Treatment Philosophy CMC-Randolph is committed to an evidence based, systematic approach to the ECT-assisted management of mental illnesses, monitoring and recording informa- tion about results and involving patients, families/supporters and referring practitioners in the decision-making process. Patients will typically continue to see their referring providers while undergoing ECT treatments; our department functions primarily in a consultative role. Our ECT staff work collaboratively with internal and external referral sources to ensure excellent communica- tion between referring providers and our team, and to allow for a smooth transition upon discharge from the ECT service. Commitment to service excellence and quality care for our patients, their families and their referral sources is our standard – not the exception. CMC-Randolph ECT ServicesOur Electroconvulsive �erapy (ECT) Program provides state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment for individuals with severe or treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions in the safe and secure environment of CMC-Mercy. Program Features: • Initial ECT evaluation by an ECT-trained psychiatrist • Multidisciplinary team approach • Board-certi�ed psychiatrists with specialized training in ECT • Psychiatric nurses with specialized training in ECT • Anesthesiologist's evaluation of all patients and monitoring of all treatments. Other specialists consultation as needed. Services billed separately. • Inpatient and outpatient (ambulatory) treatment • Nursing assessments and interventions • Patient and family education support • Liaison with community psychiatrists and therapists • Objective depression and memory testing • ECT provided in a safe, secure and monitored environment

A team approach, consisting of psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, ECT nurses and recovery nurses is used to ensure excellent service.

ECT at Carolinas HealthCare System is o�ered in a monitored setting using the most modern ECT equipment available. It is provided by specialists who hold advanced degrees and have broad experience and training. ECT services are often covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance plans.

Advanced techniques such as stimulus titration and EEG monitoring are used to ensure the best possible outcomes while other modern techniques are used to reduce discomfort and memory loss to improve e�cacy.

Treatment OptionsPatients are referred by their current physician who contacts the ECT referral line and completes a simple one-page history form. Our multidisciplinary team will evaluate the patient to determine the recommended treatment course and any modi�cations to the treatment plan.

Physical examination, EKG, a comprehensive panel of laboratory assays and other tests are performed. Treatment recommendations are individualized to patient needs, preferences and any medical or psychiatric comorbidities.

We o�er acute (or “index”) treatment for patients who are acutely ill, as well as continuation or maintenance ECT for relapse prevention.
