ECOSMART WASTE-2014 relevance: Building a new industry together!

In October 2013 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the Concept of the National Programme for waste management in 2013-2020.

Adoption of the document aimed to reduce the amount of waste, to establish conditions for implementing the separate collection of household waste

with further recycling, as well as to approximate Ukrainian legislation to the European Union environmental standards.

During 2013 more than 500 Ukrainian cities has already introduced the separate collection

technology for household waste. Recycling pilot projects have started in 10 cities: Kiev, Kharkov

, Poltava, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad , Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky , Ternopil, Chernivtsi.

Projects include innovative technologies introduction for waste management based on the

European countries experience.

Experts predict that the implementation of waste management programs for 2013-2020 will

contribute to increase the proportion of recyclable waste in the country from 5 % to 35% , to

attract investment in waste management sphere, to provide the European system of solid waste

processing and to establish favorable conditions for waste management business development

in Ukraine.

One of the main theses of ECOSMART WASTE- 2014: any refuse is a resource, that can and should be converted into raw materials, saving

minerals and other natural resources. Experience shows that if the recycling process regulated by tax and environmental legislation, processors

receive a significant revenue. Especially impressive potential as recyclable materials have industrial waste in the enterprise.

The use of industrial waste recycled into fuel can significantly reduce consumption of major power resources - gas and coal. Thus, Ukraine has

already started projects on waste recycling into fluff, 150 tons of which replaces one ton of coal. No less perspective projects are specific waste

processing, such as used batteries, energy saving lamps, sludge, tires etc. The question today is in finding the best technologies in Ukraine and the

CIS countries, which allowed establish effective production of energy from alternative sources with minimum cost.

According to statistics every year in Ukraine accumulates from 700 million to 1 billion tons of waste, processed only 2-3%, sorted as recyclables 7-8

%, and more than 90 % dumped on landfills and waste dumps. Overall the total amount of accumulated waste in Ukraine to date, according to the

Ministry of Regional Development, Construction and Housing and Communal Services, reached 36 billion tons.

Due to the huge raw material resources and the new state course on the innovative recycling mechanisms introducing, this industry is very attractive
