van het econo-misch denken: Karl Marx. In hetzelfde jaar zagJoseph Alois Schumpeter het levenslicht. Veelovereenkomsten tussen de twee zijn er overi-gens niet. Een ding waarom beiden bekendstaan is een ontkennend antwoord op de vraag"kan kapitalisme overleven?". Schumpeter wasechter zeker geen marxist. Waar Marx eenrevolutie van onderaf zag als de basis voor deondergang van het kapitalisme, wees JosephSchumpeter op het belang van ondernemer-schap en innovatie. Schumpeter geloofde in hetsucces van kapitalisme, maar hij zag dat eenverandering plaatsvond die het kapitalismeschaadde. De ondernemer, die hij als drijvendekracht achter de economie zag, werd meer enmeer verdrongen, vooral door bureaucratie. Eenonderwerp dat nog altijd verbazingwekkendactueel is.

Nederlands innovatiebeleidOndernemerschap en innovatie: waar hebbenwe dat eerder gehoord? "Planbureau kraaktregionaal innovatiebeleid" stond deze zomer inde krant. Het kapitalisme is (nog) niet tenonder gegaan zoals Schumpeter voorspelde,maar innovatie is ook in 2006 een discussie-punt. Veel energie en vooral geld werd gestoken in deinmiddels even beruchte als beroemde strategie'Pieken in de Delta' van het ministerie vanEconomische Zaken. Het Ruimtelijk

Roderick Udo - Menig economiestudent stelt zich zuchtend vragen over hetnut van wiskunde voor een econoom. Joseph Schumpeter twijfelde er nietover. Zijn standpunt was dat men zo exact mogelijk met theorie bezig moetzijn. Echter, dit is niet het meest interessante standpunt van deze bijzonderewetenschapper. Met zijn ideeën over ondernemerschap en innovatie was deOostenrijker zijn tijd ver vooruit. Een nieuwe Nederlandse regering zouanno 2006 best nog iets van hem kunnen leren.

olie.Schumpeters theorieën over innovatie enondernemerschap leveren een goede basis in hetdenken over economische groei. Schumpeterstelde dat de ondernemer die innovatief durft tezijn en risico's durft te nemen centraal moetstaan. En wat doen beleidsmakers? Die willen innova-tie stimuleren door het aanwijzen van kernregi-o's (in Nederland de fameuze pieken in dedelta) en activiteiten die daar moeten wordengestimuleerd.

Wijze lessenDat men tachtig jaar geleden Schumpeter nietdirect volgde, is misschien niet zo wonderlijk.Schumpeter zelf had ook moeite om los tekomen van het evenwichtsdenken dat in zijntijd ieders blik bepaalde. Maar nu, anno 2006,hebben we zijn theorie en de uitbreiding vanzijn opvolgers kunnen toetsen aan de geschie-denis. Die leert ons dat de innovaties die vooreen nieuwe golf van economische groei zorgenniet geïnitieerd worden door zich op het stimu-leren van specifieke technologieën te richten.Ervaring zou ons moeten leren dat toeval eenbelangrijke rol speelt, wat inhoudt dat de enigemanier om economische groei te stimuleren hetstimuleren van innovatief ondernemerschap is.Dit vraagt voor open-mindedness en bereidheid

tot het erkennen van het belang van onderne-merschap van de overheid. NRC-next kopteonlangs op haar voorpagina "Te weinig lef en teweinig investeringen: Nederland raakt achter-op met innovatie". De krant wijst erop dat "deoverheid innovatieve ondernemers beter moetondersteunen" en dat Nederlanders risico's mij-den: "falen is taboe". Ondernemers hebben vrijheid nodig om hunactiviteiten te ontplooien, waarvoor weinigoverheidsgeld nodig is. Simpelweg het ver-schaffen van die vrijheid en het wegnemen vanbarrières is van belang.Laten we hopen dat het nieuwe kabinet tot hetheldere inzicht komt waar Joseph Schumpeterbijna een eeuw geleden de basis van legde. Hetbieden van vrijheden aan de innovatieve onder-nemer hoeft niet veel te kosten en lijkt dé routenaar economische groei; wat wil je nog meer alsje wilt bezuinigen? Baat het niet, dan schaadthet niet...

