Orangeville Christmas and Chili cook-offOn Dec. 4, the Orangeville

Fire Department sponsored a chili/soup cook-off in con-junction with the town’s Christmas celebration.

In the afternoon a child-rens crafts program was held where children were shown how to do a variety of crafts and games. Many children came to participate in the activities and to listen to the Christmas stories or watch a video. Others worked on crafts with the help of older children. In one corner Marty Snow was reading the night before Christmas to the chil-dren seated around her.

The Orangeville City Fire Department had an out-standing chili cook off with

more than 300 people attend-ing. The crowd was so large, that if you got up from your chair to get something, when you come back someone else would be sitting there. There were 13 large, one gallon size kettles filled with chili entered in the contest and there were 15 large, one gal-lon size kettles filled with soup entered in the contest.

Everyone agreed the soup and the chili was excellent. This was a wonderful Christ-mas event and is becom-ing an annual event. Many thanks go to the Orangeville City Fire Department for the outstanding work they did in arranging and carrying out this soup and chili supper.

The food committee under the direction of Markita Cox provided cakes, cookies and rolls for the chili/soup cook off dinner. Some of the mem-bers of the committee were Loraine Frandsen, Susan Childs, Mindy Nickleson, Beth Butler and Shanae Butler.

At the beginning of the evening as people arrived a ticket was given to everyone that came to the supper for the drawing of door prizes. The door prizes were given out after the dinner and after the prizes were given for the best soup and best chili.

Judges, for the chili soup cook off were Dusty Butler, Greg Jewkes, Tiffany Baker,

Cindy Draper and Phillip Cox. They are to be com-mended for their dedication and perseverance in judging this contest.

The chili cook off winners are as follows: first prize went to Charlotte Morris who won $100. Second prize to Seth Manning won $50 for his entry, and third prize to Barbara Lemon who won $25 dollars. The soup cook off winners are as follows: first prize went to Seth Butler who took home $100. Second prize to Mindy Nickleson $50, and third prize to Robin Healey $25.

After the dinner the chil-dren had a chance to greet Santa and sit on his lap.

Emery County DUPs celebrate ChristmasThe Emery Company of

the Daughters of Utah Pio-neers met Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Museum of the San Ra-fael for their annual Christ-mas party.

Eighty Daughters were in attendance and enjoyed a beautiful Christmas program prepared by Cynthia Grant, of the Rock Canyon Trail Camp in Orangeville and Kathy Clements, of Camp Dale in Castle Dale. Each of the six Camps participated in the program by reading the history of a favorite Christmas Carol and then singing that carol.

For example “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” was the most popular song during the World War II for obvious rea-sons, but did you know that it was originally released at the beginning of the First World War, when the Soldiers felt that they would be home for Christmas, that they would make short work of the War and be right home. When this did not happen the line; “…if only in my dreams,” was added when the song was copy written in 1943, and re-released by Bing Crosby. The program was very well received by the Daughters who are, after all, very interested in history of all kinds.

Emery Company Captain Jo Sansevero took some time

to talk about the scholarship program that the company is working towards. This would be a scholarship for non-traditional students, women or girls who can meet the requirements want to return to college or uni-versity after having their education interrupted. It is an exciting program and the Emery Company is planning to move forward vigorously with it in the New Year.

Following the program a great lunch was served that had been planned and executed by Karen Cox of Rock Canyon Trail Camp in Orangeville. Everyone took home a small gift of warm gloves and candies to help with the cold winter weather.

Estelle Tate is the oldest DUP to attend the Christmas party.

tendance at the luncheon were honored with a small gift, Le Anne Seely from Camp Dale was the youngest

daughter in attendance and Estelle Tate of Ferron’s Old Mill Camp was the oldest at 93 years.

Clawson Town Christmas partyClawson Christmas Din-

ner was held on Dec. 13. Mayor Mandi Price with the help of Trudy Waddoups and Connie Allen served a great dinner of ham and scalloped potatoes to those who came to the Christmas dinner. The residents of Clawson fur-nished pot luck salads and desserts for everyone.

Following the dinner Santa Claus appeared and, with the help of Mrs Claus, gave each of those sitting on his knee a gift. All agreed it was fun to see the joy in the faces of the children. Getting together with friends to share a meal is always enjoyable.