Speaking in economic terms, what seems to bethe problem here is a lack of investment, fromeither side. You say you mean to integrate, andthis surely is the case also with the Dutch stu-dents - the intentions are good. However, forintegration to work one party, and preferablyboth, need to reach out. There is openness fromeither, but only when approached. You'rewrong in accrediting this distance to the domi-nant-race-status of the Dutch students.Although I do not wish to presume or even hintat the possibility that Holland is like the US ofA (perish the thought), I know that over here,everybody has and gets a chance, regardless ofrace, colour or creed. Moreover, you underestimate the importance ofthese years - the connections you make in thesestudent years are some of the strongest andmost lasting in your life. Sometimes, we (foreigners) name as friends ourbrief acquaintances, classmates, neighbors andco-workers. They are Dutch, they like us wellenough, and they do talk to us. However, I donot see much common ground for deep conver-sation with a fellow Dutch person, as I am usu-ally in a hurry to go about my own business,and they are as well - leaving for their friends,family, ect. Local students have more responsi-bility for welcoming foreigners, making us feelsafe and wanted, since foreigners are vulnerableas we do not have a secure backbone inHolland. Dutch students seek contact, trying tomake friends with people who want to knowthem only skin-deep, because economically it isnot efficient to make good friends with peoplewho are going to leave in four years time. We domake long-term friends in university, but itseems we make them with those alike us -foreign. All you have is flash backs from BIGevents or WILD parties: where Dutch are withDutch and foreigners alone. I am not saying thatwe are keen on attaching to Dutch people; weknow there will be a time to leave and relationwill loosen. But we do mean to integrate andshare with Dutch students, remembering that ittakes two to tango.

Op de tweede dag van onze introductieweekwas een wiskundetest gepland, om onze basis-kennis te toetsen. Uit de resultaten bleek datmaar 20 procent van de eerstejaars studentenvoldoende wiskundevoorkennis hadden voorde opleiding economie. Ook de overgang naarhet Engels viel voor velen zwaar. HoewelEngels een verplicht vak op de middelbareschool is, beheersen wij het snel lezen van groteuniversitaire teksten niet. De lesstof is te ver-snipperd, waardoor leerlingen nergens echtgoed in zijn. Van ons werd verwacht dat wijzelfstandig kunnen werken, maar dit gebeurdewel onder begeleiding. Nu worden wij in hetdiepe gegooid en het is moeilijk om boven waterte blijven. Om die reden blijkt dat de TweedeFase toch zijn doel voorbij is geschoten.

Om deze stap te overbruggen is de Tweede Faseingevoerd. Is deze in zijn opzet geslaagd? Erwoeden steeds felle discussies over de overstapvan het VWO naar het WO. Boris Dittrich,fractievoorzitter van D66, zegt in deVolkskrant: "De Tweede Fase was een succesop de tekentafel, maar is mislukt in de praktijk."In hoeverre komt dit overeen met de eigenbevindingen?

De theorieDe Tweede Fase, ook wel het 'Studiehuis', werdingevoerd in 1998 en 1999 in de bovenbouw vanhet voortgezet onderwijs met de nadruk op hetaanleren van vaardigheden in plaats van op fei-tenkennis. 'Leren leren' werd de leus.Leerlingen moeten leren zelfstandig en ingroepjes te werken, grote hoeveelheden stof totzich te nemen en toe te passen en hun eigen stu-die te plannen. Zo zou de Tweede Fase de aan-sluiting op het hoger onderwijs moeten verbe-teren. Dit moet voorkomen dat leerlingen snelafhaken bij hun vervolgstudie.

In de praktijkDit klinkt allemaal erg mooi. Maar zijn we in depraktijk ook daadwerkelijk beter af? Zoweldocenten als studenten leverden veel kritiek opde Tweede Fase. De eerstejaars studenten heb-ben hun problemen met rekenen en het lezenvan ingewikkelde teksten te danken aan hetStudiehuis. Dit blijkt uit een verschenen rap-port van het Ministerie van Onderwijs. Ookschieten de analytische vaardigheden tekort.

Follow up from page 18:the volleyball court, the huge grass field and mainly the company of their fellow students, who werenow becoming friends. The disco at the terrain offered a place to chill during the night, so there wasnothing short. Although on Saturday there was no beer for a couple of hours, the organisation quickly analysed thiserror and made up for their mistake; some of them hopped in a car to get new beers. Transactioncosts, a high price at the 'open-24-hours-a-day!' shop and excess demand drove the price of a beerup to one-and-a-half click on your consumption cart, whereas one beer used to cost only one click(one click equals 50 cents, each cart has 10 clicks).

If this is the only complaint to be made, the weekend was - like the week - a blast.

our slogan for the introduction week for yearsto come: "Blood, sweat and economics"! When/if everyone survives this there follows abite to eat. After all, we don't want to be knownas an African economics-faculty. Although apart of the loathing during the week comes inthe form of hunger, meaning the torture of wai-ting two hours for your food in the hellish "IlPozzo"…which is good for your general develop-ment. In closing this long, long day, we cannot over-look the evening-schedule, which makes sureeverybody will go on till the deep hours of thenight and lack of sleep will be felt the followingmorning. A consequence of this is that all thefreshman will unquestionably suffer from thro-at-cancer after a day or two, especially when wecrank up the temperature in locations as DeSteeg to a comfortable 45 to 60 degrees.

Mental violenceOn day two we open with the ever-importantchoice between Macro2 or ITE, which forceshung-over freshies to make a choice betweentwo subjects without any knowledge on eitherone of them, which will decide the course oftheir time at USE. When they have done so,they stumble out of one hall into another one,totally disillusioned, to be sat down in front ofa three-hour math test. This serves to kill thelast little bit of self-confidence left in them,after which we are well underway in breakingdown the schoolboys and building proud stu-dents. After all this mental violence, the neces-sary physical extenuation can't be overlooked; athree-and-a-half-hour march through the city'smost deserted places should be the perfect

solution.When all the freshman have been broken, wehave one last surprise for them: during thismarch they must disgrace themselves as adults,by playing games like nail-shitting and bite-the-cake.

Of course, it's utterly unthinkable to includesuch items in the programme; the facultaryintroduction must bring out well-motivatedstarters for our economics education, not tur-ned-off, hung-over and ragged semi-students.Nonetheless my ideal introduction week wouldlook exactly like this. Which is why I think Ispeak for all the freshmen, coaches and everyo-ne involved when I say: thank you for a won-derful introduction!

Continuing the week at Heino The introduction ended with a fantastic week-end in Heino. Although we bought more beerthan the years before we apparently did not haveenough….so a couple of people from the intro-duction committee had to go to the all-nightstore and negotiate about the price of the beer. On Saturday there were water balloons all overthe place. A lot of unknowing freshmen were ter-ribly wet after the brilliant coordinated actionfrom the introduction committee. The most exci-ting part though was off course the belly-diving!Harry and Antoine, born for this, showed us howit's done, and even though the woman who triedcouldn't quite catch up, they still deserve ourutmost respect for trying. Naturally we endedevery night in Heino with a great party at thelocal disco!

This may make you wonder if we enjoyed theweek as much as you did. The answer is a defini-tive 'YES'! We had a great time and participatedas much as you did in all the parties! In the follo-wing part we will tell something about the mostbrilliant things that happened during the week.

An exhausting but satisfying weekAfter the exciting sports afternoon and the pubcrawl, the fun started in the Jam, with the firstparty of the week. No one seemed to worryabout the math tests of the next day. There wasa lot of kissing, flirting, beer drinking and offcourse bar dancing! The morning after by theopening of the day everyone could see what theyhad done the night before, which lead to someinteresting reactions of you, the enthusiasticfreshmen. Tuesday had a bit slow start, becauseof the beer of the evening before. During themath self-test, we had some rest and time to pre-pare the city tour. The most exciting point of thiswas the egg-run, because none of the eggs survi-ved. The wine tasting was the most exciting partof the week, with the one-and-only Harry! Thisevening ended with a big party in the Storm.Wednesday went very smoothly, and the bow-ling was great as well. The best party of the weekwas, like every year, in the Steeg. On the last dayof the introduction week, the committee wasn'table to do anything 'till the barbeque started.With a lot of meat and beer the barbeque was agreat opening for the final party of the week. Theparty, where coaches finally were allowed to kisstheir freshmen, (and they did!) was a great

Slecht lezende mediaNadelen zijn er ook: slecht lezende

media kunnen namelijk met deresultaten aan de haal gaan.

Gelukkig zijn er ook goed lezen-de media. En moeten economenaltijd waakzaam blijven. Ommaar met de slecht lezendemedia te beginnen. Op 26oktober jl. presenteerde hetCPB de doorberekeningen vande partijprogramma's vanCDA, PvdA, VVD, SP,

GroenLinks, D66 en Christen-Unie aan politiek en publiek.

Het RTL-4 nieuws dacht een pri-meur te hebben: een van Wouter

Bos' stokpaardjes -de vergrijzing -zou beter bereden worden door CDA

en VVD. Waarom? Omdat het robuusteEMU-saldo, dat wil zeggen het begrotingsover-schot gecorrigeerd voor tijdelijke inkomsten,onder CDA en VVD twee keer zo hoog is alsonder PvdA. Aangezien overschotten wordengebruikt voor aflossing van de staatsschuld, ende daarmee wegvallende rentelasten wordenaangewend voor de hogere zorgen pensioen-kosten die de vergrijzing met zich meebrengt, isde partij met de hoogste overschotten het bestvoor de toekomst.

Of toch niet? Wat het RTL nieuws vergat, netals alle andere media die de constatering klak-

De laatste jaren is er toenemendekritiek gekomen op het planbu-reau. Veel 'voorspellingen' in dedoorberekeningen komen nietuit. Hoewel het CPB op basisvan individuele partijpro-gramma's de effecten vanbeleid op werkgelegen-heid, overheidsfinanciënen economische groei(probeert) te bepalen, is deveelgehoorde kritiek datde ontwikkelingen tijdenskabinetsperiodes wel ergsterk van de ramingen afwij-ken. Het gegeven dat inNederland zelden een partijalleen aan de macht is ten spijt;blijkbaar is de economie een welheel feilbare wetenschap.

Ondanks deze beperkingen, hebben de doorre-keningen van het CPB wel degelijk nut. Teneerste verraden ze de intentie van partijen,voorbij de retoriek. Als de VVD de belastingenwil verlagen maar ook goed op de schatkist zegtte letten, verklapt de ontwikkeling van delasten op gezinnen tegenover de verbeteringvan het EMU-saldo de werkelijke prioriteiten.Daarnaast ontnemen de doorberekeningen depolitici onheuse retorische munitie. Als de SPeen begrotingsoverschot tracht te creëren, kanhet CDA moeilijk spreken van 'potverteren'.

Joël Kroodsma - Vanaf 1986 berekent het Centraal Plan Bureau de economi-sche effecten van de verkiezingsprogramma's door.Aanvankelijk verzochtenalleen de grote middenpartijen CDA, PvdA en VVD het CPB hun financiëleparagrafen door te lichten. Sinds de Paarse kabinetten hebben de kleinerepartijen er ook aan moeten geloven. Nou ja, 'moeten' is een te sterk woord:de partijen vragen, het CPB draait, de politici zwaaien (met de rooskleurig-ste groeicijfers en begrotingsoverschotten, welteverstaan) en de pers neemthet allemaal over.

De verkiezingen door de ogen van JoëlKroodsma

keloos overnamen, was het onderhouden vaneen degelijke economieredactie. Wat de PvdAlaat afweten op begrotingsoverschotten, maaktze goed in investeringen in onderwijs en inno-vatie. De sociaal democraten willen gedurendede periode 2007-2011 twee miljard extrainvesteren in kennis (dat wil zeggen: studentenzoals jij en ik). De VVD heeft hier krap een mil-jard voor over, terwijl het CDA met iets meerdan 500 miljoen hekkensluiter is. Nu kan iede-re economiestudent - vooral diegenen die hetbachelorvak EPS hebben gevolgd - je vertellendat investeringen in menselijk kapitaal eenhoger rendement hebben dan het terugkopenvan je staatsschuld. Je schuld aan het binnen-en buitenland kan altijd afgelost worden, die50.000+ VMBO-drop outs zijn waarschijnlijkvoor altijd verloren voor de arbeidsmarkt.

BezuinigingenOm verder te gaan over die vergrijzing, begro-tingsoverschotten en rendementen (omdat jul-lie er allemaal zo van houden); waar halen dedesbetreffende partijen eigenlijk de middelenvandaan om de staatsschuld af te lossen? HetCDA kondigde aan 4 miljard te bezuinigen opde zorg. Maar de vergrijsde (dus zorgbehoeven-de), christelijke achterban was het daar nietmee eens; tijdens het laatste partijcongres werdhet een vierde van een miljard. Wat resteerdewas een ombuiging van anderhalf miljard op hetaltijd makkelijke doelwit 'bureaucratie'.

De VVD let op de kleintjes als het over de ver-grijzing gaat. De mensen met een klein inkomenwelteverstaan. De besparingen moeten totstand komen door de uitkeringen los te koppe-len van de loonontwikkeling en het afschaffenvan de bijstand voor 'jongeren' onder de 27 jaar.Maar hé, daar krijg je een drie procentbelastingverlaging voor terug. De hypotheek-renteaftrek, die per jaar 9 miljard aan belasting-teruggaaf verslindt, blijft heilig. Terwijl dezevoor een onbeheersbaar budgettair probleemgaat zorgen als de rente op de kapitaalmarktstijgt. Kortom, de VVD wil best sparen voor detoekomst, zolang het niet de eigen achterbanbetreft.

Niet dat de kleine linkse partijen het zoveelbeter doen. Onder de oppervlakte van het

begrotingsoverschot stijgen in hun programma-'s de inflatie en evenwichtswerkloosheid.Zonder een begrotingstekort kan deSocialistische Partij zijn achterban een extraat-je toestoppen. De SP beperkt de aftrek, ver-hoogt de WW-premie (een volksverzekeringnota bene) naar draagkracht en consumeert hetleger (op). De hierdoor vrijkomende begro-tingsruimte wordt aangewend voor 'gratisschoolboeken en openbaar vervoer' en hogereuitkeringen. Kortom, meer dan 120% van hetminimumloon verdienen wordt ten sterksteafgeraden. Na dit 'olie op het vuur'-beleid stij-gen de prijzen harder en zijn de uitkeringenaantrekkelijker dan daarvoor. Het CPB consta-teert een stijging van de evenwichtswerkloos-heid onder SP-beleid.

StemadviesAls ik een stemadvies mag geven, en aangezienje tot zover hebt gelezen neem ik die vrijheid,dan zeg ik: denk aan je toekomst. De vermoede-lijke lezer (jij dus) is tussen de 18 en 25 jaar.Onze ouders hebben genoten van lang studerentegen lage collegegelden, goedkope huizenprij-zen met hypotheekrenteaftrek en korte uitaardgasbaten gefinancierde werkweken. Dedemografische samenstelling van de bevolkingverandert radicaal de komende decennia. Erzullen meer ouderen verzorgd moeten worden.De gasbel onder Slochteren is vrijwel leeg in2030. Maar, de grote partijen willen vooralleuke dingen voor de veertigers van nu.

D66 durft de impopulaire, maar noodzakelijke,maatregel te nemen: verhoging van de AOW-leeftijd. Toen keizer Bismarck eind 19e eeuwhet staatspensioen vaststelde op 65-jarige leef-tijd, leefde je als simpele arbeider niet veel lan-ger. GroenLinks maakt werk van de 'vergroe-ning' van het belastingstelsel, dat wil zeggen delastendruk verschuiven van arbeid op milieu-vervuiling om zo een CO2-vrije economie tebewerkstelligen. Gezien de olieprijs van $60 enoplopende spanningen in olieproducerende lan-den is dat geen slecht idee. Kortom, vooruit-strevende ideeën die weinig 'koopkrachtverbe-tering' inhouden en daarom volledig door depers genegeerd zullen worden. Maar dat is nietde schuld van het CPB.

Een accountant is in principe controlerendmaar het is een groot verschil of je accountantbent in een groot of klein bedrijf. Je kan ookadvies geven over processen, dit gebeurt vooralbij kleinere bedrijven. Accountancy is een snelle omgeving met veelveranderingen. Deze veranderingen komenvoort uit veranderingen in regelgeving.Verantwoordelijk voor deze veranderingen inregelgeving zijn met name de AFM inNederland en de SEC in de VS. De laatste jarenis er volgens Arlette het een en ander verandert:"Tot een paar jaar geleden waren er veel minderregels voor accountants. Ook is IFRS ingesteld,waardoor veel posten in de jaarrekening nuanders gewaardeerd of omschreven worden danvoorheen. Het heeft veel extra tijd gekost om deovergang naar IFRS te verzorgen."

Werken bij Ernst & YoungMensen die denken dat werken bij een accoun-tancykantoor betekent dat je de hele dag achterje bureau zit hebben het mis. "Als eerstejaars ishet de bedoeling dat je niet op kantoor zit. Deeerste dag ga je gelijk naar de klant toe. Je hebtin dit vak heel veel informatie nodig en die krijg

Arlette Geluk is al vier jaar werkzaam bij Ernst& Young. Daarvoor heeft ze in Tilburg interna-tional business gestudeerd. Op het oog een watrare overstap, maar dat valt volgens Arlette welmee: "De overstap naar accountancy kun jemaken als je geïnteresseerd bent in economie,feeling hebt met cijfers, en je over goede per-soonlijke vaardigheden beschikt. Ik heb zelf eenpaar accountancy vakken gevolgd en via E&Yde opleiding tot register accountant gevolgd.Maar als je geïnteresseerd bent in het vak en jejezelf goed kan profileren bij een klant ben je aleen heel eind om te kunnen starten in deaccountancy praktijk."

Ernst & Young bestaat uit drie grote takken: deaccountantsmaatschap, de belastingmaatschapen de corporate finance tak. Arlette: "Ikzelfwerk bij de accountantsmaatschap, daarin doeik de controle van jaarrekeningen. Ik heb mijbinnen de accountantsmaatschap gespeciali-seerd in de controle van financiële instellingen.Accountancy is de grootste tak binnen E&Y." Indit interview zal om het overzichtelijk te hou-den de aandacht uitgaan naar accountancy.

AccountancyOver accountancy bestaan veel vooroordelen,vandaar de vraag aan Arlette wat er waar is vanhet stereotype beeld van een accountant (strakin het pak, een mannencultuur en saai). Arlette,lachend: "Over de mannencultuur: ik ben een

Er wordt van een eerstejaars wel meteeneen stukje zelfstandigheid verwacht, je krijgteen taak toebedeeld en het is de bedoeling dat jehiermee direct aan de slag gaat. Werken bij E&Y betekent een baan met piekenen dalen als het gaat om werktijden. Als bepaal-de jaarrekeningen moeten worden gecontro-leerd, ben je vaak tot 's avonds laat bezig met hetteam. "Maar", geeft Arlette aan, "je krijgt je over-uren netjes uitbetaald in geld of vakantiedagen."Het doorgroeitraject binnen Ernst & Young isduidelijk en doordacht. Arlette vertelt: "In jetweede jaar komen er in de grote teams vaakeerstejaars bij en die kan jij dan uitleggen wat jevorig jaar hebt gedaan. Jij bent dan het eersteaanspreekpunt van die eerstejaars. Na drie jaarwordt je meestal controleleider. Een controle-leider leidt een controleteam en verdeelt detaken. Na vijf jaar kan je in principe managerworden." Binnen de eerste 5 jaar van je carrièrekun je een eigen portfolio samenstellen. Ditbetekent dat je kan specialiseren in bepaaldebedrijfstakken, bepaald soort bedrijven ofbepaalde wet en regelgeving. "Maar je kunt ookje richten op de adviestak of gaan voor een car-rière in het buitenland", vult Arlette aan.

Studenten en Ernst & YoungVoor studenten die bezig gaan met hun scriptiezijn er genoeg mogelijkheden. Hierin is onder-scheidt gemaakt tussen bachelor en master stu-denten. Arlette legt uit: "Er zijn stages waar jeecht aan het werk kunt, dit wordt gebruiktdoor studenten in de BaMa-structuur die netniet klaar zijn met hun bachelor en daardooreen soort tussenjaar hebben. Bij de master-scriptie kan je ook een half jaar naar E&Y en datis meer een scriptiestage. De nadruk ligt op hetschrijven van de scriptie en onderzoek doengebruikmakend van de aanwezige kennis bijE&Y. De tijdsduur kan de student overigenszelf aangeven."

Voor studenten die zich aan het oriënteren zijn,zijn er meerdere mogelijkheden om kennis te

maken met Ernst &Young. Allereerst is ernatuurlijk de website waar vragen die je moge-lijk kan hebben beantwoord worden. Arlette:"Maar er is meer; zo zijn er inhousedagen waarhet contact een stuk persoonlijker is. Volgendjaar mei organiseren we ook nog een master-class in Istanbul waar je als student goedbekend raakt met E&Y en haar werkzaamhe-den." Voor studenten die het graag wat dichterbij huis willen houden bestaat er de mogelijk-heid voor een meeloopdag. "De naam zegt het al,je kan een dag meelopen met een accountant endoen wat hij doet, dus je gaat ook mee naar eenbedrijf. Je zit er meteen middenin." Een mee-loopdag kun je regelen door te bellen naar eenrecruiter.

I was reminded of this the other day when I metmy friend Abdul coming out of the Mosque. Hisson finished school last year, and I asked Abdulhow he was getting on. He did not immediatelyreply. But after a while he complained that hischild did not live piously by the rules of theSharia. "He may have fallen prey to the tempta-tions of sinful Modernity." I told Abdul that thiswas a worry he shared with many devoutChristian and Jewish parents. Abdul gave me asad look: "You know what my son said to me?He said it is because we let our religious leaderstell us what we should do, or not do, that mostMuslim countries are poor, while the sinful infi-dels are becoming richer and stronger witheach day." I laughed. "It is an old story. The reli-gious leaders promise wonderful things in a lifehereafter, and Modernity offers a better hereand now. Bernard de Mandeville discussed thisin the eighteenth century when devoutChristians were facing the same dilemma.Abdul never heard of Mandeville. So I quoted tohim part of the last stanza of his Fable - themoral. It was the only part I could cite frommemory.

Mandeville was a satirical writer on ethical topics. Uitsmijter

ik zie alleen nog maar de Forens, overal. DeForens kent alle trucjes. Terwijl ik wacht tot demensen uit de trein zijn gestapt, is de Forens alnaar binnen door de eersteklasdeur en looptroutineus binnendoor naar de tweedeklascou-pé. Het lijkt wel alsof de Forens net zo minwakker is als ik, maar dat hij de beschikkingheeft over een volmaakte automatische pilootom de eerste uren van de dag door te komen.Binnen in de coupé verspilt de Forens geen tijdmet uit het raam staren, natuurlijk niet. Hijneemt een late boterham en pakt alvast watwerkgerelateerde papieren uit de koffer en mar-keert hier en daar enkele zinnen zonder daarecht diep bij na te denken.

Amsterdam Zuid/WTC is mijn bestemmingvandaag, net als voor de Forens. Dit stationvormt de poort naar de enorme kantorencom-plexen die de Forens tussen 9 en 5 (8 en 6?) vanonderdak voorzien. Daarna mag hij weer terugnaar huis. Morgen weer vroeg op.

Voor de Forens allemaal de gewoonste zaak vande wereld. Voor mij als student toch een lichtbeangstigende blik in de (te) nabije toekomst.Kan het niet anders? Misschien toch nog eenjaartje heerlijk studeren...

Om 07.30 uur met de fiets naar het station. Ikbereid me voor op een eenzame tocht, maar hieren daar blijken er zowaar al meer mensen aande dag begonnen te zijn. Sterker nog... op hetfietspad waar ik terecht kom is het ronduitdruk. Wat heet druk, drukker dan ik ooitgezien heb op dit fietspad, op elk fietspad! Nufiets ik bepaald niet zacht maar de andere fiet-sers schieten mij stuk voor stuk voorbij opglimmende, nieuw uitziende fietsen met inge-wikkelde frames. Wanneer ik achterop allemaalkoffertjes en aktentassen vastgesnelbinderd zie,dringt het langzaam tot me door dat ik benbeland in de wereld van: de Forens.

De Forens heeft haast, zo merk ik al snel. DeForens moet zijn tijd zo efficiënt mogelijkbesteden en fietst daarom keihard, liefst in pak.Stoplichten bestaan niet voor de Forens.Doordat de Forens dagelijks hetzelfde doet,weet hij waar hij kostbare tijdwinst kan boe-ken. Als bus 8 net weggereden is, zo weet deForens, kan hij snel dwars over de busbaan ste-ken, nèt voordat bus 12 afslaat, om zo de routenaar het station zonder snelheidsverlies voortte zetten. Ongetrainde leken zoals ik staan dannog gapend naar het stoplicht te staren.

Nog onder de indruk van mijn waarnemingen(efficiëntie fascineert me) begeef ik me naar hetperron. Ik voel me een vreemde eend in de bijt,

Elias Hermans - Door bepaalde omstandigheden moest ik vanochtend om07.50 uur (!!!) met de trein van Utrecht naar Amsterdam Zuid/WTC. Nietmakkelijk, zo vroeg op. Onnatuurlijk zelfs. Moeizaam snooze ik door tot06.45 uur, tot dat onvermijdelijke moment waarop je er écht uit moet.Verschrikkelijk. De douche kan me nauwelijks wakker spetteren. En ook al zomoeilijk 's ochtends heel vroeg: ontbijten, eigenlijk moet er wat naar binnen.De brokken cruesli lijken groter dan ooit. De laatste hap van mijn mini-ont-bijt verdwijnt door puur doorzettingsvermogen in mijn keel.Wijd gapendtrek ik uiteindelijk dan toch de kille ochtendmist in.
